PS4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima retains its No.1 spot in the UK physical charts, despite a 68% drop in sales week-on-week.

[...]

The other big game of last week was Paper Mario: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch, which suffered a similar week-on-week drop of 64%. The game falls from No.2 to No.4 as a result. This second week drop means that it is now the second fast-selling Paper Mario game behind 2007's Super Paper Mario on Nintendo Wii

[...]
Replacing Paper Mario at No.2 is another Nintendo game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which climbs to No.2 despite an 8% dip in sales week-on-week.

I wouldn't be surprised if GoT had a similar success in France as it had in Japan. The two countries seem to have a somewhat similar behaviour when it comes to games.
That and France is a weeb country

Yeah agreed with that, it sold 4 million in 3 days so I think with the legs it might manage 7 million lifetime hopefully. Rooting for that 10 million though.

Not sure if serious, because this game will sell well above 10M lifetime. Unless you meant just this year? edit: just noticed you actually specified lifetime lol

It's hard to really make direct comparisons for some reasons, but part 2 is on its way then.

It's just that i didn't expect TLOU2 to be that much front-loaded.
It's six weeks old and still costs 65€ here in Germany.

I think the problem with those comparisons - aside from missing digital - are PS4 bundles. IIRC GoW was bundled heavier, hence better legs.

So GoT second-week drop is twice more than the GOW drop. Do you have Horizon and Infamous: SS numbers?

That too. Bundles kind of skew things. I wonder if ps5 bundles would happe for games that get upscale patches.

The circumstances have definitely changed between each of these releases.
I didn't quote them, but someone asked for a comparison, so I delivered.

So GoT second-week drop is twice more than the GOW drop. Do you have Horizon and Infamous: SS numbers?
Unfortunately, I only have a first week and second week for Horizon: Zero Dawn.

[PS4] Horizon: Zero Dawn {2017.03.01}
Week 1: 114.000
Week 2: 45.600 / 159.600 (-60%)

I don't have Infamous data, but I'll look into that later.
Edit: for Infamous, I have 3 weeks of sale...

[PS4] Infamous: Second Son {2014.03.21}
Week 1: 69.600
Week 2: 22.968 / 92.568 (-67%)
Week 3: 10.336 / 102.904 (-55%)

Add an increased share of digital sales, and Ghost of Tsushima is without a doubt a HUGE success for Sucker Punch, if that weren't clear already from Sony's PR statement :P

GoT however did have some localized stock issues in UK. It is currently retailing for £50 new or £55 used at CeX, so it's likely the % drop will be slightly affected.

That would be stupidly low, when the first game sold twice that.
Sold that much on two platforms and being massively bundled on PS4 throughout the years.

When it comes to being front loaded, LOU2 is certainly showing that more than some other PS4 exclusives. However, I remember for God of War that many were surprised by the UK's week 1 being low only to then be further surprised by its second week drop.

Those that wanted TLOU2 were in massive numbers, and bought in day 1. From the looks of UK, Japan, and France, sales haven't held up a month after launch. NPD could offer insight on the decline for July, but it might be possible TLOU2 is acting a bit like a JRPG? Those first three drops are pretty crazy, and surprisingly close to what Japan showed.

Unlike a JRPG though I would think sales will be more consistent and can rebound much higher in the holidays, but I think another problem is that there might not be that many PS4's being sold right now, which limits new people buying games with their console. The game is basically only selling to current PS4 owners, and the vast majority who really wanted it would have bought it within Month 1. After that, you're either going to need to discount it or bundle it to meaningfully increase sales beyond that initial interest.

Sony might have some insane sale on first party PS4 games when the PS5 launches, and they could bundle the PS5 with TLOU2 after a patch of sales start to slow next summer.

Last of Us 2 should be over 6M sold through right now. A 10M update isn't out of the realm of possibility after this holiday.

I agree with the broader points you're making; that said, like you, I am also anticipating a PS5 version of TLOU2 (probably with the multiplayer mode also included this time around), and much like the first game, I expect it to be aggressively bundled with the PS5 as well. In the long run, while I do expect a moderate drop off in total sales for TLOU2 vs the first game, I do expect them to be fairly evenly matched, with maybe a couple of million units separating their totals.

If this is true, I could very easily see a tlou2 remaster together with factions/multiplayer.

The big difference between TLOU on PS3 and TLOU2 on PS4 is that the PS4 didn't have a big first-party singleplayer/story-focused title at launch, whereas the PS5 has Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and who knows how soon after launch games like Horizon: Forbidden West will be released. While I also believe a PS5 version of TLOU2 is in the works, there's also the fact that there will be more competition in the early stages of the PS5 than past generation, and the fact that the PS4 was the market leader in North America and the UK, alongside most of mainland Europe, contrary to the underdog position of the PS3, which meant that a lot of PS4 owners didn't have a PS3, whereas most of the PS5 owners will have had a PS4.

Yea part 2 might not catch up to tlou1, but I think it will still eventually get past 20 million if there is a ps5 version.

From latest issue of Hobby Consolas:

Spain - June 2020 Top 10 (GfK)

The Last of Us: Part II sold 90.000 physical units in first week. It has smashed the previous record for a Sony published title set by Uncharted 4.

To make a comparison, the original The Last of Us released on PlayStation 3 in June 14, 2013 reached 100.000 units in 7 weeks.

Why are you guys neglecting that some bad WOM (including haters, people who didn't like the story..etc) may affect TLOU2 lifetime sales, for example instead of selling 18 M it ends upselling only 14 M.

Here's the complete slide, which also includes pre-lockdown YoY comparison percentages. COVID-19 really changed a lot for these businesses.

The presentation is 33 minutes, it's really worth a watch if you're interested in data like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJf_blqhA4I

Thanks for pointing this out, it was a great video to watch. I'm also happy you can use these slids to reverse engineer HW sales ratios between the consoles for these countries.

You can say for certain that in week 12-22 2019 the breakdown of HW units was:

Switch 55%
PS4 37%
XB1 8%

And the same time in 2020 the breakdown was:

Switch 61%
PS4 32%
XB1 6%

They also have a slide showing exactly the units sold per week (from minute 21 of the video). I counted total sales over the 11 weeks to be about 1.2M in 2020 and about 0.65M in 2019. This leads to total HW sales in weeks 12-22 2019 for each console:

Switch 360k
PS4 210k
XB1 50k

And in 2020:

Switch 730k
PS4 380k
XB1 70k

Its only an 11 week snippet but its a fascinating insight into HW sales in Western Europe in the last couple of years. The countries included in this are: UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Just as an FYI I make out total HW sales for weeks 1-11 as 830k for 2019 and 750k for 2020. Total week 1-22 HW sales for 2019 were about 1.48M, for 2020 they were about 1.95M.
