Dumb down this article into easily digestible bites if old:

A survey suggests that the trust Canadians place in science may be eroding.

The survey, by the polling firm Ipsos for the multinational 3M company, also found that nearly half of those surveyed thought scientists are elitist and that a significant number of respondents discounted findings that don't accord with their personal beliefs.

"While science skeptics represent the minority of Canadians, their number is increasing," said Richard Chartrand of 3M Canada. "This trend is concerning because it shows that distrust is growing."
At a time when accelerating climate change and wildlife loss are placing science at the top of the public agenda, the survey found that 32 per cent of respondents were skeptical about it. That was up from 25 per cent the previous year.

"It moved from one person out of four to one person out of three," Chartrand said. "It's difficult for us to understand why."

The study's results were conflicting. While doubt was growing, nine out of 10 respondents said they still trusted research results.
Nearly half -- 44 per cent -- said they considered scientists "elitists." About one-third felt scientists were influenced by government agendas. Another third thought science has been swayed by corporate agendas.

And 30 per cent said they only believed science that aligned with their personal beliefs.

Other findings have echoed the 3M-Ipsos survey.

A 2017 Leger poll for the Ontario Science Centre found 29 per cent of respondents thought that because scientific theories are subject to challenge, they can't be trusted. Another question suggested 43 per cent considered science to be a matter of opinion.
"It's depressing but not too surprising," said John Smol, an ecologist at Queen's University who has written about the issue. "There's a real disconnect between what scientists do and what is the perception in the public."

Smol fears Canadians don't understand how science works -- that data, not belief, is what counts and that science advances when old beliefs are upended, not shored up by unspoken consensus.

"There are certainly misconceptions," he said. "You can't blame them. It's a jungle of misinformation out there."
It's not all the public's fault, said Stephen Johnstone, chairman of earth and atmospheric sciences at the University of Alberta.

"We have to make an effort to communicate in terms that are understandable," he said.

"There used to be an ethic in science that the lower the number of people who actually understood what you did, the better you are doing. That is turning around."

We are steadily degrading to the point where anything requiring some kind of education to understand is increasingly perceived as elitist.....but then again in a world where people routinely vote against their own self interests and anti-vexxers exist, this shouldn't be a surprise.

Your politicians wear blackface and your people dont like science? Canadians really are just like us. It's strangely comforting to know we're not the only morons on this continent.

Sadly, most of the continent is like that, with the exception of some indigenous groups that have their own worldview.

It's incredible how these dullards can just discount the efficacy of science. Do they think their car, microwave, computer, etc were designed with wishes and lucky guesses?

I mean they are elite in their fields. But that doesn't mean they are elitist.

This is pretty disconcerting honestly. The spread of anti-intellectualism by morons who think they know more than they do (a la the dunning Kruger effect) is extremely frustrating.

And the name of those Canadians? The Cons and the CPC.

Next time you hear someone say something this stupid, you're allowed to spit right in their eye. It's the law.

American influence rubbing off in a bad way. Canada was one of the few bright spots in the horrific right of the alt right worldwide. If you fall too, I guess everyone sane is just going to have to move to New Zealand.

The problem is they're right. Scientists are elitists. That's the point. It's an inherently meritocratic system.

The problem is not that scientists are elitist, it's that elitist became a dirty word on the left and the right.

I think it's time to rehaul all education systems. Add in more critical thinking classes. And have everyone do Continuing Education every few years. Cause if they don't use it, it looks like they are losing it. Their brains that is.
Plus we need to somehow make science interesting to people. Like air Bill Nye non stop.

Scientists are elitist but let's vote for fuckers like Trump and BoJo. Well they did it. They dumbed us down. Our education systems in the west were probably never that good and in recent times it's about passing tests with little to no critical thinking skills developed whatsoever.. so they've done it. They've won! Woooo. Bring on Waterworld Mad Max land!

If a serious subject is being discussed and doesn't include the word 'shit', 'fuck', or something else to make them cool and relatable why think scientists are being real?

It's like the whole world is slipping away into a black hole of ignorance, fear, and hate. I think we can only really change this fundamentally through better and continuous education, people clearly need to be taught and re-taught how to think critically.

Edit:

This essentially.

Anti-intellectualism is a plague. It's definetly also a contributor to why Trump won. You can see it in the rise of all these nutty conspiracy theories like anti-vax and flat earthers, too. Sole reason for these things getting traction is more and more people thinking they are as smart as people who studied a field for ages.

Most people don't get their education from books or lectures but from social media. It will only get worse.

The problem with science is that everything changes all the time. How are you supposed to know what's true one day and not true the next?

As a scientist/professor myself this is really depressing.

There is a huge pressure on us to communicate better, but this is no easy task. I mean, to stablish the channels at least is really hard.

they were designed and produced by the holy free market facilitated by capitalism whose tenets were written by God Himself.

What the education system like in Canada? Do they have affordable or free access to education?

I start to wonder if anti education attitudes are a result or regular ass people not being able to afford it without going into massive debt, effectively making education another way for the rich to keep poor people down, leads to this hate of being educated.

College needs to become the next step in the public education system with the goal of giving everyone a shot or we need to make life feasible and livable regardless of your education level.

The more science talks about people having to make changes to excess consumer lifestyles the less people want to believe.
Scientists have got to be wrong. Damn elitists.
Being lavish, self absorbed and stupid is a culturally fostered sign of success.

It's the result of dumb shit by people who aren't experts, but just have large followings, because way more accessible and visible on the internet

Its much much easier to spread bullshit than it is to spread facts. We can thank social media for that.

K-12 is free.

University tuition are subsidized by the provincial government. From 2000-2004 my tuition for a science degree was on average 5k per year.

Social media, baby.

Where Karen from down the block who's biggest worry in life is making sure her kids are dropped off at daycare so she can work on her collection of "healing crystals", has a wider audience that'll hold onto her every word because of how "relatable" and "knowledgeable" she is than any audience that a scientist will ever have.

The truth is probably between these two things. Conservatives looove to mess with the education system and social media has been an absolute shit show.

My reference to conservative parties lies with their position on specific envionrmental positions. It's no secret that their climate denial has done a lot of heavy lifting in terms of the public's skepticism on sciences. The media also has a share in this. Talking science with conservative minded people is a heart attack inducing activity. Even it has nothing to do with climate science.

People think they're smart just because they are "skeptical."
