2017: Nier Automata is an obvious pick. By far my favorite OST of the year, even though there were some awesome tracks in Cuphead or Breath of the Wild
2016: Oh my god Furi's OST is so good. Obligatory Doom track as well, incredibly innovative soundtrack.
2015: Hotline Miami 2 might be my all-time favorite. But there were some other incredible soundtracks that year: Undertale, Ori and the Blind Forest, Xenoblade X, Nuclear Throne...
2014: Hard to choose a favorite :D DKC: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Shovel Knight, Transistor, Crypt of the Necrodancer...
2013: Rayman Legends!!!!! Incredible work, one of my all-time favorites as well :D Some other great soundtracks from that year: A Link Between Worlds, Papers please, Super Mario 3D World, MGR: Revengeance

Destiny 2 unfortunately mostly follows the trend of keeping music as a barely noticable background rather than as a an aesthetic choice as important as any other, but the few times they do cut loose, the music is incredible.

Wow, where do I even begin? NieR, NieR: Automata, Atlus Sound Team (Persona, SMT, Catherine etc), Basiscape, Masafumi Takada (DanganRonpa series, The Evil Within 1, No More Heroes 1)?

I'll start off with some SMT goodness (synth madness).



*opens with soft drum beats follows it up with drop beat, things go craaaaazy* "Wooooooo" *ghost singing* *wub wub* *drum beat in background* *prolonged synth key presses* *sound of airplane taking off* *beat drop* *sound of trash being taken out* *reverb effects* - this track is just nuts. Truly inspired madness.

The composer (Kodaka) was a newcomer to the series (was previously Shoji Meguro before him) and Kodaka knocked it miles out of the park on his debut. Probably the best debut composition I've heard for a game actually.

Personal favs are easily Nier 1, Nier: A, Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles and XCX, SMTIV, and Va-11 Hall-a but there are a bunch of great OSTs

Persona 5's OST has solidified itself as the best game OST I probably heard in a decade.
The smooth acid jazz, dulcet tones and bassy rhythms are such a perfect, perfect fit with the game's theme and visuals. Incredible.

And this goes so far beyond just the obvious 'Life will change' or battle themes.
Songs like 'Sunset Bridge', 'Alleycat', 'What's going on' and 'Rivers in the Desert' are great songs on their own but woven into the game's themes so damn well.
