Because tons of people don't follow reserved seating when it's not a full theater. The less full it is, the larger the percentage of the audience is likely to not follow it. I guess the rationale is, who care's in a half empty theater? Can sit anywhere.
I mean, if its not a full theater, and I spot a better seat i would prefer, I'll move. But if its fullish, I wait till the movie has started, but lots of time when one goes, its quite empty. You never know the best spot until you get in there and sit down. My GF used to hate how I would want to move seats once or twice, but shes used to it now.
I don't understand, you would have picked the best spot when you reserved. Anything afterward would be seats people didn't want. It's not like layouts have changed much in the last decade since stadium seating.
You'd know, because you'd pick the seats when buying the ticket, or when making a reservation (these days online, in the past, you'd just call).
its inflexible, and its a hastle when the movie doesnt start for a while but the theatre is filling up, and you try to pick a seat but by the time you press it nothing happens because it was taken in real time. that shit is infuriating. I just want to walk in, first come first serve. What's stupid about it?
I've never had a problem with it in like two decades of regularly using it(besides one single time where American tourists sat in my seat), it allows getting the seats you want in advance... what's not to like?

if I have to plan my life around a movie fuck movies im staying home.I'll NEVER go back to waiting in line for "first come first serve". I have better things to do than wait an upwards of 2 hrs for decent seatings (bigger population, more people, people used to lining up for stuff). I LOVE that now I can eat dinner with friends and if we run a couple mins late, our seats are still there, purchased in advanced.

Right? It's why I never go to any theater, even ones without reserved seating. I mean, having to call up a friend, decide which movie to see, when to see it (they don't even let me pick the time, no, I have to choose one of their times) and then actually go to the place... That's asking a lot. I'm not gonna plan my entire life around a simple movie trip!!if I have to plan my life around a movie fuck movies im staying home.
I mean...the movie will still be playing at a predetermined time, so you kind of have to, regardless.if I have to plan my life around a movie fuck movies im staying home.
They're trying to save face for the fact that they were either too lazy to reserve good seats or too cheap to pay for the best ones. They act so surprised by somebody telling them they are in the wrong seat.
Careful with that, in many places that kind of stuff earns you a penalty fare.Pretending to do this act is how I sit in First Class on trains. Better to ask for forgiveness than permission
if I dont reserve it online, aka plan my life around the movie, Im punished by people who do?What are you talking about?
It's still "first come first serve", but it's about being the first to reserve the tickets. I can reserve as many tickets as I want for free, without any obligation to buy them, days in advance. You have to explain how that is, in any way, a hassle.
Regarding flexiblity, you can spontaneously pick the seat from the person while buying up to seconds before the movie starts, if you feel like it. But why would you want that if you can just pick the seats you want hours or days in advance?
I don't think you understand how reserved seating works.
"I want to see this movie tonight" -> "I reserve the ticket online within seconds, picking my seats. I can choose to just reserve them (and pick them up up to 30mins before the movie), or instantly buy them." -> "I go see the movie. I can arrive seconds before it starts and I have my seat, if I have paid for my tickets."
How is that "planning your life around a movie"?

If you think going online(or phoning) to reserve tickets before you head out the house is "planning your life around the movie", I legit pity you.if I dont reserve it online, aka plan my life around the movie, Im punished by people who do?
that is literally what a reservation is, a planIf you think going online(or phoning) to reserve tickets before you head out the house is "planning your life around the movie", I legit pity you.
But yeah. You're punished by the people who care enough to take less than 5 minutes to purchase their tickets early.
First come, first serve, the way you like it.
What is with people who sit in the wrong seats at a movie theater with reserved seating? Your row and seat number is right there on your ticket. They act so surprised by somebody telling them they are in the wrong seat. I see this every time I go to a theater with reserved seating, I just don't get it.
Are you really gonna act like "planning your life around the movie" is not ridiculous hyperbole? It's no more a plan than making a reservation for dinner. It's actually much less so because you have 0 social obligation to pick up the reserved tickets.
It's actually really nice. Say I want to watch Jurassic Park tomorrow, I just go to the website, and I get this:I have never been to a movie theater with numbered seats or reserved seating. First time I have ever heard of such a thing.
do you still reserve video games? Are you really gonna act like "planning your life around the movie" is not ridiculous hyperbole? It's no more a plan than making a reservation for dinner. It's actually much less so because you have 0 social obligation to pick up the reserved tickets.
And the act of reserving is something you can do while walking, while having lunch, while sitting on the toilet.
You're coming off like someone who just can't accept change, even if positive. "My car gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it."
What is this nonsense comparison?
Works the same here in Peru and I love it. If I feel like watching a movie later with a friend I just enter the app, get my tickets at the seats I want and pay with my card, that's it. Reserved seating has been a thing here for so long that I actually can't remember when we didn't have it, even back when apps weren't a thing, reserved seating was already there. Are you really gonna act like "planning your life around the movie" is not ridiculous hyperbole? The 4 dots are seats that are taken. "Bildwand" is the screen, and in red are the seats I have currently clicked.
It doesn't cost anything extra, and if you choose to just reserve(not buy) and you don't show, it's all fine, the tickets just go on sale 30min prior to the movie.
If you don't want to do the online thing, you can call the cinema, or simply show up spontaneously and take what's free.
right, the concept of going to a theatre is already nonsense, being told where I can and can't sit before I walk in just makes me question the whole thing. What is this nonsense comparison?
The video games I buy are not physical, they are not limited. Seats are. But yeah, as long as I bought physical games (up to the wii), I did reserve games, to make sure I could get them. What's your point?
When you experience it you'll come back here to start a thread on it. It's pretty good.I have never been to a movie theater with numbered seats or reserved seating. First time I have ever heard of such a thing.

paying for seats is also nonsense, of course only the diehards put up with it, which is why you cant stream it until months later. The comparison is nonsense because digital games are of infinite supply (or so close to infinite there's no practical difference), whereas good seats in a movie theatre are very much finite.
Alright, you lost me after that. But hey, no trouble, just stay out of my seat and you can question whatever you want.right, the concept of going to a theatre is already nonsense, being told where I can and can't sit before I walk in just makes me question the whole thing.
It's too late now, but I'll call up my parents tomorrow, ask if they ever had anything but reserved seating. I know it was already a thing in 1994, when I first went to see a movie, so it's probably been around a bunch longer. I really wonder why the US took so long to get a taste for that. The benefits are immense.Works the same here in Peru and I love it. you dont pay for a seat if you stream a movie off the internetEverybody who sees a movie pays for their seat assuming they don't sneak in...?

Yup. It sucks if you're buying tickets last minute for a movie that's still decently popular, but that rarely happens in my case, so I fucking love reserved seating, plus apps have made this concept 10x better.
you dont pay for a seat if you stream a movie off the internet
a prerecorded movie is not an exclusive event, or at least it shouldn't still be one if we have the internet and discs obviously.Sporting events have reserved seats.
Concerts have reserved seats.
Broadway shows have reserved seats.
Airplanes have reserved seats.
Reserved seating is not a new thing, nor is being able to plan a couple of hours ahead. It seriously takes less time to buy the tickets on your smartphone than it usually takes to stand in a traditional line at a movie theater.

most people who listen to music don't go to concerts.
