So I wanted to do some bigger project in this forum, and I was inspired by Rolling Stones' (questionable) ranking of the 100 best songs of the 2000s so far.

I wanted to see what Resetera would do with the same premise - so thus I made this thread for voting.

Rules

  1. Each user votes for 5 (five) TO 10 (ten) unranked songs by listing the song's name and artist in the thread below.
  2. I'd prefer a Artist : Song Name format - eg Outkast: BOB. If you want to comment, do it AFTER the song name and artist.
  3. The songs must have released in between January 1 2000 and December 31 2017.
  4. 2018 songs are illegible due to recency bias - sorry POPERA, but you can't promote your fave's current singles here.
  5. Each of your songs must have been done by a different LEAD artist. Don't put 5 Kendrick songs or 5 Radiohead songs in one list.
  6. Voting closes 22 July 2018, 6:00 AM AEST. I will only let mods submit late entries.
  7. NO MEMES. If you think Despacito is a genuinely well produced and catchy pop tune (which it is), fine. But don't go voting for things for memes.
  8. Any violation of rules 1-7 will diqualify your ranking. Every rule below this is just ettiquette
  9. Embedding videos is nice.
  10. There is no one definition of "best" - don't go arguing about semantics.
  11. Don't trash other people's taste UNLESS there is a violation of rules 1 through 7. If they do, it's fair game.
  12. Have fun.
  13. Since some of you are confused - vote for your personal favourites.

  • James Blake: Choose Me
  • Kendrick Lamar: Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst
  • Kanye West: Blood on the Leaves
  • Adele: Rolling In The Deep
  • Bon Iver: Holocene
  • FKA Twigs: Lights On
  • Amy Winehouse: Back to Black
  • Janelle Monae: Cold War
  • Frank Ocean: Pyramids
  • Childish Gambino: Redbone

The only song here that may be unfamiliar to a good lot of you is James Blake's masterpiece Choose Me.

I implore you to give it a good listen because it's brilliant IMO. It's probably the song that's generated a "what song is this?" the most from the people I've driven. It's a staple for all of my playlists.

I'll throw in my list.

The Avalanches: Since I Left You - I think The Avalanches are just straight up incredible for how they create these kaleidoscopic soundscapes out of samples from all sorts of places. I nearly picked the more humorous and outwardly eccentric Frontier Psychiatrist, but Since I Left You is a bittersweet ode to painful beautiful summers in a way only an Australian group could portray.

Britney Spears: Toxic - Yeah, that string just takes this into the stratosphere.

Carly Rae Jepsen: Run Away With Me - Pop is an artform, and Carly Rae Jepsen embraces it for all its campy, energetic, melodramatic glee. Who cares if it's dorky? Carly Rae doesn't, and she's all the better for it.

Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams: Get Lucky - This is straight up pop perfection. Shimmering, precise, yet organic production gives this an escapist, beautiful vibe that completely envelopes the mind and soul.

Frank Ocean: Pyramids - This is slick as hell. Like 3 10/10 songs combined to make something even grander.

Kanye West featuring Pusha T: Runaway - This is the most ambitious, magnificent, awe-inspiring, tragic, beautiful, cosmic, intimate, and Kanye song of the millenium. Nobody else could have done this.

Kendrick Lamar: King Kunta - HOLY FUCK THAT BASSLINE

The Killers: Somebody Told Me - Since Mr. Brightside has been claimed by the dads, I've retreated to this - a decidedly more sexually experimental and funky song than that classic.

Lorde: Green Light - I love a good buildup. It's a way to express tense, complicated emotions, and then have cathartic release, while allowing a song to continually evolve on itself and layer into a phenomenal climax. Green Light is the best buildup of the 2000s.

My Chemical Romance: Welcome to the Black Parade - Yeah, it's this century's Bohemian Rhapsody

Alright, I'll have fun with this. Excellent idea. We can even have a playlist. Hell, Spotify Era is a thing? Haha

Hmm...

"Seven Nation Army", by The White Stripes, released in 2003
"Cute Without The "E"", by Taking Back Sunday, released in 2002
"I'm Shipping Up To Boston", by Dropkick Murphys, released in 2006
"I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", by Incubus, released in 2004
"Skinny Love", by Bon Iver, released in 2008
"Burn The Witch", by Radiohead, released in 2016
"The Louvre", by Lorde, released in 2017
"Shake It Off", by Florence + Machine, released in 2011
"All These Things That I've Done", by The Killers, released in 2004
"Image of the Invisible", by Thrice, released in 2005

These are two of the most arguably unknown on my list but also two of my favorites of all time:

I may have gotten too excited with my last choice. I'm not sure if that's my absolute favorite from Bon Iver, but it's a testament to his greatness.

That's the only choice I'm not sure of.

I think this thread could work better if we made 10 songs instead of 5. I mean, 18 years is a lot of time to cover. I have other more recent songs that I'd like to include, but the 5 limit is screwing me over. :(

I'll have to think about this. I don't really hate the Rolling Stone list either, although I disagree with some of its picks and rankings.

OK, I made it so that people can vote 5 tracks to 10 tracks to allow for both camps. Also, I might add Pyramids to my list, but what would I take off?

Gorillaz: Melancholy Hill
Frank Ocean: Self Control
Gotye: Hearts a Mess
Architecture in Helsinki: Contact High
Carly Rae Jepson: Boy Problems

I don't really have a "canon" in my head. The best I can do is just run through my playlist and the songs i think are special at the moment.

I always go into these with a pop music critic pants on, but quickly find out I just have to trust my heart and name songs I will never ever get bored of because of how they speak to me personally.

Pink: Try

I'm not a fan on her music generally, but this song is just so great. Also the music video made me appreciate modern dance so there is that.

Sia: Elastic Heart

Anecdote: my wife works in child protection and she told me to watch the music video saying that's what my work is like.

Mew: 156

One of those songs I spent a whole night listening on repeat from MySpace when I first found out about this band.

Horse the Band: Shapeshift

This song is a ride.

Devin Townsend: Deadhead

This song is arguably very simple, but the emotion Devin carries is something else. I have no trouble believing she really is a goddess to him. I prefer live the version.

The Gaslight Anthem: The '59 Sound

Nostalgia for a time and place I was never part of. For some reason The Gaslight Anthem always makes me feel everything is going to be okay in the end.

Steven Wilson: Hand Cannot Erease

To me this is one of those songs where you genuinely feel like the songwriter sees your life and into your soul.

These are the songs that came to me at this time. I might add something before the deadline if that's okay?

Alabammy
I got like 70% through this list before realizing the common theme, then just went with it.

Alabama Shakes:
"Hold On" (2011)

Their sophomore album Sound & Color has some fantastic tracks, including "Don't Wanna Fight," "Future People," and the haunting "Gimme All Your Love," but their big breakout hit from their record store days is what first captured my heart.

Kutiman: "I'm New" (2009)

Kind of a dark horse pick -- it's the best track from Israeli artist Kutiman and his brilliant YouTube mash-up project ThruYOU. Weaving together cello practice, amateur rap, living room crooning, and dozens of other snippets into a compelling audiovisual masterpiece.

Radiohead: "There There" (2003)

I love Radiohead, and while my top tracks are from the OK Computer era ("Airbag" is my all-time favorite song), I was still torn between "How to Disappear Completely," "Pyramid Song," "Weird Fishes," etc. But "There There" is a straight-up banger, the best track on their most 2000s-y album, and has an intriguing music video to boot.

Arcade Fire: "Wake Up" (2004)
Outkast: "Hey Ya" (2003)
Animal Collective: "My Girls" (2009)
Gnarls Barkley: "Crazy" (2006)
Coldplay: "Yellow" (2000)
Kanye West: "Power" (2010)
Lin-Manuel Miranda: "My Shot" (2015)

Man this is gonna be really hard, especially because it's not just this decade but 2000's. I'll post a list, but I'll have to think for a while.

Any list that doesn't include Get Low by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz is not a list I can respect.

Is this supposed to be what our favorite songs are or the ones that we think are the best songs. Because for me that is two totally different things.
Do whatever you feel. Like I said in the rules, I don't want arguments about the semantics. Most people are treating this like favourites though, so it's fine to do that.

I want to get in on this but it sounds way too hard. I didn't keep up on maintaining a music library really well so remembering my favorite songs from high school and uni would be too difficult.

EDIT: and Smash Mouth : All Star doesn't quite make it (released May 1999), what's even the point!

Bell Witch: Mirror Reaper

Marilyn Manson: Devour
David Bowie: Blackstar
Sleep: Dopesmoker
Alice Cooper: Gimme
BLS: Love Reign Down
Cradle of Filth: Nymphetamine Fix
Motörhead: One More Fucking Time
Fear Factory: Invisible Wounds (Dark Bodies)
The Devil You Know: Bible Black

Way to difficult for me.
