Today's demon is Divine Cherub! This design has only ever appeared in one game: Devil Summoner. This marks it's first 3D appearance and second appearance at all in the entire franchise. I absolutely love this one, and they really nailed the animations. It has a little eye that moves on the side, one of the mouths shoot projectiles at you when you encounter it in the field. That unique skill looks sick. Again, current day Atlus modeling an animations are incredible. I remember when I got one of the Kazuma Kaneko Works books that covered Devil Summoner, I saw this thing in there and always wanted it to come back. Looks like I got that wish!

Cherub has had a few other designs in the franchise, but none of them were ever in a 3D game, including even NINE and Dx2.

This design is from SMTI:

They only show up as statues in SMTII, but they had a different design:

One some of you may have seen before was the Soul Hackers version, this version was also used in Strange Journey and both IV games to name a few:

There were a few other designs used in Megami Tensei II, Last Bible III, DemiKids, and Devil Children.

Tomorrow's demon is UMA Hare of Inaba! I didn't realize the UMA race would be in. That stands for "Unidentified Mysterious Animal". I don't know if any current demons in the game will be filed under that, but one could dream...

I did not notice that lol. Maybe they want to avoid some sensitive topic because of the shoe? I have no idea what that would even be.
To me, the uncensored art just looks wrong. I don't get why the shade just cuts off randomly, it being perfectly vertical makes me think something went wrong when the art was being exported.

No Shuichi Ikeda for Dagda's Japanese voice... I was sure he'd be in when the story blurb for the DLC confirmed this Dagda comes from another universe. Also, interesting that one of the conversation shots has Dagda going on about this world being no different from his original world, while the shot shown afterwards has him saying this world is interesting. I guess he gets some character development through the Demon Haunt conversations.

Wow, I wish I could replay those 3DS games now. I have ergo problems with handheld devices and just can't physically do it anymore.

It's good to see Dagda and Danu together!

I did not know they're doing DLC on these videos, that's cool, but they seem to be separate from the regular days.

Deity Dagda has only had this design in two games: SMTIV: Apocalypse, where he had a pretty central role, and of course SMTV: Vengeance.

He has had other designs in games such as the Persona 2 duology and DemiKids.

He did not appear in the base game at all. Danu, his mother, appeared in SMTV though. She wasn't even DLC, but people did find an unfinished Dagda model in the game's files. I assume that eventually became this.

Yes, I was a little confused since it's off-schedule. The Matador post had me wondering if DLC characters would be included in the countdown since that could reduce the amount of new base game demons we seen in these... Glad to see him though, he was a favorite.

He better have voice lines in the english dub so I can hear that Irish accent again

You know it, it's delightful.

Today's demon is UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal) Hare of Inaba. His first 3D appearance (in an Atlus-made game) was Soul Hackers 2, making this game his second! He has a very cute version in the Devil Children games. Note that in Vengeance, he seems to be a fusion accident exclusive demon. I wonder if Enigma and UMA demons are all fusion accident exclusive. Those type of demons are usually considered the "out there" weirdos in most of their games. I specifically remember that many (if not all? Not entirely sure) UMA and Enigma demons all were part of that special hidden demon scan you get in the second dungeon. What's even more interesting (and I just realized this) is that Vengeance will be the FIRST Atlus-made 3D game to have the UMA and Enigma races. I'm very excited for the possibilities out of that and hope it's not a bunch of demons of other races reclassified.

His first appearance was Devil Summoner, and like a lot of demons in Devil Summoner that would go on to appear in later games, he had some of his colors changed for Soul Hackers. Left is Devil Summoner, right is Soul Hackers.

latest
latest

What's particularly interesting about this one is that the Soul Hackers one actually approved it to make him look even more like he's stitched together. You can clearly see on his torso that he still had that look in Devil Summoner. You can see the stitch under his eye in both versions, but Soul Hackers makes it more clear because the part of his face near his left ear is a totally different color than the other ear. It's a nice improvement!

Tomorrow's demon is Fiend Pale Rider! How do I know it's Pale Rider and not one of the other three riders? Pale Rider carries a scythe! The other three have different weapons/objects in their hands.

Today's demon is Fiend Pale Rider! From what I can find, his first appearance seemingly dates back to the PS1 version of SMTI. He had a slightly different design than what we know today, although really it's basically the same, but a different pose.

latest

The original versions of Persona 3 (OG P3, FES, and P3P) also used this design but with different colors:
latest

However, his 3D Model in P3 is actually in the pose of the one we know today, which originated from Nocturne. He was DLC in the original SMTV as he was part of the Demi-Fiend DLC, but probably his most well known role was in Nocturne. He is one of the Fiends you will encounter at a certain place (as long as you're playing the Maniax version) and have to defeat for their Menorah to be able to complete the Labyrinth of Amala.

Tomorrow's demon is Holy Unicorn!

Today's demon is Holy Unicorn! It first appeared in Megami Tensei II with it's first SMT appearance being SMT1. It's a staple of most games (except the original V apparently). It's first 3D appearance was technically NINE, but outside of NINE it was Nocturne. It's appeared many times in 3D since, including Soul Hackers 2.

Unicorn was my dear savior of my sanity during the Domain of Sloth in if... The only way to beat that dungeon is to pass enough moon phases which means walking up and down a hallway for literal hours. Once you're comfortably able to slap anything that you encounter in the dungeon, you should definitely fuse a Unicorn because they have Estoma! Estoma is incredibly useful here.

Tomorrow's demon is Foul Mad Gasser!

Noticed something interesting here (should be timestamped). While it's obvious it's two different battles, it IS interesting that in one Nahobino is in the new sickle form, and in the other he's in the normal long blue hair form. I assume the most logical explanation is that he's the blue hair version until whatever happens that causes him to turn into the scythe version. But I also wonder if it's possible to change on your own maybe? Both battles happen in the same locale.

Given the very clear Serph parallels of the new form, yeah, I've kind of expected it will be a powerup state we can swap to.

But we'll see.

Today's demon is Foul Mad Gasser! His first appearance was in Soul Hackers, and his first 3D appearance in an Atlus-made game is Soul Hackers 2, making Vengeance his second 3D appearance! It's cool to see his animation for Poison Breath, we didn't really get to see that much in Soul Hackers 2 since your demons aren't seen outside of Sabbaths. He's involved in a sidequest in SH2, but there's not much other major roles he's in for any game. He has only ever had one design and has appeared in a few other 2D games. I particularly love the fact that they're bringing this guy back into the spotlight. I always loved the story behind him being the Mad Gasser of Matoon.

Tomorrow's demon is....Genma Amanozako??? I don't really understand why but that Silhouette is definitely her.

It's weird because she had a video for the original SMTV, and none of the other demons in daily videos for Vengeance had a video for the original.

Today's demon is Genma Amanozako! I'm not really sure why she got a video for Vengeance. With the exception of her signature skill (which I'll get to in a minute), she seems pretty much the same. She first appeared in the original SMTV, and she seems to have the same role here. I'm curious how it will evolve for Vengeance, but I'm honestly expecting it to be the same anyway. You encounter very early on in your first trip to Da'at as she's being attacked by a gang of Pretas. You politely tell the Pretas to fuck off and talk to the hand....blue hand sword. Amanozako joins you, but not as a playable demon, really a guide that will help you find hidden treasure (or possibly hidden encounters). They have said there will be more function to the navigator demons, but so far we have seen the player directly controlling both Nahobeeho and Amanozako in this video just now. I wonder how that works, I don't know of anywhere they have said so. Something I found really interesting in the trailer was this:

View: https://i.imgur.com/AFFkqEG.jpg

This is her signature skill, and it's interesting how it perfectly fits her lore, especially the subtitle on the screen at the moment. I love that they're doing things like this for the signature skills. She's not obtainable as a fighting party member until late in the game, through a side quest. That looks to still be the case in Vengeance judging by the fact that when she's fighting, you see her fighting higher level demons.

Tomorrow's demon will be Wilder Fenrir!

Today's demon is Wilder Fenrir! He's had a couple of other designs, most notable in my opinion was SMTI:

latest

I don't tend to talk about IMAGINE much in these posts, but I feel like this one is worth bringing up. This design was actually used in that game:

latest

It was also used in one other game, Raidou 2:

35-Up091-0071.jpg

Other designs were for games like the Last Bible games, or modifications of the generic "doggo" sprite from Persona 1 or the Persona 2 duology. The Devil Children one looks like it could pass for a Digimon:

latest

It also supposedly appeared in NINE, but I can't find any images of it. I assume it used the SMTI design, and if that's the case, then it's first 3D appearance (outside of Dx2) with it's current design was Soul Hackers 2! It was great to see it there, and I'm glad to see it still shines under SMTV's shader and art style. This design's first appearance was Soul Hackers.

Tomorrow's demon will be Jirae Kaya-no-Hime. Weird that it's another repeat as she was in the original SMTV. Maybe they're just doing repeats for Doi demons that first appeared in SMTV? By my count that's 16 (minus two for Amanozako and Kaya-no-Hime) without counting "spoiler" demons.

Today's demon is Jirae Kaya-no-Hime! She had a design in Giten Megami Tensei, that PC MegaTen developed by ASCII corporate in 1997.

latest

Not sure what's going on here with this design, but that seems par for the course for Giten.

The current design of Kaya-no-Hime first appeared in the original SMTV, as she was a brand new demon for that game. She's returned in Vengeance.

This design actually reminds me of a different demon (and I remember Larrue pointed this out on Twitter before the original V released): Oshira-sama

latest

It only appeared in Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers.

Tomorrow's demon is Jaki Gremlin!

Looks like they are adding a new difficulty into vengeance called Godborn. Wonder if it'll be like Merciless in P5R, but actually difficult throughout the game

That sounds sick, I'll probably play on Godborn.

I had wondered what was with the fusion skills, that looks really cool.

Also that animation of Gogmagog slamming the whole party was pretty sick.

It says "Recruit in-game friends" and I wonder what exactly that means. I assumed initially it was going to be like SMT I, II, IV, and IV:A where the game dictates which humans you have and when they're with you. That sounds like it could maybe be Persona 1 style (except maybe not permanently for the entire game) where you can say yes to recruiting or tell them to fuck off, or maybe it's if your alignment is in the right place they offer to join you. It's also more likely that I am just reading too much into that.

All that said, I know they said the humans won't join you as playable in Canon of Creation (other than that major spoiler thing), but it sounds kind of weird to have this mechanic and then not have Tao with you in Shinegawa (the second Da'at) when in the original, she was technically with you and would heal Nahobino after every encounter.

Don't own a Switch so was never able to jump on the original release. I really enjoy difficulties that make you really use the systems at your disposal. I've played plenty of Nocturne - will hard be doable for a first run for someone who can use their head?

I think so, the game gives you plenty of tools to work with, and you're going to have even more in this expanded version. It can be frustrating at times, but SMT main has always been really good at creating battle system where the player and the enemy have the same set of moves and actions.

Perfect - just my jam. Seriously pumped for this, I was so bummed when V never came to any other platforms.

The Imagine model is a higher fidelity version of the Nine one:

From a SMT Nine wiki (if you ever want to look up any other demons):
ore-game.com

In general, the only good way to find models from older maligned games (like Ronde and this) is via these sorts of impressive projects. I think I linked the Ronde one during the original run of demon videos.

EDIT: The models all try to hold the pose of the art they're adapted from btw. Other examples:

Anzu

Sarasvati

Etc. Was a cool thing to do for the first 'real' attempt at 3D models (the demons in Ronde were drawn by Hisao Nakamura / are different).

EDIT 2: Was the Soul Hackers 2 videos where Ronde was brought up.

That's cool, I love when games do special team-up abilities. Has a SMT game ever done that before?
Not technically SMT, but Persona 2 and 3 have that. P2 is mostly just and Persona, but the type of spell is what matters. P3/FES/P3P have the fusion attacks where you have to have the right combination of Personas in your stock for it and you can use it. P3R kept some of this, but as Theurgy and the Personas just have to be in your Compendium.

Oh man I am surprised there's a site like that for NINE too. I'm actually surprised they reused any models from NINE even in IMAGINE. If you compare the difference between the NINE and Nocturne models on some demons, the difference is very noticeable.

Yeah, iunno what dictated which game used what. Like Sarasvati, the Nine model is the only version of her SMT 2 design in 3D, as Nocturne has the modern one that appears in it, Imagine, P3/4/5, etc.

And Nocturne released less than 3 months after Nine, soooo...

icegif-660.gif

EDIT: Also, I forgot to complain about Dagda's animations. It's super lame he just punches shit for a long time.

I'm also just... Not a fan of these extravagant animations that are designed to be fast-forwarded/skipped in general. They're impressive, but I really don't think they fit in mainline SMT. They're the sort of thing you see in power fantasies or things trying to lampoon them (like when Atelier busts out a super long animation featuring exploding pastries).

W/e I guess. I really want to stop being negative about V and this rerelease of it, but I can't and it bums me out.

Worried that all these new combat tools are just going to nuke the challenge. I know this game has difficulty modes, but Atlus is really not good at fine tuning them for all the busted abilities they give you.
