Team composition
With one of the largest playable casts in the entire Trails series, you'll have no shortage of party compositions to try out in Trails of Cold Steel II. It can get a little overwhelming at times, so here are some tips for forming the perfect party.
- Have a plan and create your party accordingly. Are you clearing out dangerous mobs? Try taking some status effects and high-damage party members. Are you fighting a war of attrition against a high-HP boss? Get some tanks and sustainable healing.
- Buffs are the key to winning tough fights in CS2. They're almost mandatory on higher difficulties, so it's always worth taking along someone specced for buffing, even if they're in the reserve party.
- Party formation is important. Keeping your characters bunched up together makes it easy to buff them all, but it also makes them susceptible to AoE attacks.
- Generally, a strong party should be flexible and respond well to a variety of threats. Here's a sample party using Class VII members:
Active:
Rean - Delay
Sara - S-Craft damage (bosses) + delay
Jusis - Buffs
Alisa - CP recovery, Healing
Reserve:
Emma - AoE arts damage for clearing mobs
Fie - Dodge tanking
Rean - Delay
Sara - S-Craft damage (bosses) + delay
Jusis - Buffs
Alisa - CP recovery, Healing
Reserve:
Emma - AoE arts damage for clearing mobs
Fie - Dodge tanking
Insights
- For ARCUS configurations, some people like to stack stats as high as they can, while others prefer to be more well-balanced. Stacking works well in boss battles, but experimentation is key here: use whatever works for you.
- Detection quartz is a must if you want to open every chest!
- Everyone's a little more inaccurate in CS2. Consider equipping a Hit quartz or buffing with Insight if you're missing a lot.
- Speaking of Insight, it's low-key one of the best status effects in the game. With +50% accuracy, +50% evasion (!), and +10% unbalance, it's a great way to get free counters and link attacks.
- Ever have a zero-arts turn bonus pop up on a physical attacker's turn? Try using a buff art instead of letting the bonus go to waste.
- If you're struggling against a tough opponent and haven't saved in a while, don't panic! There's an autosave. Sometimes adjusting your equipment can make a huge difference. (Thanks, Lozange)
- Until the Bank of Rean collects its interest, you'll probably find that you don't have enough Mira to buy equipment for everybody. Always buy weapons for your best, most-used characters first. If you feel like they're dying too quickly, go ahead and buy them armor as well. Characters on the bench can live with hand-me-downs until you're forced to use them.
- Contrary to popular belief, Laura does not have the highest S-Craft damage potential within Class VII. Assuming relative parity, Millium has the same strength as Laura and has a more powerful S-Craft (4S vs. SSS+). Sara has a little less strength than either, but still outclasses Laura with a 4S S-Craft. Emma's S-Craft is also very powerful, and its effectiveness depends on its targets' ADF. In short, for pure S-Craft damage, Millium > Sara > Laura. Emma is also really good. (Thanks, Gu4n)
- In longer fights, always keep an eye on your buffs. Buffs are stackable and have two levels: the first level (indicated by a yellow arrow) is a 25% stat bonus; the second level (red arrow) is a 50% bonus. In general, it's always a good idea to fully buff everyone with Speed and their attack type (Strength for physical attackers, ATS for arts users). Jusis' Noble Command covers all three of those buffs!
- A 200CP S-Craft does 50% more damage than a 100-199 CP S-Craft.
Character Evaluations
Each character in Trails of Cold Steel II is different, with unique crafts, Orbments, and stat spreads. Specialization is the name of game here: each party member is flexible enough to perform well in a number of roles, but they each have at least one niche in which they truly excel.
Rean Schwarzer
Role: Delayer, Physical damage, Mecha pilot
Rean is a blindingly-fast physical attacker with some fantastic crafts. Motivate is a great early-game buff, and Arc Slash is hands-down the best delaying craft in the game. Later in the game, he gets even more options that greatly increase his capacity to do damage. Rean will almost always be in your party due to plot, but he certainly pulls his weight and then some
Alisa Reinford
Role: CP battery, Off-healer
Alisa's stats aren't terribly impressive, but she more than makes up for it with her support potential. Blessed Arrow and Heavenly Gift are two powerful AoE crafts: the former heals and restores 40 CP to every ally in range; Heavenly Gift grants Insight and CP regeneration. Alisa is the perfect CP battery, making sure that her allies can always perform to their fullest.
Novel Mike said: "Alisa also has the third highest ATS stat after Emma and Elliot making her a rather powerful arts caster when you don't need her CP regaining abilities. Furthermore, her Master Quartz Angel has the ability to automatically recover Alisa from K.O. which while certainly can be useful on other people as well it hits her usefulness perfectly as it revives her and gives her CP upon revival as well so she can continue as a CP battery, healer, or just dishing out arts damage."
Elliot Craig
Role: Support, Crowd control
Poor Elliot, always overshadowed by Emma. Elliot's actually a very balanced arts user: he's got a little less ATS than Emma but has one of the best speed stats of all ATS-users. What makes Elliot really stand out, though, are his crafts. Everyone remembers Resounding Beat's HP regen from CS1, and it's just as useful in this game. Holy Song is another great defensive craft, while Nocturne Bell is a fantastic crowd control tool that inflicts Nightmare. And Elliot's no slouch at arts, either, able to cast them faster than Emma. Elliot a versatile arts user with a fantastic support abilities.
Laura S. Arseid
Role: Physical damage
Laura has a big sword and hits things with it. All of her crafts let her hit things harder than usual. She has really high strength, which lets her hit really really hard. Look, you already know how to use her.
Jusis Albarea
Role: Buffer
Jusis' Noble Command is quite possibly the best support craft in the game. It buffs each offensive stat (strength, arts attack, and speed) for all allies in a pretty large area, allowing the rest of the team to focus on other tasks. Make sure to cast Noble Command twice - it stacks. Platinum Shield is another outstanding craft that grants an ally physical immunity. Jusis has fairly high stats all-around but doesn't really excel in any of them. He does deals good physical and arts damage, but he won't outpace Rean or Emma in their respective areas. However, he's more than capable of filling a gap and tacking on more damage when he's not buffing. Jusis' Noble Command makes him an extremely valuable pick, especially for boss fights.
Machias Regnitz
Role: Support, Crowd control
Machias' specialty is his status effects. With an AoE regular attack and a large AoE petrify craft, this shotgun user can wreak havoc on large enemy formations. He also gains some great support crafts: Energy Shell can keep your arts users in the fight, while Burst Drive makes all allies in a medium area immediately actionable. Burst Drive can be combined with allies' high-delay moves (like S-Crafts) to ensure that you can have high damage without the wait. Machias is always a useful asset when fighting large groups of mobs, and can be a great situational character in a predefined strategy.
Fie Claussell
Role: Dodge tank, Delayer
With the highest speed and agility of the entire cast, Fie can pepper her enemies with attacks while dodging anything that comes her way. In Cold Steel 2, her counter range is also greatly increased, further increasing her ability to do damage. Fie is most comfortable at the front of the party or in the midst of a pack of enemies, where she can use her fantastic AoE crafts to impede or delay them. Fie benefits almost any party composition that can take her. She might need a sweater for the chilly Erebonian winters, though.
Emma Millstein
Role: Arts damage
While Elliot specializes in survivability and support, Emma is all about raw arts damage. If you can adequately protect her she can single-handedly wipe entire packs of mobs or provide sustained damage against a boss. While Emma's crafts don't have the raw supportive power of Elliot's, Serene Blessing is a good healing move in a pinch and Crescent Shell is a great preventative move that increases defense and adds Magic Reflect. If you need some arts damage in your life, Emma is your girl.
PK Gaming said: "I honestly think Emma's supporting ability is greater than Elliot's. Being able to no-sell arts damage is... huge. She is directly responsible for letting you beat some of the earlygame superbosses, makes getting some of the AP bonuses far easier when she's available and she has infinite range revive AND CP boost, which instantly gets someone back on their feet. She is without question, the best supporting character in the game and easily in the top 3 for characters overall."
Gaius Worzel
Role: Status effects, damage
Gaius makes for a fantastic frontline fighter, with good natural evade, well-balanced physical stats, and powerful crafts. Gaius has fantastic AoE crafts that add useful status effects and can use Wild Rage if he's ever low on CP. While he lacks the raw destructive power of characters like Laura or Millium, he certainly makes up for it in his overall utility.
Millium Orion
Role: Tanking, Physical damage
Millium is a simple character: with high strength, HP, and defense, she can take damage, and she can deal damage. Millium's crafts are no slouch, either. Ultimate Barrier is cheap and completely nullifies one physical attack; Buster Arm and Megaton Press are great physical moves (the latter has procs for faint, delay, and unbalance!). Her second S-Craft, Galactic Cannon, is one of the very few 4S Class attacks available to Class VII. A great choice if you need some brute force.
Sara Valestein
Role: Delayer, Physical damage
Sara is a truly well-rounded character. With high strength and speed, she can spam attacks and crafts (especially Flash, which deals heavy damage and adds delay and seal in a large area). Her self-buff increases her strength grants Insight, allowing her to act as a self-sufficient dodge tank even without the right equipment. On top of that, Sara's S-Crafts are among the strongest in the game, letting her easily compete with Laura in that arena. Sara is a fantastically versatile character. A jack-of-all-trades, master of some.
