https://boingboing.net/2019/03/21/pewdiepie-fan-unleashes-ransom.html

YouTuber PewDiePie has more subscribers than anyone else on the network, and some of his rabid fans have released at least two ransomware strains that encrypt hard drives and display a notice that informs victims that a decryption key will be made available only when PewDiePie's account gets 100 million subscribers. One of the ransomware strains also warned victims that if, at any time, the Indian Bollywood channel T-Series gets more subscribers than PewDiePie, the decryption key will not be released.
Its author eventually realized the world of trouble he'd get into if any of those victims filed complaints with authorities, and released the ransomware's source code on GitHub, along with a command-line-based decryption tool.

Yeah, I'm not so sure you can just absolve yourself from legal consequences if you do that.

That's some weird stuff right there. I don't get the attraction to this dude that you need to become such a creeper over it.

This is exactly why he shouldn't have been so positive about the printer thing.

Because someone would, and now has, attempted to upstage this

They seem to have moved on from photoshopping dead victims of the NZ terrorist attack and sending them to people on twitter.

Guy's influence managed to get 50 innocent people killed. He's not going to jail over this, he's never going for jail over anything unless he's explicitly complicit.

Edit: Unless you were referring to his subhuman fanbase. Might've misread.

Why can't they spend their time doing something more productive like playing video games, reading comics, or fapping to anime girls?

It's like robbing a bank and then sending them a check the next day for what was stolen. These fucknuggets that Pewdieputz has cultivated are going to fuck with the wrong people and PDP won't be able to "oopsie" his way out of it.

Fucking white fragility at its finest.

Is Google/YouTube going to do anything or just continue to ignore this shit?

Why do cults always have the shittiest, least impressive leaders?

It sucks because the printer thing was at least under the guise of letting people know their printers were insecure. This is just evil bullshit.

Jupp. The printer thing was at least a bit positive for informing people about the insecurity of their printers.

Whoever is behind this however just saw the recognition and wanted to be praised by Pewdiepie, no matter how malicious it is.
This is just sad.

They're not fans, they're a cult and he's taking no accountability for this shit.

They are also encouraging everyone to keep making fake accounts to keep pew at the top.
But this is going beyond that now.

I mean, I'm convinced that 99% of his fans are just normal people who like watching his videos, but he should try properly to address the stuff that the last couple of idiots does to distance himself from it more clearly.

Unfortunately, he's still showing problematic stuff in his videos from time to time. While he's getting better from what I can gather, it's still a bit much even showing stuff that is clearly offensive enough that he has had to censor it.
