So, I thought this was pretty bad. Very thin plot connecting a bunch of action scenes that all went on for too long. Too many characters I didn't care about. Alden Ehrenreich as Han did not work for me. It felt like a Harrison impression and not him playing young Han. He tried to sound like him, and copy some of Harrisons mannerisms, such as the pointing, but it just didn't work for me. Donald Glover did a pretty good job as Lando, but he was underutilized. Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra was fine, but I never really cared about her as a character. Chewbacca was cool I guess. We got to see him move around more than we are used to. L3's plotline with freeing the droids added absolutely nothing. Still I didn't mind the character, especially when coupled with Lando. Woody Harrelson was great as always, if a bit predictable as a character. Paul Bettany wasn't in the movie. This movie just keeps going and going. There were three or four times when I thought the film was about to be over, and it just wouldn't stop. I had Return of the King flashbacks.
Why the fuck cant his name be Solo? Seriously, why? That scene made me facepalm so fucking hard. So I guess we have to refer to him as Han "Solo" now eh? References galore! Bossk? Check! Gangster on Tattooine? Check! Gold Dice? Check! Disguises? Check! Throwback to the Rancor scene? Check! Space Chess? Check! Teras Kasi? Uhh... check! Maul? Ok I wasn't expecting this one, and it was pretty cool, even though I don't understand why he's in THIS movie, but check! Oh yeah, this movie has all the references you want! Seriously though, I'm getting sick of the constant references being used as a crutch. The constant fan service/wankery is getting damn obnoxious.
The film feels aimless. It tries to pretend it's bigger than it really is. Instead of focusing on characters, the film is called Solo after all, it's more concerned with boring, overlong, confusing action scenes. No thanks. So what did we learn? We know Han had a father, we know how he got the name Solo, we know how he met Chewbacca and Lando, and we know how he got his Blaster. Yay?
