Starfield runs at 30 frames per second on both Xbox Series X and S, Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed.

Speaking to IGN in a new interview ahead of the Xbox and Starfield showcases, Howard said Starfield runs in 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X and 1440p on the Xbox Series S, but has locked Starfield at 30fps on console to ensure "consistency" of performance.

"I think it'll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for," Howard said. "Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen. And we do want to do that. It's 4K in the X. It's 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don't want to sacrifice any of it.

"Fortunately in this one, we've got it running great. It's often running way above that. Sometimes it's 60. But on the consoles, we do lock it because we prefer the consistency, where you're not even thinking about it.

Hopefully it will have a performance unlocked mode, for the people with VRR displays or that don't mind the sub-60 judder.

Native 4k/30 seems good for this massive game

I'm afraid of my 9900k/3080 machine even being able to put out 1440p (ultrawide)/60 consistently with this

Also, you know, it's a BGS game at launch

I figured as much. I'll be playing on PC.
I'm sure it will still be a great experience on consoles.

as i mentioned before

you might not get 60fps on PC either. this game likely crushes the CPU hard.

Not surprising at all. There's no way you could have watched the showcase and think that would be 60fps on consoles. I have worries about maintaining that performance on PC.

I dunno, we gave Redfall flack for being 30fps, seeing people being happy that Starfield is 30fps is just weird.
But hey they never promised 60fps...

Of course I'd rather have 60fps but after seeing the Direct today, I'm more than ok with 30. Todd Howard has my implicit trust, sorry. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I highly doubt it's native 1440p on Series S. How many games are actual 1440p on Series S?

I'm sure the moders will try to get an open frame rate mod up as soon as possible like with Skyrim and Fallout before they were updated by Bethesda. Hopefully it'll work for Starfield too.

It was expected, but still.
A 1080p/60fps option would've been nice, if the console is even capable of it, but oh well.

After seeing the showcase, I'm completely fine with that sacrifice. 30fps didn't stop ToTK from being one of the best games of the gen and it won't stop Starfield either.

Well at least I won't feel compelled to get a Series X now. Will stick with the Series S version for this

Im not that surprised. But it's weird they don't include a mode for 60 esp if they are pushing 4k and 1440p
