User Banned (1 Month): Dismissing Concerns of Antisemitism
House Speaker Mike Johnson, the man without a spine, plans on making a speech about the "horrors of antisemitism" at Columbia University later today. I hope he gets an update about the student who "lost her eye" because it turns out she didn't and doesn't include this false story in his speech. Then again, the goalposts move with ease where nobody is held accountable to lying about UNWRA or mirowaved babies or no hospitals or universities were bombed or there are no mass graves.

Big Picture reminder: mass graves were recently uncovered in Gaza as recently as this week. People with their hands tied behind their back and murdered, including medical staff. These were uncovered near the grounds of hospitals. But the story in America is this """""rampant""""" antisemitism and takeover on college campuses. Of course, the "free speech on campus" political class are putting all of their attention here and not on the real problematic story, and when the damage is done here they'll find another lie to pony up for half a month as the cycle continues on.

A New Perspective on 1968

Columbia.edu said:
Columbia is a far different place today than it was in the spring of 1968 when protesters took over University buildings amid discontent about the Vietnam War, racism and the University's proposed expansion into Morningside Park. After a weeklong standoff, New York City Police stormed the campus and arrested more than 700 people. The fallout dogged Columbia for years.

It took decades for the University to recover from those turbulent times. Columbia now has one of the most socio-economically diverse student bodies among its peer institutions. It has added a new campus designed to be open to the community and pursues fields of inquiry unheard of a half-century ago. Columbia is commemorating the 50th anniversary of those long-ago events with a deep dive of scholarship and exhibits chronicling what happened then and its effects today.

Arrests continued Tuesday at colleges across the country after students refused to end their protests against the Israel-Gaza war, part of a surge of demonstrations and encampments that have exacerbated already tense emotions on campuses.
At Columbia, where the latest wave of campus unrest began, the university sent an email to staff and students requiring many classes at its Morningside main campus to be hybrid where possible for the rest of the semester. "Safety is our highest priority as we strive to support our students' learning and all the required academic operations," the university added in the email seen by The Washington Post.
In a statement late Tuesday, Columbia President Minouche Shafik set a midnight deadline for talks on dismantling the encampment on the university campus. If the discussions are not successful, the university "will have to consider alternative options for clearing the West Lawn and restoring calm to campus," Shafik said.

A Columbia spokesperson declined to comment on whether the university would take immediate action to disperse protesters if the deadline passed without an agreement.
In New York, police cleared the protest encampment centered at NYU's Gould Plaza on Monday night at the request of the university, according to the NYPD and an NYU spokesperson. Faculty members and students were arrested, NYU Faculty for Justice in Palestine announced. The department told The Post it did not know how many of those arrested were students or faculty.
Police Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry told Fox 5 New York that about 10 to 15 faculty members had "their hands tied together in a chain" and that they were "most aggressive" toward police officers. "They would not move, they would not let go," he said, adding that staff were "physical" toward police.
Daughtry said that police were asked to come in by school leadership, who requested assistance, and that protesters were asked to leave the area before officers took action.
Tarik Sheppard, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of public information, told Fox that officials were using lessons learned from Columbia to tackle the situation at NYU and to help form a plan to keep Gould Plaza clear of protesters. Footage aired Tuesday on Fox showed a panel being set up to block off the plaza.

Videos on social media showed dozens of officers in tense confrontations with protesters. Some officers tossed tents, and others grappled with demonstrators. Videos also showed police loading people, whose hands were zip-tied behind their backs, onto police buses.

NYU spokesman John Beckman said the university blocked access to the plaza where about 50 protesters were demonstrating "without authorization" Monday morning.

The barriers were breached early that afternoon by additional protesters, "many of whom we believe were not affiliated with NYU," he said. They exhibited "disorderly, disruptive and antagonizing behavior" and refused to leave when told the protests would be disbanded. The university then requested assistance from the NYPD, Beckman said, adding that "several antisemitic incidents" were reported.

The President is really in cahoots with these people—the House GOP crazies.

Guess that donor money is too good.

Amazing. Is this the same school where that one Zionist stood in the middle of a peaceful protest and no one paid attention to her at all? Despite that, her husband posted it on social media and made them out to be victims.

Yep, same one. What was funny is that behind her were Jewish individuals supporting the protest. That clip broke multiple narratives yet still the folks who filmed it tried to make it sound like they went to the heart of the beast and came out wounded and scarred.

Expecting the board and President to stand on principle over big donors isn't realistic.

The irony is astounding. It was already a huge mistake for them to send the cops in once. It boggles the mind that they're thinking of doing so again, as if it'll calm things down. The damage to their reputation will be immense and the protests will only grow.

I hope the protests remain peaceful and inclusive and become yet another inescapable sign of popular discontent over what's happening in Gaza.

Make no mistake. They aren't actually scared of the professors. They are setting up excuses for using more force.
right, the whole thing is so ridiculous, like every compsci course I took at NYU was taught by some old Jewish guy and they are really trying to play the violent antisemitism card, Stern school of Business, Tisch school of Arts, Silver school of Social Work, etc.

I live in a giant bucket.
A Columbian professor (John McWhorter, a known critic of so-called "wokeness") wrote this NYT Opinion article and it's, uh, a trip.

In a general situation where any kind of humor, dark or otherwise, intentional or otherwise, is in fatally short supply, thanks be to John McWhorter (of course) to argue that the protests are too much because they're interrupting John Cage's 4'33".

Satire is truly dead.

Columbia extends deadline to clear pro-Palestinian protesters to Friday as talks continue

Students initially said the university was negotiating in bad faith, but tensions may have cooled since then.
Columbia University said on Wednesday morning that it was making "important progress" in negotiations with student protesters, hours after the administration extended a new deadline to clear them out.

An email from a university spokesperson said students had agreed to four stipulations: They would remove a number of the tents on the school's west lawn, they would ensure no outsiders would join the demonstration, they would comply with FDNY guidelines in the encampment area, and they would prohibit discriminatory or harassing language.

The email said the university would continue its dialogue with students for the next 48 hours, effectively extending the deadline until Friday.

These people live in some insane bubble, what the fuck is this

And is this guy comparing the kuffiyeh as "clothing portraying Hamas as heroes"?

Yeah that video of the "stabbing" is on /r/Connecticut and it was hilarious. So many people pushed this story. Its playing out exactly like the beginning of this war. So much bullshit being pushed as fact by "neutral" journalists only for them to delete tweets or move on to the next story after they're caught.

The same week we got independent confirmation that US and Israel lied about UNRWA and discovered over 300 bodies in a mass grave outside of a besieged hospital, this country votes to give the perps billions more to continue their killings while making it seem like khamas has taken over college campuses.

I've posted about this on the main Israel/Palestine thread, but I have been at the encampment for the past few days, am involved in its organization, and I am happy to answer any questions regarding it.
My impression is that as Columbia attempts to repress it more people on campus have only become more activated and a wider awareness that something wrong is happening is spreading throughout the students. Would you say that's accurate?

So, I'll ask the most pressing question:

Speaking as an active protestor, what's the actual mood/situation there? We know the Columbia administration, the GOP, ADL and the media present a hyper-focused lens on the anti-semitic opportunists, but how inaccurate of a picture are they painting?

(On that note, I highly recommend this Slate interview with the Columbia newspaper's editors.)

This was absolutely hilarious.

Also super fucked up from her husbands POV. If you genuinely believe that these protestors are anti semitic and capable of violence, your first thought is to send your wife in there to get punched in the face?

The reality distortion is so strong that reason cannot hope to penetrate it. Both the husband and the wife went to upload that video while thinking she was truly being a victim in that moment.

They truly believed that the world would see the surrounding protest as inherently hateful and dangerous in that video where all we see are music playing and dancing and objectively peaceful vibes. It's a scary amount of cognitive dissonance to upload that seeing something so completely different than the reality.

This happened at Cal Poly Humbolt, didn't want to make another thread so will include it here. Not sure what the cops were thinking, attempting to push the protesters into a small area like that. Luckily the protesters were able to push back and there were no serious injuries.

The third- or fourth-most hilarious part of this is that there's not some "correct" type or level of ambient noise required for 4'33". It's literally just whatever sounds are around you at the time of the performance. It's one of the main ideas of the piece. How do you miss the point that badly?

This protest will spread.

I hope so. Colleges regularly have white nationalists speak but can't allow a pro-Palestinian valedictorian to speak. Calling for Palestinian emancipation is probably the most risky thing to advocate for right now because it intrinsically requires reflection on how Israel has been allowed to operate for decades towards Palestinians and that shit is a can of worms no one in the U.S. gov't or ruling class wants to come to terms with because the U.S. sends them so much weaponry and money.

this "professor" is displaying the same level of awareness of the avant garde as most others of his ilk would unironically play fortunate son without a shred of idea that it is, in fact, a protest against the very thing they're celebrating it with. purely selective application, uncritical in the slightest

I don't think even he's dumb enough to miss that point. He just wanted to cry about the protests in general and chose the worst possible example to claim that it was interrupting his class.

I wouldn't put professor in scare quotes. John McWhorter is a very well-credentialed and generally highly-regarded Uncle Tom, reliably carrying water for the racist right for decades along with his mentor Thomas Sowell and his substantially dumber protege Coleman Hughes.

Oh they're still making noise and talking about it but about how these protests need to be crushed by the police and the students need to be exiled from society.

America has to protect America Jr (Israel) at all costs. If you look at what Israel is doing in Gaza similar to America's "War on Terror" from the 2000s it's the same shit: deny the atrocities of civilian death and weaponize those who object as nothing but hateful. In this context you can't call them anti-American, but antisemitic instead. And just like the bullshit of the 2000s it has blind bipartisan support by the least among us in positions of power.

I find it in incredibly ridiculous that right-wing media is only calling out the pro-Palestine side, because of this continued inane argument that supporting Palestine = anti-Semitism.

Like, both sides are peaceful and have the right to protest. This is clearly, blatantly because you only agree with one of them.

You see it on the lower third of Fox. "Anti Israel protest". The propaganda is thick.

Also UT Austin protest we're giving Kent State vibes.
