30 years ago this week, a father took control of a space station.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine | Season 4 - 7 | Opening - Intro HD

Over a thumb up and a subscription for our efforts, we would be very happy. But leave the bell quiet. ;-)

Definitely my favorite series, especially from S4 onwards. Way of the Warrior blew my mind back in the 90s.

The Klingons Attack DS9 (The Way of the Warrior)

The action scene as the Klingons attack and board the station. From Star Trek Deep Space Nine S4E1: The Way of the Warrior

Great Trek show, or the greatest Trek show?

If you had told kid me that DS9 would go on to have some of the best space battles in TV sci fi I never would have believed it.

Definitely the worst trek of that Era. It has some overall amazing individual episodes; but a terrible overarching story line.

So much Bajoran and Emissary boring blah blah stuff. But anything with the Cardassians was pretty on point. Even the Klingon stuff was pretty great.

So many skipable episodes.

DS9 perfected the Star Trek formula, I still feel the way it did episodic and serialised episodes/stories to be the perfect fit for Star Trek instead of leaning purely one way or another. TNG will always be my favourite crew, but DS9 will always be my favourite all-round Star Trek and story/events. Also every character in DS9 sees a lot of growth, even the minor characters

The main thing that in DS9 I didn't enjoy is all that weird Emissary/religious bullshit

It still sucks so much that we don't have DS9 remastered treatment like TNG

I've been watching it chronologically after only catching episodes here and there when it aired. I'm on season 4 so far and atm it's on par with TNG but firmly on its way to Goat status.

People can be critical of the overall story but it has the best cast of characters in any Star Trek series ever IMO.

Probably the second best Trek, Needed more variety imo, there were way too many Bajoran episodes and a lot of them felt like filler.

But it also had the best episode in the franchise:

It's probably still the greatest Trek. I say probably only because nostalgia makes me stan for TNG really hard. That said, DS9 also probably strikes the best balance between episodic and serialized stories. TV in general has focused to much on 1 season 1 story stuff for a while.

Just watched The Wire last night. Always got time for DS9. Except Move along home, that episode with rumple stiltskin and the one with Feral Molly.

Paramount will celebrate it by announcing more TNG and Voyager spin-offs.

As someone making his way through the whole franchise again, yeah, it really is the GOAT Trek series, closely followed by TNG

Although to be fair, TNG S5+S6 might be the strongest individual seasons of Trek

Top tier television, up there for me as one of the greatest shows of all time, for a long time I had tng as the best trek, but for the antics of quark to the mysterious garak, as I've got older and wiser, I've elevated ds9 to that position.

Only the expanse had come anywhere near it in the last 20 years of sci fi.

If only I could buy a 4k version.

My favourite Trek by far. I have greate memories of watching through this for the first time with my dad, who loved Trek but never watched DS9 before. The variety and depth of the characters really made the station feel like a real place. That said, I can't stand Vic. :P

I think it's equal to or a little better than TNG, and certainly the best Trek series ever made alongside TNG. They explored so many amazing themes and had such a rich cast of fantastic characters. And when they started partially serializing, it only got better. Just an incredible body of all-time classic episodes.

Gul Dukat is the all-time best Trek villain. Better than Khan or anyone else. And Weyoun is number 2.

I'm still salty that the Dominion War is barely ever mentioned in other Trek, even then usually only as part of some self-contained "We're doing DS9!" thing. Like it was something that only happened in the vicinity of the station. This was a war in which the Dominion got so far as to occupy Betazed and conduct a raid on Earth itself.

The way DS9 developed it's supporting cast is most definitely unparalleled in all of Trek history.

Like, you could just say Garak and it would already be the best at that, but then you got all the Ferengi (Rom, Nog, the Nagus, Brunt), you had General Martok, god fucking dammit you had Damar. I am still convinced Damar was never intended to be more than "that guy" who takes orders from Dukat when he was stationed to that freighter for some time.

Like, really, the only thing bringing DS9 down for me was all the emissary/prophet stuff. If they relied less heavily on that ...

Probably the highest ratio of hits to misses of any Star Trek show. Aside from some middling early episodes and a final season that goes too hard on the religious stuff, it's way more consistent than both TNG and VOY

This has been on my "I should really give this a try" list for years. I've watched the first episode or two a few times but it never really hooked me.

Watching Worf and Jadzia fighting like an old married couple on Risa right now. This episode is a dud, but man I love DS9!

Best Trek show by far.

It's my belief that DS9 has the best villain in all of Trek, Gul Dukat. Such a well written and well acted antagonist.

For me TNG is still probably the GOAT, but when DS9 hit on all cylinders it really is peak Sci-fi. It has great cast with nice character arcs as well as the overall story arc is good. Only down side is that there is a lot of bad filler. Some great gems in early seasons, but shit doesn't get great until Sisko goes bald.

One of the best. In great part by how it develops the ferengi to have some depth and undergo a feminist revolution that leads to socialism.

KIRA: The Butcher of Gallitep died six years ago. You're Aamin Marritza, his filing clerk.
MARRITZA: That's not true. I am alive. I'll always be alive. It's Marritza who's dead. Marritza, who was only good for cowering under his bunk and weeping like a woman. Who, every night, covered his ears because he couldn't bear to hear the screaming for mercy of the Bajorans.
(He breaks down in tears)
MARRITZA: I covered my ears every night. I couldn't bear to hear those horrible screams. You have no idea what it's like to be a coward, to see these horrors and do nothing. Marritza's dead. He deserves to be dead.
(Kira releases the cell forcefield)
MARRITZA: What are you doing?
KIRA: I'm letting you go.
MARRITZA: Security? Get in here!
KIRA: You didn't commit those crimes, and you couldn't stop them. You were only one man.
MARRITZA: No, don't you see? I have to be punished. We all have to be punished. Major, you have to go out and tell them I'm Gul Darhe'el. It's the only way.
KIRA: Why are you doing this?
MARRITZA: For Cardassia. Cardassia will only survive if it stands in front of Bajor and admits the truth. My trial will force Cardassia to acknowledge its guilt. And we're guilty, all of us. My death is necessary.
KIRA: What you're asking for is another murder. Enough good people have already died. I won't help kill another.

Duet still remains of the finest episodes of Star Trek and science fiction TV in general.

That is one of the best episodes in all of Trek, and is in my opinion the best "bottle episode" that Trek has produced. The writing and acting are phenomenal.

One of my favorite shows of all time. Did a rewatch last year and hopefully we'll get an AI visual upgrade in the near future for my next rewatch!

Deep Space Nine was one of those shows I watched when it originally aired, but since it wasn't TNG, I already had a built in bias against it. Thankfully, a few revisits later and it's a wonderful companion piece to TNG. While I think TNG as a whole was on average better, DS9 had some highs that not many things touch.

Finally started watching DS9 a few months ago and it's a bit of a drag. I can only imagine it's popularity is due to a lot of people liking incredibly boring space politics and war drama because I cannot stand any of this cardassia bayjor stuff. It's already bad enough that so much of the show takes place only on the station, AND that the actor for Sisko is wooden and lifeless (at least so far as of me being close to season 4).

Are there things I enjoy about it? Sure. The Odo having feels for the Major thing was cute, seeing Worf again is cool, the progressive-ish way they handle the concept of gender and sex via parasitic species was a surprise, and the general concept of the wormhole is fun but it isn't enough to make me consider it a series I'd watch again. TNG still takes the cake for me and even the original series is more enjoyable to me.

I fully support the idea of changing up the formula for what a Trek show can be though, but this one is just a miss for me. At this point I'm just speed running it so I can get to Picard before the taste of TNG (I just finished it again immediately before starting DS9) wears off.

The best Star Trek easily. And with any luck whatever schlock modern Trek comes up with will continue to leave it alone.

It's hard to capture just how soul destroying that scene is, where Marritza starts the sentence puffed up and ranting and slowly, slowly the stuttering and tears creep in, his voice breaking as he admits his "cowardice". Beautiful acting.

Plus this is the only real star trek to address racism, especially in "Far Beyond The Stars"
