One addition, Samsung phones in Korea are much more expensive than in other parts of the world.
The S9 sold at first for ~1mil won, so ~$1000, compared to $720 in the US.

So yeah, it will be very expensive, more than the X, but not $1800.

I don't understand the utility of a foldable smartphone. At all.

Its cool tech, but seems completely unmecessary

I think they can ask $1500 easily for it. It's going to be the first revolution in smartphone design since eight years or so. I know I want one (if it looks like the mockups and doesn't break after 10.000 folds).

The idea is to carry something small that gives you a much bigger screen. A device with 4.5" footprint but you really get 7"+ screen. A phablet without a busted pocket. If you can't see a utility in that, then I can't help you.

Do I see a headphone jack in that mockup? Haha.
It'll be interesting to see what these finally look like, feels like bendy screens have been around in labs for most of this century.

A small screen barely sufficient for watching short youtube videos, to an iPad mini where I can watch movies on the go?
Nah, who needs it.

what?
But there are already phones with plenty of real estate for watching movies on the go, with reasonable price tags. And people stopped buying tablets years ago because their phones did everything they needed.

Just seems like a very niche product to me, I'm surprised they're using the Galaxy X moniker on it

It's a niche market. It's for people that want the latest galaxy phone that can also expand into a tablet. Whatever the S10 is, it will have an SoC faster than all Android tablets.

If this actually works and comes to market, it will expand the "things with display" market to new levels of sci-fi. Wallet? Screen. Clothes? Screen. Bracelets? Sure. Book envelopes? Why not. This is a cool concept mockup.

What is wrong with the phones that we have right now? Who needs that?

..is also what people said when LCD TVs started. And OLED. And dual screens. And probably color screens.
There's a lot of shit to be built onto this, the big foldable screen in a small portable device is just one of it, and even that one might be huge.

You don't see the advantage of having a big screen with you when you need it? If the tech is great it would be awesome.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being skeptical of the described utility of a consumer electronics device when so many ideas come out that are going to change the world and then just end up fizzling out.

Well I can only speak for myself, but big phones? Too big. Phone Viagra when I need it? Sounds good to me!
People stopped buying tablets? OK? I heard the explosive growth of that market stagnated, but hey, I don't know.

The first gen of this is going to be awful, and not sell at all. But the third or fourth is going to be astonishing.

Notches, foldable screens, curved corners, "edge" displays. I like that the mobile phones are slowly getting unique looks nowadays :) variety is nice.

When phone designers are adding notches to improve their screen-to-body ratio by .1% or whatever, a folding smartphone is an inevitability.

I am holding on to my S7 edge until this is a reality. Phones really haven't evolved in a long time.

if they can pull it off it would be the greatest advance in electronics/tech since the introduction of the iPhone IMO. How on earth people not realizing the utility? Carry a small phone sized device in your pocket that expands to iPad size (this level would probably be decade or two away from the first iteration I would think).

What kind of big screen are we talking about.

Do you prefer a regular 5-6 inch phone in your pocket, or a folded one, which is half as long but then obviously twice as thick in your pockets?

This fixes one problem but introduces another unless it's paper thin when "unfolded" but then where does the battery go?

I'll get one whenever it's available, usually tend to stick with older model phones for years but this I'd splurge for. It's just neat.

One big question I have is how they will protect the folding screen from scratches. Gorilla glass don't bend so good

I'd almost rather have a startac sized phone that folds out into an S9 sized phone

It's crazy, I know, but I have never used a glass protector in my life and I didn't get any scratches. I even carry it in my pocket without protection sometimes. 20 years of mobile phones, 6 years of smartphones, never an issue.

Pretty much. It's a first step to something that can really be incredible in the long run. It won't be perfect this time out but these companies will spend the next decade improving on this and the possibilities are exciting.

The "But why" sentiment is confusing here.

I think you're overestimating the number of people who want or need an iPad sized screen on the go, especially if the phone is ergonomically "meant" to be open while being actively used since most want to be able to control their phone primarily with one hand. And when it's folded up, you sacrifice thinness which people absolutely care about.

I could be wrong, I'm no expert. This just seems like a phone for the media consumption crowd more than the mainstream who just want to take pictures, read articles, and post on social media. So it doesn't strike me as the future.

Anyword on battery life? I'd take a phone like we have now that lasts 2x longer as the same size/weight over one that folds.
