Team composition

With one of the largest playable casts in the entire Trails series, you'll have no shortage of party compositions to try out in Trails of Cold Steel II. It can get a little overwhelming at times, so here are some tips for forming the perfect party.
  • Have a plan and create your party accordingly. Are you clearing out dangerous mobs? Try taking some status effects and high-damage party members. Are you fighting a war of attrition against a high-HP boss? Get some tanks and sustainable healing.
  • Buffs are the key to winning tough fights in CS2. They're almost mandatory on higher difficulties, so it's always worth taking along someone specced for buffing, even if they're in the reserve party.
  • Party formation is important. Keeping your characters bunched up together makes it easy to buff them all, but it also makes them susceptible to AoE attacks.
  • Generally, a strong party should be flexible and respond well to a variety of threats. Here's a sample party using Class VII members:
Active:
Rean - Delay
Sara - S-Craft damage (bosses) + delay
Jusis - Buffs
Alisa - CP recovery, Healing

Reserve:
Emma - AoE arts damage for clearing mobs
Fie - Dodge tanking

Insights
  1. For ARCUS configurations, some people like to stack stats as high as they can, while others prefer to be more well-balanced. Stacking works well in boss battles, but experimentation is key here: use whatever works for you.
  2. Detection quartz is a must if you want to open every chest!
  3. Everyone's a little more inaccurate in CS2. Consider equipping a Hit quartz or buffing with Insight if you're missing a lot.
  4. Speaking of Insight, it's low-key one of the best status effects in the game. With +50% accuracy, +50% evasion (!), and +10% unbalance, it's a great way to get free counters and link attacks.
  5. Ever have a zero-arts turn bonus pop up on a physical attacker's turn? Try using a buff art instead of letting the bonus go to waste.
  6. If you're struggling against a tough opponent and haven't saved in a while, don't panic! There's an autosave. Sometimes adjusting your equipment can make a huge difference. (Thanks, Lozange)
  7. Until the Bank of Rean collects its interest, you'll probably find that you don't have enough Mira to buy equipment for everybody. Always buy weapons for your best, most-used characters first. If you feel like they're dying too quickly, go ahead and buy them armor as well. Characters on the bench can live with hand-me-downs until you're forced to use them.
  8. Contrary to popular belief, Laura does not have the highest S-Craft damage potential within Class VII. Assuming relative parity, Millium has the same strength as Laura and has a more powerful S-Craft (4S vs. SSS+). Sara has a little less strength than either, but still outclasses Laura with a 4S S-Craft. Emma's S-Craft is also very powerful, and its effectiveness depends on its targets' ADF. In short, for pure S-Craft damage, Millium > Sara > Laura. Emma is also really good. (Thanks, Gu4n)
  9. In longer fights, always keep an eye on your buffs. Buffs are stackable and have two levels: the first level (indicated by a yellow arrow) is a 25% stat bonus; the second level (red arrow) is a 50% bonus. In general, it's always a good idea to fully buff everyone with Speed and their attack type (Strength for physical attackers, ATS for arts users). Jusis' Noble Command covers all three of those buffs!
  10. A 200CP S-Craft does 50% more damage than a 100-199 CP S-Craft.

Character Evaluations

Each character in Trails of Cold Steel II is different, with unique crafts, Orbments, and stat spreads. Specialization is the name of game here: each party member is flexible enough to perform well in a number of roles, but they each have at least one niche in which they truly excel.

Rean Schwarzer
Role: Delayer, Physical damage, Mecha pilot
Rean is a blindingly-fast physical attacker with some fantastic crafts. Motivate is a great early-game buff, and Arc Slash is hands-down the best delaying craft in the game. Later in the game, he gets even more options that greatly increase his capacity to do damage. Rean will almost always be in your party due to plot, but he certainly pulls his weight and then some

Alisa Reinford
Role: CP battery, Off-healer
Alisa's stats aren't terribly impressive, but she more than makes up for it with her support potential. Blessed Arrow and Heavenly Gift are two powerful AoE crafts: the former heals and restores 40 CP to every ally in range; Heavenly Gift grants Insight and CP regeneration. Alisa is the perfect CP battery, making sure that her allies can always perform to their fullest.

Novel Mike said: "Alisa also has the third highest ATS stat after Emma and Elliot making her a rather powerful arts caster when you don't need her CP regaining abilities. Furthermore, her Master Quartz Angel has the ability to automatically recover Alisa from K.O. which while certainly can be useful on other people as well it hits her usefulness perfectly as it revives her and gives her CP upon revival as well so she can continue as a CP battery, healer, or just dishing out arts damage."

Elliot Craig
Role: Support, Crowd control
Poor Elliot, always overshadowed by Emma. Elliot's actually a very balanced arts user: he's got a little less ATS than Emma but has one of the best speed stats of all ATS-users. What makes Elliot really stand out, though, are his crafts. Everyone remembers Resounding Beat's HP regen from CS1, and it's just as useful in this game. Holy Song is another great defensive craft, while Nocturne Bell is a fantastic crowd control tool that inflicts Nightmare. And Elliot's no slouch at arts, either, able to cast them faster than Emma. Elliot a versatile arts user with a fantastic support abilities.

Laura S. Arseid
Role: Physical damage
Laura has a big sword and hits things with it. All of her crafts let her hit things harder than usual. She has really high strength, which lets her hit really really hard. Look, you already know how to use her.

Jusis Albarea
Role: Buffer
Jusis' Noble Command is quite possibly the best support craft in the game. It buffs each offensive stat (strength, arts attack, and speed) for all allies in a pretty large area, allowing the rest of the team to focus on other tasks. Make sure to cast Noble Command twice - it stacks. Platinum Shield is another outstanding craft that grants an ally physical immunity. Jusis has fairly high stats all-around but doesn't really excel in any of them. He does deals good physical and arts damage, but he won't outpace Rean or Emma in their respective areas. However, he's more than capable of filling a gap and tacking on more damage when he's not buffing. Jusis' Noble Command makes him an extremely valuable pick, especially for boss fights.

Machias Regnitz
Role: Support, Crowd control
Machias' specialty is his status effects. With an AoE regular attack and a large AoE petrify craft, this shotgun user can wreak havoc on large enemy formations. He also gains some great support crafts: Energy Shell can keep your arts users in the fight, while Burst Drive makes all allies in a medium area immediately actionable. Burst Drive can be combined with allies' high-delay moves (like S-Crafts) to ensure that you can have high damage without the wait. Machias is always a useful asset when fighting large groups of mobs, and can be a great situational character in a predefined strategy.

Fie Claussell
Role: Dodge tank, Delayer
With the highest speed and agility of the entire cast, Fie can pepper her enemies with attacks while dodging anything that comes her way. In Cold Steel 2, her counter range is also greatly increased, further increasing her ability to do damage. Fie is most comfortable at the front of the party or in the midst of a pack of enemies, where she can use her fantastic AoE crafts to impede or delay them. Fie benefits almost any party composition that can take her. She might need a sweater for the chilly Erebonian winters, though.

Emma Millstein
Role: Arts damage
While Elliot specializes in survivability and support, Emma is all about raw arts damage. If you can adequately protect her she can single-handedly wipe entire packs of mobs or provide sustained damage against a boss. While Emma's crafts don't have the raw supportive power of Elliot's, Serene Blessing is a good healing move in a pinch and Crescent Shell is a great preventative move that increases defense and adds Magic Reflect. If you need some arts damage in your life, Emma is your girl.

PK Gaming said: "I honestly think Emma's supporting ability is greater than Elliot's. Being able to no-sell arts damage is... huge. She is directly responsible for letting you beat some of the earlygame superbosses, makes getting some of the AP bonuses far easier when she's available and she has infinite range revive AND CP boost, which instantly gets someone back on their feet. She is without question, the best supporting character in the game and easily in the top 3 for characters overall."

Gaius Worzel
Role: Status effects, damage
Gaius makes for a fantastic frontline fighter, with good natural evade, well-balanced physical stats, and powerful crafts. Gaius has fantastic AoE crafts that add useful status effects and can use Wild Rage if he's ever low on CP. While he lacks the raw destructive power of characters like Laura or Millium, he certainly makes up for it in his overall utility.

Millium Orion
Role: Tanking, Physical damage
Millium is a simple character: with high strength, HP, and defense, she can take damage, and she can deal damage. Millium's crafts are no slouch, either. Ultimate Barrier is cheap and completely nullifies one physical attack; Buster Arm and Megaton Press are great physical moves (the latter has procs for faint, delay, and unbalance!). Her second S-Craft, Galactic Cannon, is one of the very few 4S Class attacks available to Class VII. A great choice if you need some brute force.

Sara Valestein
Role: Delayer, Physical damage
Sara is a truly well-rounded character. With high strength and speed, she can spam attacks and crafts (especially Flash, which deals heavy damage and adds delay and seal in a large area). Her self-buff increases her strength grants Insight, allowing her to act as a self-sufficient dodge tank even without the right equipment. On top of that, Sara's S-Crafts are among the strongest in the game, letting her easily compete with Laura in that arena. Sara is a fantastically versatile character. A jack-of-all-trades, master of some.

1. I've played Trails of Cold Steel to completion. Should I play Trails in the Sky series first before starting Trails of Cold Steel II?

Personally, I strongly recommend everyone to play and finish the Trails in the Sky trilogy before even starting Trails of Cold Steel. In one of the Trails in the Sky games, there are very important events which will be directly referenced to in Trails of Cold Steel II. Furthermore, there are a few characters from Trails in the Sky series who will reappear in Trails of Cold Steel II. However, keep in mind that there are significant time investment which must be made if you intend to complete the three games in its entirety. Here is the estimated average time to complete the trilogy:

    • Trails in the Sky FC: 50 hours

    • Trails in the Sky SC: 75 hours

    • Trails in the Sky the 3rd: 50 hours
Please note that the estimated time above didn't allow for 100% completion, and based on pre-turbo mode implementation completion time.

2. Do I absolutely have to play Trails of Cold Steel first?

Not only you have to play the first game, but you'll absolutely have to finish it. Trails of Cold Steel II will pick up almost immediately after the event at the end of Trails of Cold Steel.

3. Is there anything else I should do before playing this game?

Class VII's trip to Ymir in the first game is only quickly summarized, but quite a few things actually happened during this time. Falcom released a drama CD that details those events and an official translation is available here. It's highly recommended reading as the events in the drama CD are canon and Cold Steel 2 expects the player to know them.

4. Does this game has dual audio?

Unfortunately, Trails of Cold Steel II does not have dual audio. The spoken language is English only. However, the game will allow you to play with Japanese text.

5. What is the carryover items from Trails of Cold Steel clear save data?

The following items are carried over from the first game:

I. Character Level. Rean won't start with the same level where he was at the end of the first game, but instead, his character level will determine the rewards gained at the start of the second game:

a. Level 69 or under, Rean will receive 100 of each type of Sepith, a Zeram Powder, and an Attack 1 Quartz.

b. Level 70 to 79, Rean will receive 300 of each type of Sepith, a Zeram Powder, an Attack 1 Quartz, and a Soul Blur Quartz.

c. Level 80 and above, Rean will receive 500 of each type of Sepith, a Zeram Powder, an Attack 1 Quartz, a Soul Blur Quartz, and a Saintly Force Quartz.

II. Academic Rank. Completing Trails of Cold Steel with either Rank A1 or A0 will award Rean a certain accessory.

a. Rank A1, Rean will receive the Silver Emblem accessory with the following stats: HP +500 and EP +50

b. Rank A0, Rean will receive the Golden Emblem accessory with the following stats: HP +1000, EP +100, and STR/DEF/ATS/ADF +10

III. Additional NPC dialogue. Completing certain quests from a number of NPC will trigger additional dialogues. Since Trails of Cold Steel contains a number of hidden quests, it is imperative to talk to every NPC at least twice if you don't want to miss any of these dialogues.

IV. Chosen dance partner from school festival bonfire. There will be additional dialogue with any characters Rean had the option to dance in the Trails of Cold Steel. Furthermore, the character you choose to dance with Rean will earn additional Link Exp.

V. Costume DLC. Any purchased casual clothes DLC from Trails of Cold Steel will carry over into Trails of Cold Steel II.

6. What difficulty do you recommend to start with for Novice/Veteran of the series?

The Hard difficulty is the recommended difficulty for both novice and veteran of the series. This is due to the how the current game mechanics implementation can be exploited with relative ease which will result in a very little challenge for both Easy and Normal difficulty.

7. Are there any missable quests in this game?

There are indeed a few missable quests in the game, almost every chapter will contain at least one or more missable quest. Make sure to have Rean interact with NPCs at least twice at the earliest opportunity.

8. I lost my clear save from Trails of Cold Steel. Can anyone help?

Each of the links below contains a Clear Save Data with Rean's chosen dance partner during the school festival bonfire event (See question #4, item IV.). All these files has Rean at Character Level 99, which should earn you the best possible starting reward (See question #4, item Ic.).

You will need to copy the savegame(s) into the Trails of Cold Steel savegame directory (%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Falcom\ed8). Simply copy the path into the location bar of Windows File Explorer to go directly there, and move/copy the savegames from the zip file into the directory.

9. Why are people are asking for Trails of Cold Steel II Clear Save Data?

Without going into too much detail, there is certain content in the game which is only accessible when a new game is started by loading a Trails of Cold Steel II Clear Save Data.

Currently, there are both "proper" Clear Save Data, and a "hacked" Clear Save Data.

The "proper" clear save data is a true Clear Save Data from a completed run. Since this clear save is only the first run, there are only 5 points available to distribute. This save is provided by speedrunner ChampionBeef, via Tonton. You can download the Clear Save Data here. Keep in mind that the clear save data is still pretty much empty (The Character, Recipe, Fishing and Books tab inside the Notebook were left unfilled) since this is after all, a speedrun clear save.

The "hacked" Clear save has a few certain caveats:

    • Character Levels, Link Levels, Slot Levels, Overdrive etc. are the same as in the beginning of the game.

    • No items of value. This includes Mira and Sepith.

    • Notebook Data can't be carried over safely without a glitch.
The only notable advantages of this clear save (apart from unlocking the aforementioned content) is that it provides bonus items in the form of optional outfits, 300K Mira, 3K Sepith and Maximum Bonding Points. If you would like to use this save to start a new game, be careful not to select the Notebook Data to carry over. You can download the Clear Save here: Link 1 (Mega), Link 2 (Dropbox). Analysis courtesy of Brood_Star (original post)

10. These bonding points are too few. I want to spend time with everyone! How can I do this?

If you're not interested in using either of the Trails of Cold Steel II Clear Save Data provided in Question #9 (Since it will carry over Max Bonding Points as one of its bonuses), as an alternative solution DrummerIX of Fearless Cheat Engine forum has created a Cheat Engine Table for Trails of Cold Steel II which allows one to increase bonding points and/or increase its maximum. You can download it from here. Be aware that the CT file allows for modifying a multitude of game parameters which may break the game. If you just want to modify the bonding points only, this screenshot should tell you exactly what to enable in the CT.

11. Are there any mods out there for Trails of Cold Steel II?

Bighead, the author of ToCS HD Texture Pack mod has updated hisToCS II HD Texture Pack mod to version 4.35 (17 March 2018). This texture mod consists of mostly HD UI textures which will sharpen the appearance of most UI elements in the camp menu and notebook. You can see a sample of the retextured assets here. To see the mod in action, you can see a few screenshots (Courtesy of Bighead) here. Thanks to Durante, we won't need a texture injection method to apply this new version of the mod some of the modded textures has been packed into PKG to prevent crashes:
Bighead said:
A huge shout out and thanks to Durante, he has made a patch so that these textures will work with the game. It is required to update to v1.2 before using this patch. The new textures do not use SpecialK, and are packed directly into PKG files. They are included with the texture mod, so the installation is a bit different now but not by much. For now, this patched exe will be needed to use the new textures. But if you don't trust a random exe, you can wait until v1.3 launches which will contain the changes that allow these textures to load. After v1.3 is released, this patch will no longer be needed.

Please be aware that you will need to remove the older version of the mod from SpecialK's injection directory before installing the new version of the mod.

Patch 1.2 (3 March 2018)

Complete Patch Notes for Version 1.2

  • Various optimizations to loading speed and caching.
  • Fix memory allocation ordering issues, eliminating some types of crashes occuring on some sytems.
  • Permanently cache battle UI images to improve battle loading speed and prevent some rendering issues.

  • Pillar box shop menus when playing in ultra widescreen.
  • Added 120 FPS and 240 FPS frame limiter options.
  • Added experimental HD font option.

Experimental Options
This update introduces two experimental options that can be enabled by command line options. Note that these are experimental for a reason - we want to provide them to you if you are interested, but they are not fully tested throughout the entire game.

  • -hdfont : This option enables a high definition font. It is natively designed for 4x the resolution of the default font. This will be especially useful in combination with the QHD UI mod. See here for a comparison.[screenshotcomparison.com]
  • -largecache : Increases the size of the cache, which should make the loading time optimizations even more effective in longer sessions and reduce the number of instances of longer cache-clearing load times.

Release Thread [Steam Community]

Durante has this little tidbit about the experimental HD font:
The font engine is entirely custom-made by Falcom, and its not really easy to understand (let alone modify) -- that's the reason I didn't have any higher res font support in ToCS1 or at launch in ToCS2, even though I've wanted to do (albeit at lower priority) it since the start. So I don't think that's something I'll be able to invest the time to look at. (Especially since it seems like there are still crashes on some systems, which I really had hoped would be almost completely resolved with 1.2 :/)
That said, something which is rather easy to do now is offering a font alternative.
Here's one based on the original font: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5v4fps6wal3zeal/font_us_hd2.itf?dl=0 (you need to replace "font_us_hd.itf" in "data/fonts" with it, and it will replace what is used if you supply the -hdfont parameter). Screenshot

If Hard Mode is as 'hard' as it was in ToCS1, I'd rather suggest everyone start on Nightmare.
CS1 (barring 2 boss fights) was just braindead easy on Hard.

I somehow found CS2 to be even easier than the first game (although maybe that's just from already having experience from the first game).

And yeah, it's a very easy game, so anyone who wants even a little bit of challenge should play it on Nightmare.

And as a bonus, CS2 doesn't have any bullshit fights where winning essentially depends just on your level and luck
which was the case for the final fight in CS1 where even optimal strategy could still fail if you were underleveled

Really beautiful OT!

Regarding costume DLC: ToCS1 costume DLC carries over, and you also get two TitS costumes if you own any of the TitS games.

Edit: oh, and the "recommended" specs changed, probably after you made the image for the OP. We now recommend 6 GB RAM, since you might actually start swapping in a few parts of the game with 4 GB if you play at high-end settings and have a browser or something else open in the background.

I like how the text in this thread is old people sized.
Agreed!

If Hard Mode is as 'hard' as it was in ToCS1, I'd rather suggest everyone start on Nightmare.

I thought "Hard" was actually not all that simple in ToCS2. Some enemies hit really hard.

Of course, you have a ton of tactical options and resources you can use. I really appreciate what they did with the battle system in this, it might make it into my top 5 JRPG battle systems.

That's a sick OT, amazing effort!

I have very, very high expectations for CSII and I hope it won't disappoint.

Thanks for the heads up! I sent an updated image, so it should be up now/soon. :)

Incredible, OT. Great work Kvik. Funny how my little pun won out, guess one should never underestimate the power of memes.

Looking forward to the game, and at least playing around the first area. Won't be actually playing this and CS1 until I have caught up with the Crossbell arc, but that's my choice. Going from the Sky games to this should also be great way of experiencing the story, certainly.

Nice OT, but the definition of Mobile Unfriendly, eh?

Anyway, frantically reinstalling Cold Steel 1 on my new PC to see if Steam Cloud preserved my Clear saves. In a bit of a panic since it reads "0 Bytes Stored" on the Cloud tab, but then again a bunch of other games that I know Steam Cloud does work on also are reading that so it might be bugged or referring to local save files.

Very awesome OT! Trails has one of the best aesthetics out there.

Definitely tempted to pick it up tomorrow, but I dunno if I'll be able to do the save transfer? I played the first on my Vita and I'd rather not buy the entire game again just to change the save file to get the dance partner I had there (Fie). I like Laura 'n all but would be nice to have it be consistent.

If anyone can upload a Fie save file I'll mock-up Jean-Luc Pikkard especially for you.

Of course if it won't let me create a fake save folder I guess I'm out of luck anyway.

Of course you can fake the save easily! And of course I have a Fie save file! Fie > all after all.

Just let me find it.

Great, great thread.

Thanks for the link to the save, I completed Trails of Cold Steel on PS3, then started CS2 somewhat, but will buy it on PC. Didn't want to go through the whole game again just to have a save ... and I'm waaaay to OCD to start 2 withtout a save game from one.

You saved me from a big dilemma.

This time last year, FC was the only game I played. Now I've finished SC, 3rd, and CS1. I'm ready to get CS2. Going to be weird finally catching up to the official localized releases.

Really looking forward to this, loved the first one

Surely this is the game where my theory of Neithardt being evil is proved correct :P

Felt bad that you couldn't romance the guys in CS1 (you could befriend them, but not, you know, dance), did that change in CS2?

I'm giving up on the series, I can get myself the time to finish in the sky, let alone play cold Steel without feeling that I'm skipping in the sky.

I feel like I discovered the series way too late, now I don't really want to play only 1 series just to keep up

Anyway, YES, Steam Cloud did indeed save my clear file. God that felt like a close shave there.

Hold on a moment though, my Dance partner was Crow. You can totally go for Yaoi options.

Amazing title and OT, had a feeling this one was gonna win lol. Just cleaned up my playthrough of Umineko's Question Arc so I'll definitely give this another playthrough when it drops tomorrow!

Bruh it's not like the series is going anywhere or there's a time limit to play it. Not to sound like that "you should play the games this way" person, but trying to speed through the games to catch up on the franchise/lore is the exact opposite experience that you should have with these games imo. Take them on at your own pace and enjoy them all individually. The games will still be here regardless of whether you finish them now or 5 years from now.

If you're worried about the community moving on, then don't be. Trails in the Sky FC and SC came out several years ago, but the community still actively talks about those games like they just came out a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, Lately I have moved on that mentality of finishing everything, I should try to find some time.

I also have the problem that every single time that I retake in the sky something stupid happens, like this sunday I was playing perfectly, but I forgot to put the charger on my notebook, the low battery message poped up and the game closed up without warning. I don't know why this game crashes so frequently

Rotobit here you go:

You need to extract it to "%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\FALCOM\ed8"

Awesome, thanks so much! Will definitely grab the game ASAP then.

And as promised, here's Jean Luc's Pikkard.

We've actually provided a couple of savegames in the FAQ section of the OT. One of them is an NG+ Level 99 Clear Save courtesy of Ascheroth

No, it's a thread composed almost entirely of high-res images that absolutely pummel 4G bandwidth.

I see. We spared no expense as you see, since Trails is a special series for most of us :-)
