A new, potentially more infectious variant of the novel coronavirus has been found in the United Kingdom in cases linked to South Africa, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said while also announcing further swaths of England would be placed under its strictest COVID-19 restrictions.

South Africa's health department said last week that a new genetic mutation of the virus had been discovered and might be responsible for a recent surge in infections there.

The United Kingdom is already trying to curb the spread of a separate mutated strain of the virus discovered in the UK which could be up to 70 percent more transmissible, with further studies being carried out.

"This new variant [from South Arica] is highly concerning, because it is yet more transmissible, and it appears to have mutated further than the new variant has been discovered in the UK," he said.

"Both of them look like they're more transmissible. We have more evidence on the transmission for the UK variant because we've been studying that with great detail with academic partners. We're still learning about the South African variant."

She expressed confidence that vaccines that have already been developed should be effective "because the vaccine produces a strong immune response and it's broad and acts against lots of variation in the virus".

Yep woke up today to the news my area is going into tier 4 from 00:01 boxing day, I still find it so fucking stupid that the tories give huge delays on these measures kicking in, they didn't see all the people rushing out of London to avoid tier 4 measures and maybe taking the virus with them? My mum also told me that apparently you can still travel into London for work and back which I don't know if it's true or not but if so then what's the fucking point of region based lockdowns when you can go into those places and take it back out with you? Once again the tories want to act like they're trying to take steps to stop the spread but won't dare risk the money rolling in.

There's no doubt in my mind that this variant and the other UK variant of COVID has long since left it's shore. Though, It's nice 2 know that it's getting ppl to Care about covid again...

Yeah even though anyone with a brain would realize this was inevitable and I am certain there is at least 1-2 mutations already in the US that are US born due to the ridiculous amount of spread.

Oh no question about it, just one of many reasons why you'd want to limit spread. The last thingwe need is an appreciably deadlier strain to suddenly appear

Has there been any word yet on whether these mutated strains of COVID are weaker (in terms of effects) than the original? I believe I read that was happened to the Spanish Flu over time - it kept mutating, while becoming less dangerous as a result. I know these variants are considered more transmissible, but have yet to see anything about whether they are more or less deadly.

Anyway, thankfully the vaccines target the "spike" protein of the virus, which should mean it'll remain effective against all of these variants.

Yeah the M-RNA might be novel in its approach

The South African variant is reportedly more resistant to antibodies produced by people who have already had COVID and indeed vaccinations. Not good.

Reported according to whom? Please don't post concerning stuff like this without a credible source backing the information.

what the hell. Shouldn't we be more worried about the speed this thing is mutating. It's only been know for like a year.

South African Covid-19 variant may be 'more effective at spreading'

Research still to confirm threat posed but variant does not appear to provoke more serious symptoms

The new variant has multiple changes in the spike protein, the part of the virus that binds to cells inside the human body and that is also the main target for many of the antibodies produced during infection or after vaccination. Scientists have isolated one particular mutation – N501Y, common to both the new UK variant and that from South Africa – which they believe is important to its ability to spread fast.

"Putting our data together with that in the UK, this [South African] variant is a bit more effective at spreading from person to person and that is not good. It means we have to get a bit better at stopping it," said Dr Richard Lessells, one of the specialists leading research into the new variant in South Africa.

Thank you. Sorry for my tone, I only ask as both my elderly parents have had the virus already and now this new strain has me concerned all over again.

Not a problem. I was heading out to work and didn't think how my post would read without a source. As mentioned above it is speculation still but a sobering read all the same. Stay safe everyone.

So people in tier 4 areas aren't allowed to travel to tier 3 or lower areas, but they are permitted to travel to other tier 4 areas. And with almost the entire South and South East areas of the county put into a blanket tier 4, that essentially means as long as you want to stick to those regions you can go wherever you want. Southampton to London every day? Knock yourself out.

Which is fucking stupid as shit, let's all lockdown and stay safe in a dangerous covid area but hey don't forget to travel for work to London if you have a job because we sure as shit won't fund you to stay home and protect the community by not risking more infections. It's fucking stupid as shit. The fact that people who may not be infected and are being told to stay home to avoid it in tier 4 areas are also being told to travel for work etc if it's expected within tier 4 areas is exactly the half arsed measure that the tories keep using and then acting shocked it doesn't stop the spread of the fucking virus. I can't believe people vote for these idiots.

It is. I live in the Midlands but work next to Heathrow broadcasting live premier league. The only way I'd get away with not going to work is if elite sport is paused again.

I'm fortunate at least that the room I work in is single occupancy. We go a distanced handover at the end of the shift and then wipe everything down.

The only people in the building are those that can't do it from home. A lot of edit suites are now empty as they are all sitting at home on their pants editing.

Temps are checked on entry and if you've got so much as a headache they won't let you in the building.

As i said 2021 is off to a good start...

combine that with x-mas vacation returners regardless of the country you are living in and it is sure that this thing will definitely be ongoing for quite some time.
