I am sorry, but all these films look so much better than what we get these days:

I think a lot of it has to do with actually using physical spaces and models instead of this cgi garbage.

Someone who knows what they are talking about can explain it, but I think is it to do with colour?

Is it the type of film used? i.e 35mm or something like that?

I prefer the look of classic movies as well, with a huge soft spot for the 60's and 70's in general. With that being said, it's not fair to use The Avengers to represent how modern films look. It's always looked bland and there are still great looking movies being made.

From a purely technical stand point, Ready Player One was a feast for the eyes with how well done the CGI is.

Thor Ragnarok looked phenomenal especially when looking back on The Avengers.

Avengers Infinity War should be something else as well, as long as you can deal with Thanos not coming across super terrifying.

That's def an exception.
Its a new action movie. Its not like the films in the OP were all that common. Theyre looked back on and fondly remembered because they were great and withstood the test of time. There were plenty of less then stellar action films back in the 80s and 90s, but theyre not talked about to this day for being just that:

Classic movies remain classics, who would have thought. No reason that Bladerunner 2049 or Fury Road won't be looked back on just as fondly in a decade or two.

Yes, Joss Whedon's films look like shit. We know that.

But Dredd, The Raid 1 & 2 and Fury Road can proudly stand next to the other examples.

Edit:
I forgot John Wick.
And anything by Del Toro.

Movies like Fury Road, The Raid, Crank, Dredd or Casino Royale can easily stand with the best of the 80s.

So you pick very select films from two decades that in themselves were exceptional in their time and put them against a pretty good movie that no one ever claims was a decent action movie?

Good job?
The 80s and 90s didn't produce Predator and Terminator 2 by the millions. Those are standaouts of their genre. Most action movies back then sucked ass too.

In addition to the practical vs CGI argument, another problem with films of the last 20 years is disgusting color grading

John Wick
John Wick Chapter 2
Godzilla 2014
Kong Skull Island
Fury Road
BR2049
Batman v Superman
Rogue One
TLJ
Atomic Blonde

Alright bros what am I missing?

Kong Skull Island and BvS look like shit.

I came here to say this.

Classics are classic for a reason. For every Super Mario Bros there were dozens of E.T.

Uhhh get BvS and Kong off that list. And Godzilla barely gets to stay (same for Atomic Blonde).
I mean Kong sure (haven't seen Atomic Blonde) but the action in BvS was quite good. By far the most brutal and true to the source material live action Batman we've gotten thus far in terms of action and physicality which is a feat all on its own. The rest is hit or miss.

Especially if youre going to argue that Godzilla gets to stay
