I love the manic sugar rush metal you get in bullet soul infinite burst, that fits the game perfectly

Pink Sweets Suicide Club is a fan-hacked arrange mode of the original Pink Sweets (2006) by the Four Horsemen group, which has released a ROM patcher for the arcade version. This version was spotted extremely briefly on location at Takadanobaba Mikado Arcade (Shinjuku, Tokyo) and Stunfest 2018 (Rennes, France):

Changes from the original PS:

- Rank meter visible on screen, starting at 350.000 and maxing out at 999.999
- Zan counter visible on screen and lowered to 1200 (original PS was 2500)
- You can collect up to three rose hips. Third one appears in the middle right below your ship
- Abundant changes in the background graphics
- The flashy blue bullets that e.g. the first Scrambled Egg shoots after its defeat are now red and much easier to see
- Stage 5 is now named "Crevasse" and looks nothing like a desert anymore
- Generally more bullets, faster increasing rank and higher difficulty
- Some enemies have a higher resilience (e.g. the midsized round enemies at the beginning of stage 4)
- Snake sections seem more fair (?)
- Stage 5 boss laser attack is now much easier and not a problem anymore
- No infinite lives. Maximum lives in stock is 5

Additional tweaks were made to the Stunfest version, notably:

- You will also get an extend when the zan counter rolls reaches 5000 (i.e. 5k enemies killed with Rose Cracker) and not only when it reaches 0 (i.e. 1k enemies killed with Shot)

(Above notes via Plasmo - Shmups Forum)

Okay, just how good/bad is the experience of playing Zero Gunner 2- on Switch if your only memory of playing the game before was about a decade ago on a Dreamcast CD-R a couple times.

I was really looking forward to that game's release until I read about how messed up the port is from the original. With the patches is it at least still fun for a relative noob?

Same boat as you and I've enjoyed it, FWIW.

I just picked up RefRain - prism memories - . So far seems like a cool shmup. Is there anything I should keep in mind?

Also, I'm using my Steam controller for it. Should I use a fightstick instead?

This sounds amazing in its changes and as a fan of it I would love to find that rom. I own the 360 Pink Sweets/Muchi Pork combo disk and was surprised when I found the Infamous Pink Sweets more to my liking. Its incredibly obtuse and unfair at times so these changes have me pumped. Hope I run into this someday.

ZeroRanger is the biggest shmup release of the year for me. Can't wait!!!!

iFJW7kx.gif

I feel like high-end shmups being released for on PC has drastically slowed down. Companies have seemed to move on to PS4 and Switch.

Yeah, I've noticed that, can't blame them for wanting to make money I suppose.
The switch is still in it's honeymoon period, I've seen people who only ever play AAA stuff buying games on that that they wouldn't normally bother with, which is great. Lots of people being introduced to shmups and roguelites and stuff.

Yeah, ZeroRanger looks good, and we've also got Rolling Gunner and Rival Megagun to look forward to

Yeah I'm really hyped for ZR. Felt like I've had the free version with the different name on my desktop for like a decade lol. Def. shooters being quiet on pc but I'm always grateful that we got some the last few yrs.

It's excellent! Build up a chain of 8 popcorn enemies and then cash out by using your special weapon on the larger enemies to reap gold.
Discovering and pulling off the "breaks" in each level is great fun as well,

The only thing I can think of is that some folk have readability issues with the restricted palette.
I don't think I did, either that or I got used to it very quickly, but if you do, there's stuff you can change in the options menu.
You can change the colour of your ship by pressing up and down during the character select, I like to change that to dark green.

If you're having trouble finding a "loadout" you're comfortable with, try Val, arc-caster, power shot. Not too fast, not too slow.

I bought Bullet Soul Infinite Burst on Steam but it seems to run at 720p only. I'm on a 4k monitor. Is there anything I can do to make this not be so janky?

i'm a bit of a shmup neophyte. well i always like them when i play them, but don't have extensive experience..they're so good on switch :) i utterly love gunbird 2 (way more than ikaruga, personally!) so had to check out more psikyo stuff.. dragon blaze is lovely, but i have a question - anyone know how the magic/charge shot is supposed to work? the controls screen says to release fire after a certain amount of time, same as gunbird, strikers etc. there's no mention of the magic guage that i can see but i figured that out.. however it seems to be fully automatic? ie, fire button (NOT autofire) just endlessly fires and then releases a charge shot automatically when the meter's full (including, as soon as you start the game) - there's no hold/release mechanic at all? feels like a bug but i can't find any mention online, maybe the control instructions are wrong? or am i just misunderstanding something? thanks!

now..i needs more psikyo games..

I've tinkered with it and I could not figure it out. Buying a 3D shmup on STEAM with resolution support is a 50/50 chance. The Raiden series is another culprit as well as Caladrius Blaze. The games would benefit hugely from the clarity it would offer.

Ikaruga and Eschatos support high resolutions and they look amazing.

That is usually on of the first things I try with these games. The only thing that would work on these games is editing the hex files. But even then it doesn't seem to work from what I've done.

The Psikyo games are my favorite as a beginner, too.

They strike a really good balance of everything for me.

You should get Tengai! I also adore the Strikers 1945 games.

My experience with its predecessor I posted earlier, this might be helpful to you ...
BULLET SOUL is a lot of fun. It's a bummer that they hard locked to 720p. I tried GeDoSaTo, but no luck. ReShade with one of the ported RetroArch CRT shaders saved my day:

oZfzn91.png

AUlQwpM.png

(It looks nicer in motion, uguu, but you get the idea)

Many of the 360 to Steam ports and even certain doujin titles are hard locked 720p internal rendering and GeDoSaTo isn't able to get its hooks in there. It's a shame that Windows/drivers default to bilinear scaling, which always leaves the picture quality soft and blurry. I'd rather have a nearest-neighbor option for most SHMUP cases, fat and sharp pixels for life.

Thanks! Downloading the game now.

I also keep hearing things about RefRain, but BLUE REVOLVER was higher on my wishlist.

Edit: BLUE REVOLVER is good. Played for about half an hour and am looking forward to figuring out the game more.

Refrain left me a bit cold, I tried it again a few months ago when folk were bigging it up on the shmups subreddit, but nah, still couldn't get into it. Might just be me.

Is there a guide on how to play DonDonPachi Resurrection well? I feel like I'm seriously missing how to combo effectively and to be a decent player.

I'm planning on redoing one of my fight sticks with a Seimetsu stick. Are Seimetsu buttons good as well (I've only ever used Sanwa and the Hayabusa buttons)? What layout do Japanese arcades tend to use for Cave shooters?

I prefer Seimitsu buttons, some people prefer Sanwa but I find them to be too oversensitive, I tried Sanwa buttons for a while on one stick but just resting your finger on the bomb button can have it going off by accident and that was enough for me to swap them out.

I like auto fire for my first finger, fire for my second, hyper for third and bomb for fourth.

For the shot/bomb games it's shot, bomb, auto shot. Not sure about DDP DFK, but for DOJ and SDOJ the hyper is triggered by the bomb button.

For ESP.Ra.De and Espgaludas it's shot, [game specific thing], bomb. There's an auto shot on the fourth button if it's wired up (the old arcade standard, JAMMA, only had three buttons normally). Guwange might have the same layout but it's been while since I've played that.

For other games...I forget or don't know.

I'm super happy.

'Mutant Storm Reloaded' is one of my favorite twin stick shooters, holding a very special place in my heart. Thanks to a design that feels much more close to a Japanese shmup, sometimes seems like a forgotten Dremacast shmup created by G.rev, the same feeling in its controls, with a truly special sound design.

There was a sequel, 'Mutant Storm Empire', that was released in Xbox 360. Its creators, the British arcade specialists PomPom Games stopping their business just after the release of this game. There was a completed PC port, this port was planned to be released in Steam. But this never happened. And there is not a single database listing the game for PC.

But still, this weekend I found that the game was released in Russia. It seems that the game was distributed with a PC magazine by an obscure Russian company that obtained the license of the game.

And I have found a torrent with this DVD release of the game.

So finally, I will have an opportunity of playing this forgotten lost gem of PomPom games, their latest shmup release, not less.

But it breaks my heart to think that there is not a legal way of purchasing the game. And that such an important company in the contemporary arcade scene, saw their last game ending in this way. Only distributed in a PC magazine, in Russia.

man, I know this is nothing, but I just hit 40+ million in Danmaku 3 on Easy Spirit mode and I feel like a king. just want to re-emphasize for anyone interested in the genre on the Switch that this is a great place to start. i've had a ton of fun with the boss rush (practice any boss at will!), learning the stages (since you can select any of them to practice too!), adjusting strategy for maximum graze, thinking about enemy appearance patterns, etc.

such a fun, fun shmup. makes me excited for Ikaruga and others.

I know that speeds change depending on the shot type you use in BR (power is fastest, variable middle, wide slowest) but is val inherently faster or slower than mae? I'm kind of struggling through a normal 1cc with a sanwa JLF before I pick up a LS-56, wondering if I would have better luck playing a slightly slower craft than Mae/Power/Laser

Both ships move at the same speed. I think you're right, you'll just have to experiment with the different shot types if you want to try something slower.
I always played with the wide shot at first but they changed the speed in a patch, unfocused movement became really slow and it was taking ages to get to the other side of the screen so I had to change.

Ah okay gotcha. What special shot were you using? Just curious, trying out different combinations. I'm settling on Mae/Follow/Laser but I haven't really given Val an honest try yet.

I like the arc caster, though it's probably just because it's what I'm used to and it's easy to use. Judging by the leaderboards, the hyper laser is the one to go with. Next time I play I'm gonna try and get good with that.

New SHMUP from the "upside down realm"* is heading to Steam and Switch.
(*looks like you are the "boss" mowing down the peasants in this one)

STARSHIP AVENGER Operation: Take Back Earth / スターシップアベンジャー 地球奪還大作戦

Not that traditional, but I'd be up for this.

That's a great way to put it. There's some sort of something that just immediately demands your full attention, and lets you know that this isn't just some sort of run-of-the-mill quarter muncher.
Should I play Strikers 1945 before 1945 II, or should I just jump right into II?
Just PS4 here. The funny thing is that I put off buying it on the PS4 forever because I thought it was too expensive, but then when I eventually decided that I was going to buy it, I seriously considered picking up the much more pricey Saturn version. Collecting stuff makes my brain dumb.
