Charli XCX mixtape is a disappointment for me. Not even close to being as good as Number 1 Angel. Femmebot just makes me mad I'm not listening to Robyn.
Charli's Femmebot is so much better than Robyn's.
Charli and A.G. Cook made an amazing piece of work with the new mixtape. It's scatterbrained, energetic and frantic, which is very much apart of Charli's work ethic now, yet still retains that glossy and pristine finish that PC music is known for. It almost feels like a bit of a battle between these two contrasts, but works so well within the construct. Charli also giving promo to a lot of lesser known artists and serving some of the best current LGBT artists on her features should be commended.
She's never going to go back to her True Romance past. If anything, True Romance was a bit of a mess and overproduced, where her PC music era takes some of the ideas from TR but fleshes them out with some of the best and most innovative producers in the PC music scene.
And I'm not sure if y'all heard XCX3, but it was a TRUMPH. One of the best albums I've heard all year but it sounds like a step back from Pop2. The songs are clean and very poppy, with a mix of A.G. Cook, SOPHIE, Blood Pop and Stargate producing, but ultimately feels like it was a product of N1A and not a lot of connection to Pop2. Who knows if those songs will ever be released, tbh.
Pop2 is the ultimate Charli album, for better or worse. She will most likely go the Robyn route and do segmented mini-albums and not put out true, classic releases. Her label seems more on board with the idea of her mixtape releases now compared to when N1A dropped. Charli is putting in work and making these releases acceptable for pop artists.
Props to Charli XCX, for serving us an XCXmas gift with Pop2, she is the true QUEEN of experimental and forward thinking pop.
