Looking at the current mood about streaming and subscription models in other entertainment areas, Iam starting to think that Sony did the right thing to only dip their toes into it, while still continuing their premium product model.
It seems to be near impossible to turn a profit, and with AAA develpment costs skyrocketing. At the same time the entry burden is much higher for AAA console gaming than video streaming.
Thats why I dont see it ever being viable for video games in the AAA market until streaming is replacing home consoles.

At the same time they should be worried about their GAAS-push, since that market seems to have its own set of issues at the moment. If they can hit live service games with premium quality instead of broken launches this might still present a unique selling point.

Oooooooh. Feel like this game probably isn't gonna resonate with the mainstream but will most likely find it's own niche auedience. Can't wait though either way!

No real news for a while but if you do like your 'my corporate senpai might get angry Sony better look out' anime story lines it is THE place to be lol

Lol This deal is fucking meaningless for the intense emotion some people are investing into it. That thread is truly wild

Yea I have to imagine the promotional ad that may be at the Superbowl is for increased stock now.

Target just put out their weekly ad and it shows they'll have the PS5 GOW bundle in stock on Sunday.

They did the same thing with gaming as they did with tv/film. They didn't dive headfirst into streaming like other companies. The restraint Sony has showed in that department will pay off in the long run.

I'm just finishing my third playthrough and I still cannot believe how ahead of its time this game is. It's solid proof that tools, team size, skills, and budget are the true factors for cutting edge games now. This PS4 game (albeit with 60fps on PS5) stands toe to toe with almost any PS5 game still. Blows my mind.

With some baseline improvements from their Part I engine upgrades it would probably be one of the best looking PS5 games for a while to come.

I'm gonna have a brain blast and say that the suspicious timing of the firmware update with Discord likely dropping early March and Grubb saying a SoP is coming early March if not sooner makes me think Sony held back their live service initiative until Discord was ready to go.

It has more of an impact when as soon as it starts friends on PS5 and PC can communicate with each other while playing those games from day 1.

I'm expecting either a JP focused SOP or an SOP that has smaller budget titles. Especially if Grubb is saying it's lowkey. I'm not expecting anything big there.

Maybe the PS5 version of TLOU2 includes an expansion like Ghost of Tsushima with Iki Island.... or DLC like Death Stranding DC.

fwiw Summer Game Fest is in June 2023 and last time Neil Druckmann said they would show more factions 2 in 2023 in his show. Spidermen 2 is getting closer than ever.

Between first party and third party deals, Sony should have enough potential content for a showcase to make E3 2015 and E3 2016 combined look like crap. Guess it all depends on just how far out they're willing to announce content. For the year of the PS5 soft relaunch, I'm gonna speculate that they will go VERY hard

There was a discussion few pages back about Sony's big M&A deals and how they will most likely won't make such.

No matter what happens with ABK, i think that Sony will make another big investment aside from small studios and there are few signs about that.

1. The recent job post about M&A HR Director is very specific and most likely involves integration of large number of new employees. I don't think that SIE needs such position for small deals like Bluepoint Games or Housemarque.

2. SIE is expanding it's team of antitrust specialists;

3. Hiroki Totoki confirmed again that they are looking for IPs;

4. With the success of Uncharted and The Last of Us, it seems that gaming is the new "holy source" of IPs for film, tv and anime adaptations. Expanding gaming also means natural growth for Sony Pictures and even Sony Music.

5. Probably many people missed it, but Hiroki Totoki is getting more and more power within Sony and he is not the typical Japanese manager (conservative and more stagnant). This article from Financial Times is really interesting: Sony 'obsessed with growth' as new president appointed

A few quotes:
Totoki indicated at Thursday's earnings conference that he would maintain Yoshida's strategic direction while pursuing new drivers of growth. "I am obsessed with growth. When growth stagnates, you fall into a negative spiral," he said. "We have defined our company's purpose with Yoshida's leadership. My job is to make that a concrete project," he added.

Totoki led the $2.3bn acquisition of EMI Music Publishing in 2018 and aggressive investments in its semiconductor business.

To be honest, even if there weren't a single SoP or showcase this year I would still be very pleased with the output we already have today. PSVR2 is upon us soon, Horizon expansion in april, FFXVI in the summer, Stellar Blade and the juggernaut Spider-Man 2 in the fall. Anything extra for me is just a bonus.

I'm guessing they will announce some content up to 1.5 or 2 years out, going by announcements like Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Ronin and DS2. Some of that may be strategic to encourage new hires, but they get announced all the same. I feel 2023 and 2024 will be very dense for releases so they'll have a lot to show off

More like all the articles about a "HUGE GOD OF WAR ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE SUPERBOWL", lol.

Nah, just that there's a "low-key" state of play soon, in around a month's time because Sony is holding most of their content for a showcase before E3/June"

Oh no. I'm sure that the Super Bowl thing won't just be an ad, something the Super Bowl is just as famous for as the game itself, and will instead be a 60-second showcase of a new God of War DLC lol.

Well the showcase is in the middle of 2023. After not having one for over one and a half years. So there should be a lot they could announce for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024. One and a half years in advance is pretty short for an AAA game these days.

I mean Yoshida already said that SONY is looking for IP more than once lol and under his reign Sony did several majors acquisition (Zee, EMI, Crunchyroll, Bungie) , him and totoki aren't gonna stop there the budget for acquisition has literally doubled since the last mid term plan (it was 9 Billion iirc), the sentence "Sony will never buy a publisher" is kinda wrong since Sony already did the equivalent of it several time just not for PS, and even then they list Bungie as a publisher themselves in their official documents .

The showcase?
Did he mention SSM?

I didn't watch the podcast
Like cory doesn't like leak I supposed it's for that or maybe it's about some random people saying that there will have a dlc/big GOW news soon.

Not to mention Sony Group likely has somewhere from 7 to 10 billion left in their budget for M&A up until the end of next FY. SIE could very well get a sizeable chunk of that to play with.

If mass expansion is in the cards then I do wonder what their M&A budget for the next 3 year window afterwards will be like

If a showcase is in April/May, I'm putting my money on Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement, Pixel Opus announcement, a new Wolverine trailer, Factions gameplay, Helldivers 2, and Spider-Man 2 release date.

Anything else would be icing.

SoP in March will most likely have Horizon DLC gameplay.

Many people are missing the fact that the 3 year mid-term growth plan is entirely based on their operating profits for fiscal 2021,2022 and 2023 year. Sony Group is literally not touching their existing financial resources. And not the mention the ability to pay in other means (stocks, long term loans).

There seem to be multiple embargoes. The unboxing one lifts today (per the hype thread).
Hardware and games phased from the 15th, maybe?

There was a hint in the PS VR2 thread that said that there are two embargos, one is today (unboxing I believe that has been confirmed as) and next Thursday (16th) which is presumably for reviews.

See below.

A German VR YouTuber was asked "when does the embargo lift for announcing when the embargo lifts? /s", and the guy replied: "That's under NDA. But just don't make any plans for Friday. And if you happen to want to watch YouTube next Thursday, no one can forbid you to do so."

A SOP next Thursday feels right. I'm locking in that guess. Give PSVR2 a nice blowout before launch

Yes there are still a couple of games that look like to release soonish (<12 months) that dont have a date yet.

Evotinction
Lost soul aside
Little Devil Inside
Convallaria

Some of them are published by Sony and all are console exclusive I believe so could show up at either the SoP or Showcase

I hope Sony is going to have some good first-party announcements for the PSVR2 next week. Their launch lineup is extremely lackluster if you already have a Quest 2 and/or a PC.

Maybe the SoP will be focused on PSVR2 games as well? They need to affirm their support for it.
