the man is a researcher who gets his grants by first turning his wife into a monster and as his grant renewal nears, he transmutes (combines) his daughter and dog into one creature, the experiment is irreversible and the main characters are unable to believe someone would sacrifice their own wife and daughter for money, science, whatever.
Possibly, but I've seen some shit that's not too far off this, so I'd say it's a 50/50
