Every twin engined airliner is supposed to be able to maintain flight on a single engine before it is certified to be manufactured. Four engined airliners like the 747 and A380 are a dying breed.Twin engine? So those things can still fly with just one engine - impressive
Is it weird that stories like this make me feel safer about flying? These one in a million freak accidents happening and the plane still being able to land just fine.
Ya, but your chances of being partially sucked out at 460mph and 30,000 ft is significantly lower in a car.
This is what is called a "uncontained engine failure" And a fuckin huge one at that.
There will be heads rolling because of this.
The biggest thing about this whole incident was that control of the aircraft was not compromised in any way due to the debris from the engine failure.
How many car crash casualties do you know? Plane crash casualties?
I have two irrational fears. Heights and Spiders. I'm ok with avoiding both.Statistically speaking, fatal car crashes are significantly more common than plane crashes, even when normalized for the amount people take of each mode of transportation. You can think what you want, but that's the fact of the matter

I've not lost anyone I care about to either. I did serve on a jury following a plane crash. That was an awful experience. How many car crash casualties do you know? Plane crash casualties?
You are more likely to die in a car crash than for the engine of an airplane to blow up, open a window, and then suck you out. This was a freak occurrence.

They are lucky the components didn't hit any hydraulic lines or otherwise disturb the control surfaces. But as I said earlier uncontained engine failures are a big no no.

Why are you so intent on letting fearmongering slide?Hey guys, did you know you're more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash?
Yeah, it sucked. The photos of the crash scene and victims was down right horrifying. That does sound awful. I assume part of trial was determining monetary damage for amount of suffering passengers went through?
Indeed, that's what is concerning here.
The shrapnel had to go up and over the wing to smash that window. It should have been sucked out through the engine and away from the fuselage in the event of a failure. That's what the engine is designed to do and in most cases, does.
That it perhaps didn't do more damage to the fuselage than break the window, or didn't damage the wing if it blew out in front of it, is something to breathe a quick sigh of relief over.
This should make you want to fly more. An entire engine failed, broke a window, depressurized the cabin and THE PLANE STILL LANDED FINE.
Well I'm certainly MUUUUUUUCH more afraid of even the prospect of dying in a plane related accident than I am in a car related one. I'm just saying that, statistically, the latter is much more likely than the formerI have two irrational fears. Heights and Spiders. I'm ok with avoiding both.
It's also annoying to see the complete lack of understanding and acceptance of basic statistics and facts. You know what's worse than dying, listening to nerds way "well actually driving is significantly MORE dangerous than flying" everytime someone quips about flying.
Exactly.Oh good, this is definitely something I want to know happened.
This handwringing over safety stats for various modes of travel is pretty dumb considering thousands of people have to use planes, trains, and cars to function in their daily lives
Donald Trump's America
You'd be amazed at all the weird and outrageous circumstances that have struck commercial aviation over the years.
Did you know planes are way faster than cars? That's all the facts I need to know in order to keep flying over long distances instead of driving.Hey guys, did you know you're more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash?
Then car travel has some serious work to do to match the safety record of air travel. In what context? I agree the goal should be to make all of them equally safe.
You know what's worse than dying, listening to nerds way "well actually driving is significantly MORE dangerous than flying" everytime someone quips about flying.
Statistically speaking, yes.Because people who rely on statistical information are nerds. I see, I see.
Man, I'm going to have nightmares now, seriously. What accident was that ?You'd be amazed at all the weird and outrageous circumstances that have struck commercial aviation over the years.

Man I forgot how weird Brandon Routh looked in that movie. Who the hell thought those blue contacts were a good idea?

Doesn't matter. When your times up, your times upHoly shit that's nuts. Glad to hear the plane landed safely. Could've easily turned disastrous.
This also kinda validates my fear of sitting on or behind the wings. I always try to sit between the wings and the nose of the plane.
No, it's actually fearmongering. If BS about airplane safety leads to more people choosing to drive long distances vs fly, they are being exposed to excess risk of death or severe injury. Fearmongering can lead to well meaning but bad policy, which could lead to excess morbidity and morality. See https://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/when-good-intentions-make-bad-policy-car-seat-edition/Because it's not fearmongering (fuckin lol) and I don't work for the airplane lobby
I have an irrational fear of Hippos, I know that I'm more likely to die from NOT A HIPPO but that doesn't mean I wanna see one in a zoo
This statistical pedantry is boring as fuck and makes you all sound like lame ass fortune cookies tbh
I did. He looks beautiful.Man I forgot how weird Brandon Routh looked in that movie. Who the hell thought those blue contacts were a good idea?
There's a good chance she was unconscious. If you get partially sucked out of a plane, you have to rely on the strength and quick reaction of the other passengers to save you
O_O
