What's your favorite final boss in a side-scrolling Sonic game?

Ah, the final boss. I still remember losing all but one life as a kid, finally beating Mecha Sonic with my brother on Sonic 2, chasing down Dr. Robotnik, watching his egg robot rise above us, and then realizing we were standing in front of his foot, so we died and had no continues.

Good times.

With that said, if we're talking classic games then either Mania (either final boss) or S3K (super fight).

The giant robot from Sonic 3 & Knuckles is probably my fav. I always loved how all the different phases of the Death Egg Zone flowed into one another.

From the relatively simple fingers, to the giant laser, auto-scrolling part, and then finishing it off with a good ol' foot race with Robotnik in his pod. No phase takes too long to complete and much of the challenge comes from doing them all in a single run (because you're most certainly gonna do it on 0 rings).

Also the music is goated.
