You guys really should clarify whether you are talking about the current popularity or historical popularity. Pokémon has sold more than FIFA, GTA and COD have, but in the present it sells fewer units than those franchises
Both CoD and FIFA do 20 million on a yearly basis and that's for close to a decade. Neither Pokémon nor MK are going to touch these numbers even if you include the last 25 years.

Mario Kart not a chance. But Pokemon generally sells about 15m units per entry and with all the side entries and such it's still ahead of CoD and Fifa as far as I'm aware.

They were not better prepared, they just had more stock because France is a strong JRPG market but even with that I suspect the drop to have been quite hard. Game is out of stock at big online retailers like amazon or fnac.com and in the big majority of fnac stores in Paris.

There is still an untapped demand for the game because of the shortages, even in France.
I know that there were still shortages in week 2, even with them they had still enough to sell for the second spot in the charts. Meanwhile in other territories OT got kicked out of the Top 10 because of shortages.

Its all relative since France is a Switch stronghold - but if sold out everywhere results in a still high chart position, thats positive.

Why is Mario Kart so high? Is it because Switch hardware sales were higher (eg people buying for fornite, which doesnt show on this chart)?

Minecraft? GTA?

Pokémon is definitely up there but I dunno if I'd say the biggest franchise.

Pokémon is clearly the most valuable IP in gaming, as Gabe Newell also said earlier this year.

You have to remember that Pokémon is:
- the mainline series,
- the card game
- Pokémon Go
- Anime
- merchandise

And these are all incredibly successful, while yes Minecraft and GTA V are huge but there is not much else besides the game itself, especially GTA.

thread about to be derailed.

funnily, the original comment was about Mario kart (not mario as a whole) being #2.
and now MK isn't even involved ha

Depends on what you are measuring. Going by money earned nothing types Pokemon.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_highest-grossing_media_franchises
I mean that's what happens when star wars has took huge gaps of releasing nothing for like 25 years in total. All that really proves is Pokémon has been milked more.

Star wars Vs Pokémon at any point in time where both have been "active" and it's not even close which is the biggest franchise. Like right now, the time period that actually matters, Pokémon doesn't even come close to star wars.

And as for the "people can't accept Nintendo is top of something" comments.. I don't even like star wars at all and much prefer Pokémon

Those comments definitely are nonsense, and clear console war bs.

However, I would like to see some backing for your claim that at any point in time where both were active SW would be significantly bigger.

Of course you should include those that's point. In terms of total revenue.

Well then I would say if we solely count gaming related revenue FIFA comes on the top. Sells around 20 million every year and Ultimate Team prints money that should offset Pokemon Go revenue (We had estimate of 800 million yearly revenue for Ultimate Team and that was for 2016). With Pokemon there is too big yearly difference depending on when the mainline game releases. Last FY Nintendo shipped under 10 million Pokemon games when year before that almost 20 million. For reference GTA V shipped about 15 million last year and both COD and FIFA should be over 20 million.

Not saying pokemon isn't number one or anything but are we sure of that Wikipedia lists accuracy? Like it suggests call of duty doesn't have any/hasn't made money from merch - same goes for Harry Potter with games. Unless I'm missing something I don't think we can out too much stock in it - there are probably errors and omissions throughout.

Yeah I'm gonna need receipts on that.

My wife has several Pokemon stuffed toys and items, has bought me a whole mess of Pokemon Merch, can name all the popular characters but has zero interest in the Pokemon games. I asked if she had seen Star Wars when we first started dating, and she said " On that's the thing where the girl has buns on her ears and falls in love with Hayden Christiansen, then he's somebody's dad".

Pokemon is huge even with people that don't consume the source material, because the characters are so cute and likeable. Nobody who doesn't like Star Wars is buying a Han Solo figurine or other merch.

Seeing GoW back at no.1 is incredible (though unofficially it was no.1 last week too but kept off it due to one week only bundled software :p).

Nice to see Detroit rising again too. Both full price titles practically.

Of course slow time of year and for the next few weeks.

Didn't Pokemon and Phantom Menace both come out in the late 90s? Stars Wars hasn't been "inactive" since the prequels released.

God of War is so good people were waiting for the price to go up before they bought it.

Is there any word on the 'New Game+' mode? just got a 4K TV and want to wait for this mode before I play it again.

Price actually went up and the promotion ended and it have been rising for a few weeks now, it just speaks for the quality of the game and there being a lot of interest.

That's very impressive, and well deserved.

My GOTY so far.

Detroit is due a price cut right about now. Damn game is still ÂŁ45 everywhere!
At which price will you finally bite? :P

Wasn't GoW part of the Days of Play though? It should be full price now.
Yeah it was. But it got price cut by most retailers well before Days of Play. Even now it is cheaper than Detroit (36-38 pounds for GoW vs. 40-42 for Detroit), which saw no real sustained cuts yet. Actually pretty unusual for UK. I guess retailers are able to clear their stock fast enough to see no need

I think if Detroit sales fell off a cliff after launch, we'd have seen it cut in price by now. As it continued to sell well only up until the last couple of weeks, there's been no need to price drop. But I think that time has come for some movement to help over the slower period before it gets forgotten about in the late summer avalanche.

Actually looked into this. Doesn't exactly paint a concrete picture but pretty interesting either way

http://uk.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-best-selling-toys-of-2017-2017-10?r=US&IR=T/#1-pokemon-10

https://www.forbes.com/sites/luketh...ent-star-wars-toys-selling-as-well-this-year/

Pokémon is listed as #1 here for 2017 but star wars and star wars Lego is separate at #10 and #3 while Pokémon is all under the same branch. The second link also says star wars (presumably excluding Lego star wars again) was the #1 toy in 2016 and 2015. I don't think it's much of a stretch to assume if you were to add those two together star wars will be very close to Pokémon if not surpassing given how close they are in the first place in 2017 again. But since it doesn't give any figures it's kinda hard to tell for sure. Overall I feel like they're so close enough it may aswell be a tie with maybe a slight edge to star wars (it did surprise me Pokémon toys were so popular still though)

Movies isn't even a competition we know star wars dominates there lol

Video games seem roughly about the same per game wise but Pokémon release more games and Pokémon go is a monster. Don't think many would disagree that Pokémon is the winner when it comes to gaming.

I guess it just depends if you put more weight into movies or games as to which is the biggest franchise. Personally still siding with star wars given how easily they break a billion with movies whereas games breaking a billion is a pretty big story, and it's even harder for Pokémon since most of their games have been $40. The gap isn't as big as I originally thought though.. that's what I get for underestimating Pokémon toys :P

Switch version for Sonic Mania Plus continues to put in some serious work. Opened at #3 in the Australian charts, #4 in the New Zealand charts, and #9 in the Switzerland charts. I can't properly translate but if I'm correct, the German GFK weekly press release seems to say Mania Plus opened as the best-selling game of that week in Germany. And of course, Mania Plus only slid down a few slots from #5 to #8 in the U.K. All-Format Charts.

Pretty respectable performances all-around.

EDIT: Thought it was specifically the Switch version that opened at #3/#4 in Aus/NZ/Switzerland, but it's not really specified for those charts. My mistake.
