I was just watching a video showing a bunch of old games and Timesplitters 2 popped up. it has this really memorable sound for its AK-47. Hyper exaggerated and ricochet heavy and instantly recognisable even in isolation and it instantly sent me on a nostalgia trip.

Goldeneye has a similar thing too for me for its silenced pistol...it's almost an iconic sound for a gun. Akin to the pulse rifle in aliens...or a Light Saber...

So which weapon sounds stand out for you? Ones you'd recognise blindfolded. Ones you just love the sound of. Or maybe ones you miss? Because I find it quite hard to pick any modern ones. Developers tend to target accurate/real sounds which means a lot of games just sound very similar now to me. Varying degrees of oomph but nothing that really stands out as different.

this is tough but I feel I gotta go with my gut reaction. it makes sense.

the plink of fire balls from SMB. the original. followed closely by the buckshot from duck hunt.

the original Gear of War torque bow has a distinct fwoop sound, too.

BOOM (chk.. chk... chk...)

Y'know, I think that might be enough.

Ratchet and Clank 2 and 3's Bouncer. Launches a ball the size of Ratchet that pops on impact and releases little noisy balls that pop after 3-ish seconds or upon hitting an enemy/obstacle.

Both the bass "boom" sound from launching the ball and the metallic skittery sounds of the tiny balls have stuck in the back of my mind for some reason.

Sadly I can't find a good video of it on YouTube.

The very first sound I thought of was DOOM 2 super shotgun, followed by Link's sword and Mario's fireball.

Glad to see I'm not alone.

It's the lightsaber and I'm not really that much of a Star Wars fan. Iron Man repulsors spring to mind, as does the PWUCK from a Mario fireball (or Mario jump sound if that counts as a weapon).

Mega Man buster charge is up there as well.

Yoshi is kind of a weapon so his BEEP BEEP when you hop on him is up in SMW there as well.

Destiny has a ton of memorable sounds. Jötunn, Telesto, Bastion, numerous more. Handles this aspect of weaponry really well imo.

The Goldeneye rocket launcher for using the same stock library sound effect used in so many other things that have me thinking, hey, that's the Goldeneye rocket launcher.

Lightsabers are quite recognizable but in large part due to movies. For something more gaming focused, I might say a Halo energy sword, which is basically a lightsaber.

I would argue Kirby is a weapon. And you certainly know the sound he makes when he's near.

The sound made when swinging Strider Hiryu's Cypher comes to mind. Vergil using Judgment Cut in the DMC series would be another.
