My closest Mexican friend, who toured the world doing mariachi as a student, gave me a sombrero six years ago. I don't ever wear it, but I keep it in my office. Not giving it back.
I had my birthday at a Mexican restaurant and the staff forceibly put a sombrero on my head sang a song and gave me a shot of tequila. Fried Ice cream too.

The most used sombrero is the white cowboy sombrero, and that was created by USA cowboys, so, that would be hypocrite to say the least.

i think the weird,problematic, contradictory stuff is to use sombreros and vote for trump, since trump hates mexico.
Aren't some levels of appropriation ok? I mean, it's a cute touristy thing the country itself probably sells as an image and a product for others to enjoy. Like wooden clogs, cowboy hats, and... other things I thought of when starting this post but already forgotten. I don't know if it qualifies as some kind of offensive cultural appropriation.
I think as long as it needs to be reminded to Americans as often as it is right now, it's not pedantic.
This is what weirds me, but like I don't care really. I encourage all people that want to get a sombrero to do so, as I do encourage all mariachis to be samurais!
