Sorry, Nickelback. Here Are the 50 Greatest Canadian Artists of All Time

From its sweet-ass health care system to its foxy nepo-baby prime minister to its absolutely banging national anthem, Canada has always had it going on. Sure, this hellish summer-wildfire shit has …

Since Saturday was Canada Day, Rolling Stone decided to take a stab at ranking the top 50 Canadian recording artists of all time. There are many expected faces in there, some unexpected faces, and plenty of questionable omissions. Which is to be expected for a Rolling Stone list.

Top 10

10: Celine Dion
9: Alanis Morissette
8: The Weeknd
7: Shania Twain
6: The Band
5: Drake
4: Leonard Cohen
3: Rush
2: Neil Young
1: Joni Mitchell

...and a totally unexpected appearance at #50

50: Snow

Guess I'm old because seeing artists like Drake and The Weeknd above Gordon Lightfoot is basically blasphemous.

Also, I don't care what anyone says Nickelback's solid. Some of the best drunken campfire singalongs. Recently saw Chad do an acoustic version of "How You Remind Me" live and it was awesome.

Cohen should have been nr 1 tbh, no disrespect to Mitchell ofc but Cohen's songwriting and storytelling is on par with Dylan Imho

I bet that a list of top Canadian artists made by Canadians would be much different than a list made by non-Canadians.

Tegan and Sara are on the list, so it's all good for me. Although they should have been top 10, fo sho.

I would put Neil Young #1 but I won't complain too much with who they have above him.

The vitriol for Nickleback is so overdone and silly. They're not the best band but they go toe to toe with most radio rock bands.

Yeah, hating on Nickelback and then putting someone like Avril Lavigne really high on the list is goofy to me. When you do something like that it seems like the only reason you hate Nickelback is because you're "supposed" to hate Nickelback.

They're great. Glad Metric, Feist, DFA 1979, and Broken Social Scene all made it too. They were part of an incredible scene.

Wooo! BNL made the list!

(They mean a lot to me, okay?)
Brian Wilson still gets me lost in the feels.

The Guess Who ranked 26? Awful. The combined BTO Burton Cummings universe is insulted

You're underestimating Avril's overall influence. She wasn't just a popular musician, she was an icon who had an outsized impact on teen culture and fashion in the '00s.

It's aesthetics. It's cool to hate on Nickelback. They weren't that great, but so are most pop acts.

Rush is low at 3, I'd put the Holy Triumvirate way above Young and Mitchell but it's Rolling Stone, so whatever.

From the Rush entry: "No band from the U.S. or U.K. was bold enough to meld metal and prog in the Seventies — to achieve that glorious fusion, we needed a trio from the great land of Canada"

Guess they never heard of King Crimson.

Nice to see Rush and Neil Young in the top 3 where they belong.

No Moist is disappointing, a few names missing and more than a few I'm like "who?" Or "eh".

Broken Social Scene is my all time favourite band and New Pornographers are right there in the top5. Canadian superbands are amazing!
