That initial Shinra grin in the flashback as beyond horrible.

Agreed. That face was shockingly haunting. Also, the reason WHY he is making the face made it further creepy.

Commercial acting is a few notches above anime voice acting.
Commercials generally have the highest day rates for everyone involved out of all types of production, especially for union jobs. For actors, SAG rates for Class A commercials (which anything airing during the Super Bowl would be) are entirely based on the number of airings, so a major campaign is going to pay big money even at scale rates.
