I'm going to be rather annoyed if Shape of Water wins. It's the most overrated film of the year.
Call Me By Your Name and Get Out were much much better in my book.
I could not get into Shape of Water, particularly the first half of the film was overly long with sets that completely took me out of the movie and made me feel like I was watching a movie. Combine that with the ridiculously over the top dressed and styled scientists and it felt unbearably cheesy. I even thought Beauty and Beast was better than this which is a film of the same ilk.Im the opposite. I loved Shape of Water and found Get Out solid but overrated. Call Me By Your Name was a movie I can see all the merits but it left me cold same with Phantom Thread.
The Florida Project also needs way more nominations.
Is there anybody who genuinely believes Gary Oldman actually deserves to win Best Actor?
All the Best Actress nominees are worthy, but Frances was the favorite ever since Woody Harrelson's character shockingly coughed up blood and her tone shifted 180.
Chalamet puts in an all-timer performance and is losing to someone who needs to share his oscar with the make up department
I honestly think it should be Daniel Day Lewis's category alone.
The Post over Dunkirk?.. Hmmm. Also, my personal list of the movies (seen all BP nominees except Lady Bird :( )
1. Shape of Water
2. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
3. Call Me By Your Name
4. Phantom Thread
5. Ger Out
6. The Post
7. Dunkirk
8. Darkest Hour
Really, only film that would make me confused for winning is Darkest Hour, and that film was pretty great as well.
exquisite art.
The Post over Dunkirk?.. Hmmm.
My list, seen all but Darkest Hour.
1. Call Me By your Name
2. Get Out
3. Phantom Thread
4. Dunkirk
5. Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri
6. Shape of Water
7. Lady Bird
8. The Post
Darkest Hour just didn't appeal to me at all from the trailer so I passed.
It makes that deer scene all the more baffling, since Mildred has plenty of moments as it is when it comes to dropping her armor. That bit whenAll the Best Actress nominees are worthy, but Frances was the favorite ever since Woody Harrelson's character shockingly coughed up blood and her tone shifted 180.
It makes that deer scene all the more baffling, since Mildred has plenty of moments as it is when it comes to dropping her armor. That bit whenwas another great moment for Frances and her character. The deer scene felt like a studio note come to life.the billboards are burning and she bellows out Robbie's name like it's the last thing she can hold onto
"Can we have just one scene where Mildred is not being horrible to another person?"
"Gotcha, fam."
Agreed, Blade Runner is in my top five for best of the year.A truly phenomenal film with just unbelievable visuals.
it definitely looks like a quickly added scene, with that hilariously phony CG
That's what I figured it was, too. It's clearly a real deer, but wherever they shot it at had far too bright of lighting for what was going on in that scene, so it looked like it was radioactive.I'm pretty sure they confirmed it's a real deer. I think there's footage of it or an instagram somewhere.
Maybe on green screen tho?
I think he's deserved to win it for many roles over the last thirty years and he's one of the best actors of all time. Which is why it sucks that he's going to finally win for one of his lesser roles, and an excessively baity one too, and over more deserving ones this year.Is there anybody who genuinely believes Gary Oldman actually deserves to win Best Actor?
To be fair, The Shape of Water is the opposite of Oscar bait and it has the most noms this year, and is going to win a pile of them, including at least Best Director.Agreed, Blade Runner is in my top five for best of the year.A truly phenomenal film with just unbelievable visuals.
It's a bit of the shame some of the typical Oscar bait is getting more recognition than it considering Mad Max was recognized despite not being your typical "Oscar" film.
It's still crazy that this is only his second nomination ever. It's really hard for actors to cover up the "stink" of being a character actor in the opinion of the Academy, which is why he struggled so long to get any recognition from them.I think he's deserved to win it for many roles over the last thirty years and he's one of the best actors of all time. Which is why it sucks that he's going to finally win for one of his lesser roles, and an excessively baity one too, and over more deserving ones this year.
Why wasn't Florida Project nominated for best picture? Thought it more deserving than some movies in that list.
Dunkirk is a film that could only be a film, it couldn't be a book, a play, a TV show, a comic or a video game, and in that regard Nolan does deserve a win. However, I can't fault del Toro getting it, he's a superb director and he has been ignored for his talents for years and years. If we are talking about pure direction of a film. Shouldn't Dunkirk win? Really, I'm not even kidding.
It truly is one of the best *directed* films I have ever seen.
I don't know why the general consensus has gone cold on this movie all the sudden considering the ravenous reviews upon release.
Neither of those have any hope in hell of winning. Like they're number 8 and 9 on the rankings of chances to win respectively.Imo Darkest Hour or The Post gonna win Best Picture because they deserve it the least but hey they have Gary Oldman in a fat suit or just Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.
I actually enjoyed her performance in Brooklyn moreso. Now that Oldman is finally getting his Oscar, and others like Leo got theirs recently, who else remains as a long time bridesmaid at the Oscars?
I can think of Amy Adams off the top of my head, she's been nominated five times over the last decade and never won, despite her immense talent. I have a bad feeling Saoirse Ronan may wind up here for a while as even though she's starting to be regularly nominated the stars don't seem to align for her to be frontrunner by Oscar time.
That doesn't make any sense, lol.Dunkirk is a film that could only be a film, it couldn't be a book, a play, a TV show, a comic or a video game, and in that regard Nolan does deserve a win.
Me.Is there anybody who genuinely believes Gary Oldman actually deserves to win Best Actor?
I hope Guillermo and TSOW will make it big and it leads to some exec being crazy enough to fund big budget At the Mountains of Madness adaptation which eventually leads to steady stream of properly produced Lovecraft movies.
The only huge budget film he's done is Pacific Rim and that was eight years after Pan's Labyrinth. He got that after Pan's. All it did was produce large budget films squeaking by...at best
Define huge, Hellboy 2 was 85mil and the first didn't perform hot. Pacific Rim scrap by with intentional gross and they solely green-lit the sequel due to the booming international market, and Crimson Peak was 55mil for a Horror film. That's an expensive ass horror film. The only huge budget film he's done is Pacific Rim and that was eight years after Pan's Labyrinth.
