I don't want to sound happy this thing is stumbling out of the gate because I want this space to succeed, but gosh I'm not going to pretend like I didn't say this looked like a miss last summer while a bunch of people insisted that Apple don't ever miss.

I always thought this seemed more like a POC that needed a few more iterations before it really became enticing to much of any consumers - but I would have assumed Apple understood that too?

Its cool tech and has promise, but it needs to get cheaper to produce and slightly better in ways that I am not sure are even solvable now before its anything more than a rich mans toy

Doesn't surprise me at all. I honestly think the hardware is incredible and it's super cool to see a company try to create a new computing experience but a few things are holding it back - the price, the comfortability/wearability and lack of killer app(s)/feature(s).

There's no narrative to derive from this. This product was never meant to sell any kind of meaningful volume to begin with.

I think for the cost it is just not there yet. With the v1 it feels similar to Apple Watch v1 where the hardware just didn't have enough power. Granted Apple Watch was approachable from a price perspective aside from the gold version. 3500 is just way too much.

its that spending a bunch of money on something incentivizes wanting to use it to 'get your moneys worth'
there's a pretty generous return policy. no need to talk yourself past buyers' remorse when you have half a month to try it out.

the people who kept it… kept it because they think it's legitimately great?

ahh so THATS how your suppose to use a wireless mobile device

They might advertise it as being very mobile but the truth is, it's not. You're connected to a giant battery pack the entire time and most of its current use cases are primarily for sitting down. If you're going to sit down on the couch and use it with it already tethered to a battery pack, there's not really any extra loss of mobility by connecting a USB cable from an AC adapter to the battery.

im sure all 5 are happy

People who have the disposable income for impulse buying things like the Apple Vision Pro do not care about getting your money's worth. You only have so much time, you use it when you want to use it. It's a great device. I don't even think about it for a second that I haven't used it in two weeks. It's there when I want it.

Unsurprising, from announcement it was very clear they didn't really have a good use case for it, a reason someone should own it. It doesn't solve any problems that people have and is too expensive to pick up as a novelty.

It'll be interesting to see how many more swings at it they take.

Make it 499 and we shall think about it.
Make it 399 and you got a deal.
Make it 299 and... Uh... I'll buy two

The thing is it will never be that. It's essentially a full MacBook Air on your head with more stuff. I can't see it ever dropping under the MacBook Air price.
However if they eventually dumb it down to just be an external display you plug into your iPhone, Mac, and so on... then perhaps. In some ways it be a better device if it did exactly that. But I assume thats what the air (non pro) version will be.

It really isn't a mobile device. People think you're supposed to walk with this thing on and stuff like that... no. You use it the same as you would an iPad or MacBook. With few exceptions, it's designed to be used as a stationary device when interacting with it.

The battery life should be better. And I think it's ridiculous how expensive extra batteries are... and there's no hot swapping.

But for watching a movie, you're stationary. Just plug it in. Pretty much every SW and Delta flight now has 65W USBC charging - on a plane, I literally deplete 0% of my battery in the air.

I'm so tired of products nobody needs, pricetag aside. Technology has a real issue with peddling unnecessary devices on people, and exclaiming they're essential

Also choosing the most uncool pic ever for the article is a top notch choice.

I don't understand how they thought there was a consumer market for it when it costs $3500.

I feel like VR is one of those things that tech companies have decided "is the future" despite there being little-to-no real world interest in it.

I am still surprised that Apple decided to release a headset that was substantially heavier than the Quest 3 and required an external tethered battery pack on top of that.

Even if you ignore the price difference, it is a pretty clunky design, which is not what you expect out of Apple.

As someone who enjoys VR, I can say that the problem with VR is comfort and convenience. They are just not there with any headset today. Apple own device is actually terrible compared to competition in regards to this.

It was worth it for the memes and the real life dystopia of people wearing these in public. I assume people stopped using it cuz they rubbed the skin completely off their genitals after a week of vr porn

Apparently the battery is the way it is because it's pulling more power than typical devices or something. I believe snazzy labs goes over it in a video. It's why even external battery packs can charge it but not at a rate to keep it at 100% even though it can seriously prolong the life to something like 5 hours for me.

VR isn't going to take off with the masses until the technology is miniaturized to literally the size of sunglasses. Needs to be as easy to use as putting on a pair of glasses, and would need to be stylish too. Otherwise it will always be a niche enthusiast thing. So maybe 10 years from now.

I love VR and believe in its future, but VR/AR with the size or formfactor of regular glasses is far more than 10 years away. There are some fairly intractable laws of physics to contend with or circumvent first.

It can offer some absolutely incredible experiences in the interim though, and I predict that it'll become fairly mainstream before then.

Oof that Zuckerberg actually had the best take on the AVP. Something along the lines of "we're not aspiring to get to where the AVP is, if Oculus is ever that big, clumsy, wired, and expensive we'll have completely failed."

Yamauchi-esque.

It doesn't help that wearing one makes you look like a huge dork-ass loser.

Ironically the one thing Apple has been lacking in the last 5+ years is vision.
