Hello resetera members! My name is MarkMan. I originally started this thread on the old forum more than 11 years ago. The reason why I love this thread is because of... perspective. It shows what people are into. It shows what people are spending their money on and it shows who pays attention to what (and why).

It can be a drain on the wallet, sure... but it can also be a reminder of things I want (or don't want).

It brings people together with common interests and it is a way for me to chronicle my journey as a gamer & individual as the years go by.

You know... I first started this thread back in 2006 with a clear goal to see REAL photos (not something I can google online) because I wanted to see the personality & individuality in what we all like.

Spent a lot of time at home this past December. It was nice to spend the holidays with family & friends! Here's what I got!

My brother got me a pair of KAWS X Air Jordan 4s for Christmas! I absolutely love the quality on these and can't wait to break them out in the new year!

Saw this in the wild and couldn't pass it up. The PS3 Sega Virtua Stick High-Grade! It's funny because I first published a review on this arcade stick back in 2008 -- which you can read here.

I got a lot of pins this month! These awesome famicom & Japanese arcade themed ones were from RGB Club!

Cool Japanese 'Back to the Future' snapback from BAIT!

Got a WHOLE bunch of BAPE X Dragon Ball Z gear. Got the limited jacket and some of the hoodies/crewnecks too.

I really liked this year's collab and thought it was one of the best ones that BAPE has done in awhile.

My first box logo hoodie. I've been trying to eat better & lose weight this past year and it helped. I was able to fit a XL (I wore 3XL in the past)! I'm a sucker for volt/neon colors & this matches my OG Air Max 95s perfectly!

New Supreme snapback lol.

A lot of people picked the Off-White X NIKE 'The Ten' collab as some of the hottest sneakers of the year. They were right. I was so fortunate to get a pair of the Jordan 1s!

Red Bull gave me wings with this awesome new fridge! I had to display it the only way I knew how. kicks, sticks & gaming.

Finally got myself a Switch! Everything except for Cave Story was a Christmas present from my family. I gave all of them the biggest hug I could.

Been wanting Gravity Rush 2 all year and finally saw it on sale on Amazon but, they sent the EU version. Oops...
At least PS4 is region free so no harm done.

I have started to collect for my consoles again since I have now really steady job and have been wanting to play RPGs I missed on the PS2. Ace Combat 4, Def Jam and Everblue 2 are games I lost in my collection from the last move with my family so, I wanted to add them back into my collection. I recently saw ChipCheezum Gextra life stream and saw him playing Jaws and was really intrigued with what I was seeing and bought it. Hot Shot Tennis came with Jaws which I hear is pretty good.

While visiting my mother for Christmas, I went down to a store called Logo's in Santa Cruz. I used to go there a lot during my teen years always trying to find cool manga. What you see in the picture is what I found in the store which I couldn't believe. This was a nostalgia trip because Gunsmith Cats and Oh My Goddess were some of my favorite manga to read back then. Got them all for a pretty good deal. Couldn't wait to go back to the house and read them.

My Hero Academia and Nadesico were Christmas presents. Everything else was bought by me alone. I saw Big Trouble in Little China for the first time in November and was completely hooked and had to get a Blu-ray of it. Can't believe it took me this long to finally see this movie. "It's all in the Reflexes."

Decided I'd finally get a subwoofer more suitable for my new space. The pioneer sub I had was decent, but it wasn't anywhere near as capable as the more powerful 12"+ subs out there.

I initially wanted an SVS, but I couldn't get over that grill, since I'd have it on a lot. The one I got has a sleeker exterior and is just as capable of rattling bones.

Then I decided I'd get a second smaller sub to even out the bass in the room. The JL by itself is great, but with some company that I placed in the diagonal corner, it's amazing. I had limited space, so I needed a small sub that could keep up with the frequency response of the JL.

The house has a concrete foundation, and the walls and windows shake whenever I turn the volume up on the JL to almost half. With both combined, it's beyond amazing. Movies and music take on a whole new dimension that I didn't even know I was missing.

Hello to december pickups!

First up flea market madness!

Music CD of the first Pokémon Movie, it was cheap enough, cool to have.

These Power Rangers mask books, they had some humidity damage but were cheap enough to ignore that.

Wii Guitar Hero 5 guitar, for one dollar! I had to have it... and it works fine too!

Now for the rest:

Tried my luck with a couple of Mario pins that were on sale. Bowser is cool.

Some dude was selling this for cheap and I never see it pop up and really wanted it, I know it's not great but I played it a lot.

Christmas sale at a game store, it's Power Rangers so I needed it.

Clearance sale at a supermarket, looks cool, it's PR.

Christmas sale at supermarket and I never see these Halo figures around and since I only know MC I got him but there are like 5 more...

Sale at a different game store and since I had to play shipping for a movie for my brother, I added these cheap things, don't have an Xbox One but whatever...

And finally it arrived! Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters for the Nintendo DS, my favorite Sentai and I had to have its game. It's pretty much new, had the cards and Club Nintendo code. I love it.

I consider myself a very-very newbie in this fine art of collecting stuff. However, this has got me in some financial woes that two times I had sell a lot of my amassed collection. I would like shake off this habit once I'm out this "financial hole", so, I would like yo ask you:

How do you budget your purchases!?!?

I have a very poor eye to judge what is a good deal or what will be difficult to obtain down the line. For example, I have my eyes set on an white/orange New 2DS XL and the Link color - scheme OG 2DS with a copy of OoT. Which one should I buy first?? I already own a New 3DS XL, but I want to keep it as a spare, have the 2DS XL as my main console, and the OG 2DS as a collection piece.

I have the same problem with software, I don't know what to prioritize.

Excuse me if this kind of posts don't belong here, I will open another thread if that's the case.

I can't answer all of your questions but as for having trouble with self control, just ask yourself if you need it now. If it's something that may sell out, you should build a budget in Excel or some spreadsheet program so you know how much extra you have to spend every month or year. In 2012 I spent literally all of my money on a video game collection and didn't play a lot of them.

If you download something like Honey on your browser it will tell you the price history of anything in an online store and will scan the web for promo codes to save you some money.

As far as prioritizing purchases, looking at the history of certain companies can help you figure out if certain games will only be available for so long.

I feel this one warranted making the effort... thanks to a very timely ebay discount promotion, I finally managed to grab myself a Cave Shooting Collection set. DVDs and books are all still sealed. I can't stop staring at it, I'm that pleased to finally have one to call my own.

This may be against the spirit of the thread I suppose but have you considered just NOT buying stuff? For people who don't have strict self-control this can be a dangerous thread to look at, seeing all the stuff that people are posting. The fact that you've already had to do a sell-off twice is concerning. I run the Investing for Retirement thread here on ERA to give you some context for where I'm coming from on this point. I used to buy vinyl records from a particular label as a collecting thing until it hit me that I had spent thousands on these things for no real purpose. I sold the majority off years ago and now just have a couple with nice covers as art pieces on the wall.

Believe me, I'm fine with purchasing expensive things as long as it's not just for the sake of owning them. I generally think about it for weeks or months before actually buying something otherwise you end up with clutter everywhere.

Anyway, no intention to rain on the pick-up parade here, just something to think about.

I think I did it because I still lived with my parents relatively for free, but last year I left for a rented apartment, and it has been a little tough haha even if I have reduced my spending. And I am trying reaaaallly hard. I think my problem is that I tend to buy stuff out of fear of not being able to get it later, or at a incredibly high price.

Wow, I have only played a handful of Cave shooters in my time, and I enjoyed them, but the actual level of content in this collection is insanely cool. This might be the coolest game set/collection I've ever seen. Congrats on the pickup!!

You Need A Budget is basically magic if you follow it. It also is a subscription service now, so that's kinda a bummer, but it has been a big help in keeping my finances under control.

It is important to ask yourself why you are collecting. Are you making an investment that you are hoping to make a return on? Do you just like having stuff around?

In regard to the 2DS question, get the work horse console first. If you really just want the Link 2DS as a collection piece, you don't want to have the potential of hurting it via use.

Got me a cheapo 4K TV.

It doesn't do HDR very well, it doesn't have wide-color gamut or local-dimming, and doesn't get that bright compared to other HDR tvs, but dammit it was only 360ish dollars and the old tv I was using wasn't very good. (rtings review link) Thing that attracted me to it along with the price was the comparitively low input lag of just over 1 frame. That's not enough to where I would feel it apparently, because I haven't noticed it yet in the short time I've had with it.

My old TV was just some really cheap 24 inch tv I got for less than 100 dollars just so I could use less electricity by not using the main living room TV (a 42 inch) all the time for gaming. I guess that's out the window with this new 40 inch though. My old TV didn't even have a "Game Mode," but it's not like games felt bad on it or anything. edit: Oh yeah, my old tv had only one HDMI port and no Optical Out, so I was using an HDMI switcher with Optical out so I could use my Astro Mixamp with it (and also so I could use 3 different consoles on it of course). It's nice not having to have that switcher eat another power plug and further clutter up the mess of wires where my TV sits.

The picture looks fantastic to me at least. First thing I did was do the Insects UHD/HDR app thingy on Xbox One X so I could switch back and forth to see the difference. Have played just bits of Gears 4, Forza 7, and Rise of the Tomb Raider and I'm really happy with it, even though it's just to hold me over until I can get what I really want (a 28inch or about that monitor that does 4K and HDR- options seem really limited for monitors now).

I also got physical copies of these. I already had digital versions that Rifftrax sells of these movies with their commentary, but I just wanted to start buying more of their physical copy stuff. I only had Plan 9 on DVD, but I don't think I ever watched it. I should probably watch that this upcoming weekend or something. The Live Reunion show is pretty great and isn't a movie, but just a bunch of shorts with all the MST3K alumni switching out to do their own commentary. Samurai Cop is... well it's Samurai Cop. I wouldn't consider it one of the better Rifftrax shows, but I like watching it and they're funny with the riffs for it.
This is now my third copy of Samurai Cop. I have the old original DVD release (at least I think it's the original release) that's 4:3, the Blu Ray copy Matt Hannon/Matthew Karedas and Mark Frazer signed for backers of the Kickstater for Samurai Cop 2, and now this.

late edit: Oh yeah, it took me a couple tries, but I was able to do this. I was never that great at this section though, and I've always been used to the Nintendo controller more for this game.

it's Gamestop exclusive, and they no longer sell it online, so if you can manage to find an in-store copy you're only getting them gutted. Thanks gamestop.

The only 2 listings for it on ebay (for the ESRB rated version) are at $80 and $125 >_< definitely one to pick up in case it becomes rare.

I've been wanting a copy of this map for a while. I never had the first Zelda game when I was a kid, but I always played it when I went to my friend's. I had Zelda II, and I ended up liking that game more than the original back then (and still now).
I ordered a manual too, but... like a moron, I forgot I already had a manual. So now I have two, I guess. I just need a gold cart copy now. I already have the grey cart (from what I understand, the grey carts are actually more rare, but I want a gold one still).
There are tears in place of the folds on the far-left and far-right sides of the map, but a lot of the other copies I saw on sale were just covered in writing.
This is all the writing that I found on this one.

"RING" written where the cave that I assume has the blue ring seller. I can't rightly remember...

Got some UHD BluRays since they weren't really that expensive. Fifth Element was only 20, and I really like this movie. Even Chris Tucker in it kinda makes me smile.
John Wick was only 10 dollars. I think it's a good movie, but I don't think I agree with all the praise I see about it. I just don't think it's more than "good." For 10 dollars though? It looks great and it's an enjoyable watch I suppose. I hadn't seen it since I rented it when it first came out on Amazon video so it was nice to revisit, I guess. The only UHD BluRay I had before these two was Hacksaw Ridge, and I kept pushing it off because I was afraid it would compel me to drink again as war movies tend to do. Finally watched it and it was a freaking great movie.

Really want to get Dredd, Leon: The Professional and Mad Max: Fury Road now. Going to have to wait for payday, though.

I have not unboxed yet. I am waiting for my wall mount to come today. I will finish the gaming room this weekend, install the wall mount, connect my brand new receiver, adjust my 5.1 setup, do cable management for the surround system.

My reclining sofa is coming today, so hopefully I can get everything done by next week.

I will post pictures later once it is finished!

Some things came in today. That's the only Funko products that will ever enter my house. The Pop variants of the Cuphead figures are proper nightmare stuff, thankfullt ehy also make normal figures, but honestly I'm still not that impressed, the paint job is quite bad. But at €12,- a pop (€19 for the Devil iirc) what can you expect?

I wanted this game since I bought the first one and loved it. But ever since it was an expensive game. This week I decided to buy it before it get even more expensive and so I visited MercadoLivre and found a great copy for cheaper than the ones listed on ebay and it was already here in Brazil. I bought on monday, it was posted on tuesday and arrived on wednesday. I'm very happy with this purchase and being able to finally add Real Bout 2 for the Neo Geo AES to the collection.
