Victoria Mahoney is Second Unit Director on Star Wars Episode IX

There were some rumors about this for a while, and people immediately assumed it was Ava who the rumors were talking about.
Second Unit is largely a lot of crowd shots, transitional stuff. Sometimes more, but it's unlikely she'll be getting some pivotal throne room-level stuff.
Can be good experience though, especially with the complexity of something like Star Wars.
Most likely that is it. There are very few female directors out there, specifically for big budget stuff. This is the chance to build up that experience and hopefully take it to the next level

It's important to start giving stuff like this to women and minorities if you want to build experience for eventual directorial positions.
Also, wasn't there something crazy like the second unit being the ones who filmed the truck scene in Raiders? Sometimes second units do a lot of work people don't recognize.
Most film directors are white men. So most women -- and especially black women -- behind the camera are not going to have especially long filmographies.

I may be totally misremembering, but I think on a podcast Mangold said a lot of the second unit did the filming of the action set piece and chase with the limousine in Logan.
Why? And is this something you truly believe, or something you want people to believe you believe? This mindset baffles me. Star Wars films tend to be large productions. While the only truly great Star Wars film was directed by someone with no "huge blockbuster film" experience (Kershner), that's not a risk corporate Disney seems interested in taking. They were interested in Ava seemingly, and while she ultimately passed I get the impression they would have taken her out of the running due to the disaster that is A Wrinkle In Time. As others have pointed out, not a lot of women get the opportunity to direct big blockbuster films. Even less so for POC.
But to outright say you hope a POC gets to direct a Star Wars film in the next couple years, with zero experience...I'm just curious as to why. It seems to me that wanting a good director is more important. Especially when you know the concept/script will be...not good, coming from D&D.
