people actually buy physical books still?

i feel like that's the biggest waste of space/resources. save a fkin tree

Barnes and Noble seems to be making a come back so I guess there's a market there (at least bigger than for physical movies/music these days). I wonder if eReaders just haven't taken off in the same way.

I'm very curious about the numbers tbh. I don't know anyone who has a dedicated player for movies, just game consoles

Would be funny if books and vinyls are the only physical media to prevail
lol yea right. People keep thinking that this is 2006 or something. How do I watch this disc on my Ipad or phone. A lot of kids just watch their phone screen for entertainment not a tv.

Yea it's kinda found its footing again thanks to book publishers finally getting better at social media. TikTok has also been a good boon for it. And as someone who used to read digitally but switched back to physical. It's a great way to just not stare at a screen all day haha.

Last time I was at Target (back on Friday), their DVD/BD section was literally just one shelf and that was it. Like my local Walmart has more DVDs and BDs (although some of that is because they have the big ass $5 DVD bin at Walmart). I will say that they did have a decent selection for music though as well as physical games, it was just TV shows and movies that was like 'Wow dang this is worse than Best Buy was before they stopped selling them'.

I legit struggle to read e-books, there have been times where I've borrowed an e-book from the library, try and read it, and then just give up and either borrow a physical copy from the library instead or just go and buy it at Barnes & Noble.

It's something seeing movies shelves shrink in every store but also the proportion of what is left slowly but surely turning all DVD as well. I've seen the sales charts and I get it but man, DVD being the undisputed... it wasn't supposed to be this way lol

Pretty sure physical books still outsell digital books. Also, paper is renewable and actually recyclable unlike other physical media.

Edit: yeah looked it up, physical books outpace their digital counterparts and it's not even close. On top of that some recent years actually saw an increase in physical, while digital declined.

You claimed most people don't own Blu-ray or DVD players anymore, which simply isn't true. If you own a PlayStation or Xbox, you own a movie player. Physical sales are obviously down but "no one owns movie players anymore" just isn't correct.

We are becoming a society of renters
It's really scary that we're heading into the inevitable direction of people not caring for owning shit due to "convenience" because all it screams to me is that we're gonna end up on the timeline where in 5-10 years people are gonna want to revitalize using DVD players/physical media again and instead of it being affordable, the prices are gonna skyrocket due to the rise in popularity we'll inevitably see during that era due to how bad Ads will get on streaming services or due to the pricing of streaming services targeting people out of their price range. I know people will say there's no way it'll happen but it just seems like the obvious direction we're heading in.

Damn, their Target Circle deals on preorders and games are great. Not to mention the buy 2 get 1 free then cancel the other two.

Myself and most people I know own a dedicated 4K/bluray/DVD player.

I think I even read that physical movie sales are rebounding.

I wish I knew how much of the physical market Amazon takes up

Physical copies of various things there still appear to sell well (and sell out even!)

Losing their buy two get the third free on 4ks would suck. And it already feels like 4ks are getting more expensive with slowed drops in prices and less crazy sales.

Is this ALL physical media, as in no movies, books, records, games, everything?
Or is it just no movies and games?

I have noticed that they seemed to try going heavy into manga, but then just kind of let it die out and haven't really restocked in a while.

This is potentially true and something most people could assume just by looking at their current selection of movies. But this isn't a reliable source, just like the thread about the "Sam Raimi in talks to direct Spider-Man 4" rumor wasn't from a reliable source. This account posts fake news and shit-posts.

The weird thing about this guy, is that he does post actual exclusive things. He never posts sources much, and does do a lot of hot-takes, memes, and drama stuff, but if he says something is coming to 4k, it almost always does. He was the first source that posted about Best Buy doing away with in stores/online that I saw too, before news broke out officially everywhere. The AI stuff... not sure if it was a meme or he was had too.

As for Target, yeah I def believe This. When one company does something, they all decide to copy.

Most people don't read many books a year, so it makes little sense to buy a dedicated reading device. And when people want to read they are doing so to get away from their phones or tablets. So paper books outsell digital books.

I personally find it very hard to go back to physical books. I've had a Kindle since 2010 and it's just so much more of an immersive experience. I still get physical books, but only if I want a signed copy or the book is special to me and I want something physical to represent it. There are a lot of small publishers that put out incredible limited edition books. And then I still will mostly read them on my Kindle.

And when AI starts doing everything capitalism will figure out a way to make services still provided by actual people "artisanal" or something and charge people more for it

lol It'll happen

We're gonna be paying double, if not triple, the prices of some of these movies in less than 10 years because shit like this is probably gonna actually happen. It's so sad to say but you're so damn right.

It truly does. It's not shocking per say but I hate how much people are willing to see physical media die due to convenience with the ad-riddled future we're heading in, you'd think it'd be the last thing people would want.

The amount people who are willing to give up stuff for convenience lately is insane honestly. First it was online privacy and shit and now giving up physical ownership of things.

All this crap with everything becoming a subscription is annoying me too. I like to buy things and only have to pay for them once. Not pay a monthly fee for all eternity just to have fucking access to something I buy.

Eventually stores are just going to be for food, clothes, and some home goods, aren't they?
Shipping will be a thing you do because you have to, not becaue it's a fun way to get out of the house.

We'll all just sit at home all day and have everything delivered or streamed to us. No need to go out and be part of the world.

I guess this is what I get for years of joking about how I'd like to be a hermit and never interact with people. Turns out I really like having excuses to go out and be around people.

And what's even worse is that we're seeing these services we all love to use due to convience continuously rise in prices on a near 6 month occurrence (at least that's what it feels like) but yep, I totally agree with you. I don't want to lose the ability to actually own the shit I love.

I enjoy looking at physical stuff, even if I'm not planning on buying something (and sometimes I do). Already online shopping can be annoying. I buy collectibles that share a single SKU sometimes, and online will sell "at random" and then scalpers (aka online toy stores) will post then at bloated prices. You pretty much need to look for them in stores yourself.

But besides that, I like looking at different shops and things when travelling. I find it fun, or like, finding a retro game store or something to poke around in. Getting stuff at home is losing it's special feeling for me.

America already has a third spaces problem when compared to Europe - the way we've elected to do urban planning makes people getting together difficult. And when you have capitalism mandating efficiency more and more versus experience (compare the inside of a McDonalds 30 years ago to today, they've purposely become uncomfortable so you just eat your shit and get out) there's less spaces for people to commingle. The last great third space of America was the mall and we all know where that's been going.

I used to go to Target sometimes just to get a coffee and shoot the shit with my boyfriend but that's happening less and less lately.

Physical media is only one small section in any Target. You guys are acting like there's no reason for the place to exist now. Haha.

You know how Targets are always packed with people? They're buying everything else.

I don't like this trend. I'm on the physical media train until it's completely forced on me to go digital and I'll hate it.

My local Target still has a decent size section for movies.

Games are hit or miss. Would buy more if there were decent deals.

Not all books are preferable experiences on an e-reader. I'm fine for linear novels on a Kindle, but anything where I want to jump around or if there's a visual element to it, I'll prefer a physical book every time.
