All those cool smaller niche sites I used to go to for all my hobbies, whether it was gaming or music or fucking linguistics, have all been deserted, replaced by the Reddit behemoth and its total lack of any community, its emphasis on arranging threads and posts by votes rather than time, and its nonsensical wannabe-Silicon Valley laissez-faire approach to the massive amounts of hate for which it serves as a platform..

This is completely anecdotal but the subreddit for any given interest of mine always seems to be a hub for scrub-ass Captain Obvious's. "Oh you like rap? Check out N.W.A.". I really see this shit. Fuck off with it.

There's no going back either. The internet will only funnel more and more content into these super-sites and we're all powerless to stop it.

Hmm I see what you're getting at, but if the interim refugee situation from G*f taught me anything, it's that there are still plenty of smaller communities hidden away out there if you know how to look for them.

What happened to nosleep? Besides the fact that it got overproduced to shit.

"Don't step into the woods at night Part 32"

"You'll never believe what I found in a VHS tape"

"I work at _________ and I have some stories to tell"

The front page is pretty always some recycling of these. It started off as an amazing subreddit, and there's still the occasional gem, but it's pretty much click bait city now.

I just realized you're talking about the forum and I'm talking about the podcast. My bad.

That's right!

https://shmups.system11.org

See this place for example. it's like the BEST retro gaming video setup forum, and it's small, and friendly.

There are also sub-communities on many popular imageboards, such as /sthg/, a Sonic imageboard community. Heck, /sthg/ is so active, it even has its own mascots: Bump the Deer & Sage The Sloth.

And what about all those IRCs channels devoted just to 90s TV ads?

Just gotta keep digging to find the gold!

Yea I understand. I don't like Reddit. I do visit a few pages or communities there for the same reason, other sites or whatever are gone in favour of the subreddit. The organization and design of that website is atrocious. The lack of real moderation too is annoying.

Go to 4chan or some other Japanese imageboard if you want to be an elitist geek. If you want a nice community, you'll have to make compromises for people who aren't as hardcore as you.

I have some serious reservations about Reddit:

  1. Accounts don't have to be tied to an email, making trolling/astroturfing easy.
  2. Some communities are too large, each with their own rules and sometimes trigger happy mods.
  3. No avatars. There's really no way of recognizing other users besides ones that have special tags.
  4. The "best" comments float to the top via upvotes, leading to people just trying to one-up each other.
  5. Long form content is discouraged by the earliest comments moving to the top.
Don't get me wrong, it's a decent aggregator, but the community is less than ideal in anything but the smallest of subreddits. And don't you dare try to self-promote on reddit. Most communities loath advertising, and will downvote if it even seems like you are linking to your own content no matter how relevant it is.

Does that make ResetERA the Target of the internet

Absolutely, but only if you don't pronounce the "t" at the end of "Reset."

On a more serious note, I agree, that place has always rubbed me the wrong way. It's like a fast-food version of forums. Everyone has the exact same experience, there's very little thought behind it, and it's causing serious damage to our society.

I see where you're coming from, but I love Reddit for serving as a centralized hub for my interests.

There are a lot of very friendly and helpful people in r/Violinist and r/ClassicalMusic, for example. I rented out my pawn on r/DragonsDogma and got millions of RC. I got some much needed advice for my JMT thru-hike on r/CampingandHiking. I restored my faith in the internet on r/WholesomeMemes. Reddit has a lot of terrible bullshit on it, but it also hosts a lot of great communities too.

This. The subreddit used to be great and full of believable creepy stories like The Smiling Man. Then it turned into such hyper-condensed garbage that it's embarrassing.

"Help! I think my mom is trying to kill me..."

Not hating on reddit, but I am proud to report I am not a member of it... Or facebook.

Or make a community thread here, or join one. We have a large diverse community here with incredibly smart, knowledgeable people on a variety of subjects (this reminds me, I need to go get in the D&D community thread here if we have one, I have a few editions worth of info to catch up on).

My problems with Reddit:

> The hordes of trolls that range from sub to sub, leaving racism and bigotry in their wake. At least you can downvote them, but that also leads me to
> Comment brigading. Especially that engaged by white supremacist subs like t_d. There were times when the front page of reddit was entirely Trump submissions, but at that seems to have been reigned in.
> Seeing that interesting picture or gif, and going into the comments for insight. 99% of them are the same tired jokes fishing for upvotes, if you're lucky you might get some actual knowledge all the way at the bottom lf the comment chain.
> The comment structure just doesn't lend itself to discussion as well as forums do. Too often threads get twisted into convaluted chains lacking in any coherency.

Reddit still has its good parts of course, mainly in the smaller subs, but I hope that ResetEra sticks around for the forseeable future. There's just no better community out there, imo.

Walmart doesn't cater to my very specific fetishes though.

Reddit is more like Amazon.

It's good for funny articles.

And it does a good job of putting offbeat stories together. I usually do manual searching, but reddit helps find articles faster.

That really only goes so far. Monopolies are still monopolies even if their consumer base is only a fraction of the population. And we're seeing the increased monopolization of the internet. Any one individual saying "I'm not going to participate in Facebook or Reddit or Youtube" is weak.

I dig Reddit cuz it's like being at a party 24/7. For mature and level-headed conversation, forum like ResetEra is better. The topics available to discuss on Reddit are massive and diverse but sometimes it feels like people are more interested in getting karma points.

4chan is actually pretty good if you want to discuss a bevy of topics.

When the /co/ board was created, it made 4chan worth going to besides the porn.

They re-sparked my interest in comics in ways GAF and other forums/chatrooms didn't. With the creation of other boards, there was quite a lot of comfy communities being made on 4chan. That kinda died away sometime in 2011-2014 with the increase of smartphone users, but a lot of boards are still worth going to just to discuss things.
All types of people go there and it's what keeps that place so active, and able to discuss just about anything.

I love reddit. Subreddits allows me to see news for specific games I'm subscribed to so I don't have to dig through pages of an OT to see what conversation I can fit myself in. It gives me a different experience when I'm not here.

I think the implied is that we don't actually go there because we're better than it.

Reddit is great. Incredibly useful.

I think on the old website, there was some unfounded sense of superiority since it was more exclusive than Reddit.

Facebook is more my digital Walmart. You only go there when you have to, and everyone looks trashy and you hate them/they hate you.

ERA is In-N-Out.

1. Much smaller footprint
2. Higher quality
3. People who can't have it pretend it's not good

Nah.

Stormfront did too much of a number on 4chan. Literally every thread past a certain length has someone posting alt-right meme garbage and you can generally assume everyone you talk to on there is a full-on Trumpkin until otherwise stated, at which point they'll just get piled on.

The people on /sci/ generally don't believe in man-made climate change ffs.

There's a >99% chance a new forum won't take off because communities are centralized on Reddit. And yes, ResetEra is part of the <1%. Imageboards are mostly even worse and IRCs/Discords lack proper longform writing because of how fast everything moves.

I can't go on reddit for more than 10 mins before I get annoyed with the UI and page layout. The only forums I used outside of here are the Misc & Sherdog.
