Darius: split collections, vastly overpriced
SI: significantly cut down collection, all the classic titles missing
MW: MD title cut from digital release

Turrican looks like it's following the trend with half the titles versus buying the packaged collections. And this doesn't even include missing out on the Amazon preorder bonus titles Japan got for Bubble Bobble 4, SIIC, Darius Cozmic, etc.
The Amazon Japan pre-order bonuses for all these drive me up the wall. It's such a shitty deal that the SLG releases don't offer those bonuses. Missing out on Sagaia GB is whatever, but losing out on Bubble Bobble Master System and especially Darius 1 Mega Drive is a bummer.

This kind of shit is infuriating and just makes me not want to buy them at all.

I bought Turrican Flashback last night (Switch version) and it's well worth the money to me, even though I do think it is overpriced by a fair bit. I haven't played these games since the Amiga days and it is fantastic to play them on the Switch in portable mode with a good pair of headphones. I bought the collection mainly for Turrican 1+2, but Super and Mega are a nice bonus as I never played those. I don't even think I played Turrican 3 on the Amiga, but my memory is slightly fuzzy on the particulars.

Turrican and Turrican 2 play really well, I'm happy as can be with this.

Mega Turrican is Turrican 3 basically. Turrican 3 just had worse backgrounds.

This is wrong

Only the Arcade collection saw a physical release in Japan. The Cozmic collection only includes arcade games. The Special Edition includes arcade and console games. The Console games were digital only in Japan.
That's literally what I just said, lol.

Yes, it's totally infuriating. And the western releases come so late it wouldn't matter to just throw them in or make them DLC. At least they didn't have tons of games removed like what happened for Space Invaders (ugh).

Rounding up what we're missing (lmk if there's anything else):

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends
  • Bubble Bobble (SMS) Amazon preorder
Darius Cozmic Collection
  • Sagaia (GB) Amazon preorder
Space Invaders Forever (from Space Invaders Invincible Collection)
  • Space Invaders (AC)
  • Space Invaders Part II (AC)
  • Lunar Rescue (AC)
  • Space Cyclone (AC)
  • Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV (AC)
  • Super Space Invaders '91 (AC)
  • Space Invaders DX (AC)
  • Space Invaders '90 (MD) Amazon preorder
Darius Cozmic Revelation
  • Darius Extra Ver. (MD) Amazon preorder
Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World
  • Monster World IV (MD) physical exclusive
Turrican Flashback (from Turrican Anthology I & II)
  • Turrican III: Payment Day (Amiga)
  • Super Turrican 2 (SNES)
  • Mega Turrican: Director's Cut (MD)
  • Super Turrican: Director's Cut (SNES)

Ah, OK lol. I never really liked Turrican 3 all that much back in the day. I'd still play it because it was Turrican, but it just felt different.

I also looked up Super Turrican 2, which I definitely never played. That's certainly a visual departure from the first games. Not sure I like it. It looks like some ugly, badly animated Metal Slug wannabe. It's obviously hard to judge a game by a video, so it could be tons of fun to actually play.

Yeah, I think that covers it. What a bummer. I really want a Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands collection but who knows how they would divvy those up.

Nope, reread what I wrote. Console games were a separate digital release in Japan. PS4 only had two digital releases btw

So as I said, the collection was already split in Japan following Taito's decision (Square Enix reallu), western publishers either had to split them or do a very expensive CE with both

Blaming ININ for that seems, missguided

Reread what I wrote. The Switch original release was only one collection, with an SE adding the console titles on top and an Amazon preorder for an extra game. It was one release though originally, period.

The much later PSN and eShop rereleases were based around the planned western releases. Taito or ININ/Strictly Limited or both, blame who you like but it's dumb and it devalues these releases. And it's become something of a pattern for ININ/SR even outside Taito stuff which I'd say is telling.

You're making an argument that doesn't exist. Taito went ahead with a dual release for those games, Factor 5 went ahead with a dual release (triple actually) of the Turrican games

Publishers of those very limited runs have little say in the matter,

Taito, Artdink and Factor 5 all just happened to come to similar decisions, literally nothing to do with the publisher handling these releases. Sure, lol.

Taito is notorious for this.

Factor 5 dictates those yes, why do you believe someone editing a 3000 copies run has much say in the matter? It's split because the people behind them want it so. Otherwise they would always be split releases which.. isn't the cas?

Direct your ire at Taito and Factor 5. People complained enough that Taito released the console games digitally in Japan following their SE only bullshit

Forgot Artdink, I guess they also all on their own decided to make MW4 packaged only?

The pattern's clear and in most cases it seems engineered to drive packaged sales. Which makes sense because ININ's just a different brand for SL.

You deciphered it, it's a conspiracy to make you spend more money on useless physical junk and the people making the games have no say in the matter

New info in an email I received today, regarding Strictly Limited's pre-order statuses (statii??):

Turrican - Here we will have to put a later shipping date than anticipated. However, we do have some very exciting news in regards to Turrican! We are especially putting a lot of effort into the statue and we also have some intriguing news about the game itself, soon to be revealed...

*cough* new feature *cough*

It's extremely important to us that the SLG editions stand out content-wise in comparison with the retail release, so please... bear with us. We do believe you'll find it worth it. :)

Thanks for the heads-up here. I just saw the collection on PSN last night.

It's confusing why companies do that. Like, why is there not a digital option for the full game? Namco did the same confusing thing with thier collection.
To make the exclusive physical editions more appealing.

Turrican Flashback is the same collection on PSN and as a physical copy but Turrican Anthology vol 1-2 are more complete, more expensive collections

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Sorry to detail the topic, but I gotta ask about the bolded above.

So, Amazon JP was giving out extra games via DLC when you preordered from them? So, in the case of Bubble Bobble, I'm guessing I'm way too late. But about this Monster World 4 thing, the Genesis one is on a separate cart, like Bayonetta 1 or the Japanese No More Heroes? And does that go for the PS4 one as well? Am I too late there, too?

MW4 - why do a separate card for a mega drive rom? it's on the same card.
bayonetta 1+2 is only available (both games with their own box and card) in the limited climax edition (jp only) that you have to spend scrooge mcduck money on these days
no more heroes 1+2 is both games on one card in that killion dollar trilogy box that is already sold out of preorders. if you wanted those separately you should've gotten them from limited run in january.

Thank you for writing in both threads. I just didn't want to miss out on preordering if I had to. TBH, I was okay with the B1 digital release and I already got my NMH stuff preordered.

Really? So the NA and Asian versions get the MD game inside the new game's cart while the Japanese get it as a pre order bonus. Weird

No idea how it relates to the physical versions, but I was browsing the eShop this morning, and both Anthology Volumes are coming out next Friday on Switch for £29.99 a piece.

Did anyone's PS4 copy turn up already though? I'm curious as to what the difference is between these and the Flashback release.

I have the old Flashback version, and these two appear to have quite a bit of new extra stuff, such as optional remixed music, a music player and art galleries.

Also, Flashback only has these 4 games:

Turrican, Turrican II, Mega Turrican and Super Turrican.

Whereas Anthology Vol. 1:

Turrican (Amiga)

Turrican 2 (Amiga)

Super Turrican (SNES)

Super Turrican Director's Cut (SNES)

Mega Turrican Score Attack (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Anthology Vol. 2:

Turrican 3 (Amiga)

Mega Turrican (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Mega Turrican Director's Cut (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Super Turrican 2 (SNES)

Super Turrican 1 Score Attack (SNES)

Oh, remixed music sounds cool.

Turrican 3 should've knocked like £10 off Anthology 2's price though lol. I still think that one is an odd bundle, especially for people who aren't familiar with the series and won't realize that 3 out of 5 of the games are basically variations of the same thing.

Cozmic Collection was terrible about that too. But I love Darius so I'm a sucker.

That said, Taito's handling in Japan was so, so, so disgusting.

I only ordered standard versions and just got them a couple weeks ago.

I think if there is any hold up it must be the extra stuff/packaging.

SLG's 2020 preorders period were just all bungled up in delays and the like. I'm just glad I'm finally getting them at least. Though it's a tad odd to see them deliver around the same time as my 2022 orders.
