Well it depends what you mean by starter.

The CPU is Intel Core i5 10400F so it's 3 gens old.
So if you want to upgrade the CPU in the future. There's already a replacement socket, and that new socket has had its last gen already.

MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Gaming X Review

MSI's GeForce RTX 4060 Gaming X achieves impressive noise levels that are whisper quiet and temperatures are low, too. Unlike other vendors, MSI achieves that with a compact dual-slot card, which ensures it will fit into all cases out there, and PSU requirements are minimal, too.

Personally I'd get a PC with an AMD B650 chipset with whatever CPU fits in budget.
Because that socket is supported until about 2025. So in a few years you could buy a new CPU (or second hand) and potentially get 2x+ performance without having to replace the motherboard (and ram since that PC is ddr4 whilst new CPUs use ddr5)

CPU is a little old, and the GPU is lower end (but still good). Gut says thats still a cracking price. If you assume the SSD is meh but you can add another later on so no big deal. That motherboard is a little end of line so you can upgrade the CPU later but I think only goes to 11th gen so perhaps not worth bothering and just leaving as-is until an eventual full replacement in however many years.

Seems a good price including everything you need - could sell the monitor for a bit of money if you don't need it..

for £800 though what will you get that beats it? you go 4070 and you're likely looking at over a grand for a system surely? I think its worth checking performance of that CPU vs a more recent one or an AMD equivalent. If its mainly incremental improvements then it could be plenty good enough. Still rocking my 3950x here even though I do look out for offers on a 5800X3D now and again - I don't want to change motherboards as I might as well build from scratch as it'll be new ram as well

It's *fine* but you can do better, especially if you go build it yourself. This prebuilt comes with the usual prebuilt nonsense, like not mentioning the specs of several items (the monitor and SSD for one), along with pre installed bloatware like the 'office and VLC software', along with the antivirus software which you really don't need these days, as Windows comes with a robust antivirus solution anyway. Though as this is for your kid maybe that matters.

I note that they say on that page that you'll need to buy separate speakers or headphones, so I really wonder what monitors they offer.

As mentioned, the CPU is a couple of generations old, and the graphics card isn't the best. But it'll do the job and certainly let your kid play today's games at alright specs, especially if they're just the usual e-sports titles which are designed to run on a toaster.

Just don't buy it thinking you can easily upgrade it in future. Buy it with the expectation that you'll buy a whole new PC in five years time.

Wouldn't be expecting much from the monitor in fact he may use the one I have for work to put him on, not a gaming monitor mind you

Dell 34 Inch Curved USB-C Monitor (S3423DWC) : Computer Monitors | Dell UK

Shop the Dell 34 inch Curved USB-C Monitor (S3423DWC) featuring USB-C connectivity and built-in speakers, or view all External Computer Monitors at Dell.com.

Oh that would be more than sufficient. If anything that'll probably strain the GPU more, being a widescreen 1440p monitor. The GPU is built for 1080p gaming really.

You can measure in days the time it'll take Sunak to flee to California. The only surprise is why he's not there now. I guess he wants to hit two years in the job as a personal milestone.
Probably just wants to make sure that absolutely everything he can ruin for the next government is ruined.

Honestly wouldn't surprise me to see him call a GE and resign on the same day. Call a GE for November to give the tories time to get a new leader in place and it gives him the opportunity to say something along the lines of "I came in and managed to stop the boats and save the economy, now is the time for someone else to lead the party and country through the next phase of growth blah de blah."

Looks like we'll be heading to a new First Minister up here in Scotland if this morning's rumour play out today. Unfortunately, one of the names being thrown about again is Kate Forbes and for the love of god, anyone but her. The current Scottish government have royally screwed up with banning puberty blockers for under 18s post Cass Review (last straw that broke the camel's back for the Scottish Greens) but she would bring her heavy anti-trans agenda to the table and it is frankly disgusting and she should not hold any form of political power.

*sigh* It's only Monday morning, was hoping for a quieter start to the week.

Urgh, I just inadvertently found out that Prue from the Bake Off show that my partner adores not only happily voted for Brexit, but says leaving the EU has 'long term positives'.

Should I let my partner know, or begrudgingly leave it… decisions, decisions.

*sigh* It's only Monday morning, was hoping for a quieter start to the week.

These days, I try to avoid looking at the news (before I go to work) on a Monday morning — it seems like all the worse news happens during this period of time.

If you don't mind me asking, who did you believe to be the least bad person to be Scotland's next first minister?

Half the people who bothered voting voted for it and probably more than that for people her age, I don't think it's worth agonising over who on TV did or didn't. I try not to pay attention to any celebrity's politics unless they say something genuinely offensive

While we're on this one, what's the best place to find deals on a new PC in the these days? I'm happy enough to go build my own or go pre built but I don't really want to go through the pain of choosing my own parts. Just want the best bang for my buck when spending 1500 - 1800 pound for just a box without OS or accessories.

I've been looking at hotukdeals but the guy that usually posts the Palicomp deals has decided to retire just as I've started my search.

pc part picker takes most of the pain out of choosing your own parts imo. stops you from picking incompatible stuff mostly, and is sorted by popularity.

you can pretty much just build something based on brand names that you like up to and including your budget, post it in here for a quick sense check, and that should be good to go imo

Yeah as mentioned above, pcpartpicker is the best option to get the cheapest deal. Put in what you need and it'll find the best price. Stick with Amazon/Scan/Overclockers etc, places you can at least recognise.

The market in second hand graphics cards is particularly good now. You can get a real good deal on older cards especially, though of course they'll be well out of warranty at this point.

If you want a prebuilt then I'd suggest Scan/Overclockers. Though I have no personal experience with buying prebuilt computers.

I bought the PC I'm still using 5 years ago (FIVE YEARS WTF) from CyberPower or w/e they're called.

It's great. It does everything I need, still, and can run most things I want it to...

But I'm the definition of niche mixed with 'don't give a shit' layman: Paradox games and no fuss if the ambient occlusion isn't something something.

In short: prebuilt can be decent, but I suspect will never suit an enthusiast or give you best bang for pund.

Just looked up New 3DS XL prices out of curiosity and, holy shit, when did they get so ridiculously expensive? £230 for a boxed version of the basic colours is insane. Can't even trade my current 3DS in towards it because they'd delete all the data and - in turn - all the games I've bought for the thing.

Guess I'm sticking with my small regular New 3DS. Which is a really nice machine, mind you, but those bigger screens would be really nice to have.

They shot up in price 21/22 shortly after Nintendo ceased production and announced they would close the store down.

Tbh I'd just put CFW on it to back up all your saves & data.

i can vouch for Scan, bought two prebuilts from them.

One a full custom out of sheer laziness, is still performing to this day 10~ years later

Another was a black friday off-the-shelf deal that was particularly good, and although it had an issue with a faulty graphics card upon delivery, they sent out a brand new one immediately and arrange pickup for the old one to go back in the new box a few days later, no mess or fuss.

can deffo recommend

I used to use PC specialist for the pre-builts for work. Always seemed decently put together. Was a few years ago since the last one I got though.

FYI if you are looking to build, my full build I'm doing at the moment is a Ryzen 7 7800x3d (so that's a fairly high end cpu on an AM5 socket), 32GB Ram @6000Mhz 3060ti. Everything is new except the GPU. Mobo, power unit, case, 7000MB/s NVME. Everything. £940 total.

You could easily drop £100 off total going with a Ryzen 5 7600x instead and swapping the gpu to a 4060. Will last several years, certainly a lot longer than the pre-built as won't need a Mobo upgrade for a long fucking time.

Now that I've confirmed my shonky shed in the garden that I use as a home office is indeed covered by my home insurance, I need some sort of incredibly location specific mini disaster to occur that impacts only the shed and nothing else, sufficient to ensure the insurance pay for a nice new one. Lightning strike or airplane debris might suit.

I've always used PC Specialist. Both of my current work machines (desktop and very high spec laptop) are from there. The desktop is 5 years old now and going strong. I'm incredibly pleased with the laptop. They seem reasonably priced and decent quality.

I've also used PC specialist, recently, and v happy with them. They even sent me a 3d picture web thing of it after it was built, to show me. They also have a bunch of configurators so you can fiddle around with what you want.

I also bought a PC many years ago from Scan, and that was totally fine, but I've no idea how good their support would be if you have a problem.

For now - I would go PC specialist again, quite happily.

Shed removal is a tricky one - IMHO fire would likely be too big/dangerous and there is a risk that you end up like Phil on Eastenders....that's a lot of guilt to carry around.

The Car Lot Arson (1994)

In March 1994, one of EastEnders most memorable storylines was the car lot fire which was between Phil Mitchell and Frank Butcher. Frank was in dire need of money and persuaded Phil to return him a favour he had done to Phil by having him torch Frank's Auto's so he could claim on the insurance...

Not been having the most amazing of years, but ngl going to the cinema so often at least forces me to get out of the house and do 'something.' Which, for me, is a real benefit. Otherwise I'd probably just be sitting at home doing nothing all day when I'm not working.

Booked in to go see The Phantom Menace on Friday, then will go for Love Lies Bleeding & Planet of the Apes next week. Might go see Challengers as well before it goes out of cinemas but I'm not sure whether it's really for me.

A cautionary tale. I already look a bit like Phil, that's enough similarities!

If one of you could perhaps crash your microlite into the shed that would be great.

A small rat infestation "could" cause a fire... They are known to like nibbles on live electric wires... If that was to happen in the shed well.... A small fire "could" happen...

They have to do night training somewhere lol, that few seconds of confusion when they wake you up before you realise what's happening is horrible though

I don't get out very much but i've been pleased to see out in my limited travels around my hometown(at least today and yesterday) some hot goth couples head to toe in black as soon as we got some sunshine. Pleased i'm not alone in wearing all black through spring and summer.
