Just come back from my local Aldi.

There was about 10 people in the entire store. Pasta, milk and bread was well stocked. Only thing not there was hand gel and TP.

Hopefully this is a good sign and not just people avoiding the shopping at the weekend because they think it will be busy. I bought some mouth wash and toothpaste and got out without a queue.

Even if 650,000 people die, that's "only" one in a hundred. Sure, it's the equivalent of nuking Manchester, but I still think people would shrug it off because it wouldn't directly impact them :/

You underestimate how large people's social nets are. If one in a hundred people died you'd most likely know people who died yourself and a metric ton of people who know someone who died.

UK - 21 March:

5018 total cases
220 deaths

Italy - 7th March

5883 total cases
233 deaths

With the two week lag, we're worrying close.

"Another 53 people with coronavirus have died in England, bringing the total of deaths in the country to 220.
The patients who died in England were aged between 41 and 94 years old and all had underlying health conditions.
Earlier, two more deaths were recorded in Wales, bringing its total to five, and another death in Scotland, taking the number to seven
Northern Ireland has recorded one death."

Oh sorry I meant delay as in it takes a while to die of the virus, rather than a delay in the gov releasing figures.

Shit, the numbers are really starting to increase now, i dare to think where we'll be at in a week or two, terrifying

From the lockdown in China on the 23/01 to 20/3 to no new cases reported. So that is about 8 weeks of intense lockdown to get that result. It'll take the government banning groups of 10 or more people to get the result they want.

I just don't we are built to have some intense lockdown for 8 weeks. Young people especially won't put up with that.

If pubs and bars ain't open after a month people are going to go crazy.

Force young people to watch the footage from out of Italy. I keep hearing such venom against the media for "fearmongering". THEY'RE TRYING TO MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND HOW WE NEED TO ACT!!!! (caps do mean I'm shouting).

Remember those

KEEP CALM
AND
CARRY ON

I think people have that siege mentality of "it won't stop me" and see above, just keep calm and carry on as we are.

just yesterday a colleague of mine bumped into a couple on his lunch who had come from Kidderminster to get away from the craziness there and they asked him where the lady selling food for the swans was, he asked politely should you be out? As they were very old people to which they replied "we're war babies, some silly flu isn't going to stop us".

People are nuts, and just don't think it's serious.

Having had pneumonia I think a small taste of that shit would do the trick. Just need to strap the fuckers into a machine that simulates just what that feels like for 10 mins or so and they'd rapidly change their outlook.

Went to Iceland, lidl, tesco local, waitrose and sainsbury in Croydon and there was zero bread, toilet paper l, fresh food etc.

Absolutely ridiculous at the moment here.

My wife was in this mad queue

We had gone almost a week without being able to get supplies, we care for her dad who is essentially dying, on a soft diet, so i'm not quite as judgemental about the people involved, she did see people doing the couples trick etc.

So I have a few friends in hospitality who were going to lose their jobs but are now keeping their salary and jobs thanks to the government measures. One had already been told prior to the shutdown that their restaurant was closing for two months and they'd have to use their holiday days for salary for two weeks, then no salary at all for the rest. So the measures are working and employers are taking notice.

But, whilst we have the hundreds of thousands of healthy people from the hospitality and entertainment industries sitting on their arses at home in isolation through no fault of their own and thankfully still getting paid, could we not be putting some of them to better use during this time? Training them perhaps to help out with care or hospitals, helping out with logistics etc? We're going to need the extra pairs of hands.

Hopefully the panic buying will stop once people realise there isn't gonna be some hard lockdown.

Why was there no mention of fines? Also casino's seemed to be left off the list
I think the government is waiting for the coronavirus bill to go through on Monday to get all the new measures for enforcing stuff through. Note 'strengthening the quarantine powers of the police'

I hope you mean voluntary and not Forced training to help out with hospitals.

Government should not be forcing anyone to to do other jobs.

I am in a small town around the Midlands but everything I have heard from friends and family is that the situation in the supermarkets is significantly better than it was around the middle of last week.

I think a lot of the food issues are particularly hitting areas around London still.

To be honest maybe if this whole if you are young you will be fine rhetoric that was pushed out for months to stop people panicking never happened young people would be taking this more seriously. Young people were told to not worry and now look, they are doing exactly that.

To be fair, the west end last night was a ghost town. Nobody is going to party in central london

It has certainly got better near me in London, at least for fresh veg/fish/milk. Even saw some eggs. That said bog roll, long life food, frozen food, flour and cleaning supplies are still nowhere to be seen. It's a funny situation where there is plenty of fresh food but almost no long life stuff.

I just don't think a lockdown is worth it, we are not China. We don't have the police to do anything remotely like them. areas are quiet. It was a sunny day and people flocked to outside areas, think about how it would be if the weather starts to get nice...The west is just not compatible with lock downs. Plus and perhaps most important. People can still go to work in a lockdown and with the keyworker list being just about anyone who is at work it won't solve anything...

Hopefully we will see our curve calm down a bit in the coming week or two, and we can see if these new measures have a tangible impact.

Honestly, that's just the good news I'm clinging on for every day now.

Going to be surreal once this is all over :/

Were still having major issues with food where I am. Yesterday we had to trade some toilet roll for a lettuce with a friend because neither of us could find either anywhere. Meat has been cleaned out too and both fresh and frozen, same with veg. We're lucky we got enough for the week in. I'm hoping next week will be better. Tbh our plan was to do it online for delivery but we got one slot for Monday which I expect to fall through and outside of that all the slots are completely taken. Even collection slots are gone.

This. Anyone who thinks once the suns out people ain't hitting parks and beaches are crazy.

You will not see the police arrest hundreds and hundreds of people.

Sorry in my ignorance I must have missed it
I heard the BBC was looking into broadcasting services over Ramadan so Muslims wouldn't have to go to Mosque. They are looking into how they can support all faiths so they don't have to congregate.

I think fundamentally a full lockdown will only work the consent of the majority of people. Unfortunately it might take us getting to hundreds or a thousand deaths a day for people to see why it's necessary.

The Financial Times has a great graph comparing the curves of different countries, which is helping me remain optimistic about our situation not becoming as bad as Italy's (just yet).

It's accessible here, although you'll probably need to get a trial subscription to the FT to view it regularly: https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441

That's the thing. People talking about wanting a complete lockdown in and out of London. That's just not possible. Like you say, people still need to work and travel into place of business.

People still need to see loved ones in and around the country. The idea that whole rail networks should be shut down is farcical.

Armed Checkpoints at the Watford gap turning back drivers on the motorway. Can you imagine the scenes.

it mostly definitely is worth it and any measure that helps slow the spread is a good one

If it took 8 weeks and full enforced lockdown in China to get results its going to take as long or longer if people don't start to take collective action.

So anyone here self-employed in the UK? My dad has to work at the moment, currently he's doing night shifts so luckily he's not near too many people but still only takes one plus thats ending in 5-6 weeks. I'm a carer looking after my mum so the only income we have is my dad with some benefits.

We can't believe how they've shafted self employed. Seeing shit loads of people in the same situation and complaining. You think they'll change something and bring it inline with what there doing for others?

Just don't see how we can afford to go months on with whats offered because my dad is close to jacking the work in due to the risk of my mum being exposed.

Recently self-employed.

With what I was doing, there is absolutely no work available until this is over - I'm 100% fucked as far as I can tell

The only people who should be traveling are key workers, anyone else should be at home and only one member of the household to go out for food. That is the whole point.

So what's the best educated guess for us to be going into official lockdown? (Bearing in mind our incompetent leadership)

1 week? 2?

It won't be enforced, Brits are too arsey but

I heard the BBC was looking into broadcasting services over Ramadan so Muslims wouldn't have to go to Mosque. They are looking into how they can support all faiths so they don't have to congregate.

I'm already absolutely dreading the state of social media if the BBC broadcasts Ramadan services while people are self-isolating. If people think Britain is nationalist and racist now well oh boy we'll see just how bad it is if BBC replaces Doctors with live broadcasts of Islamic services.

Props to the BBC if this is the actual plan. Fuck the racists and do it anyway.

Hearing people say close the london underground is just insane. How exactly do those people think people will get to work without the tube?

The vast majority of people do not live in Central London and without the tube have no transport.

Once the coronavirus bill goes through I think we'll see firmer measures fairly quickly. They just want the legal cover to enforce such a shift in balance of rights

Jam When Coronavirus bill gets royal assent when the lockdown most likely will come into effect. Also it will be enforced every police office, community police officers, immigration officers, army, navy and RAF person on the street enforcing this.

Also the comments that came out of the press event today - don't show that 'Tories don't value life' they are giving sensible advice but most communities will ignore it if they keep ignoring it they'll be arrested and isolated. End of

Ignoring the idea of the RAF and immigration officers(!?) being drafted into the streets, there are extremely good reasons martial law is seen as an option of last resort in western democracy.

We are a long long way from that point. Pray we don't reach it because it won't be pretty.
