The legendary clan of vampire hunters, sworn to fight against Dracula, has given us many accomplished heroes over the course of several games.

Let's start from The Beginning:

Leon Belmont:

The OG Belmont, Leon came from a life of means. Originally a noble knight alongside his friend and master strategist Mathias, his life takes a turn for the worse when his beloved, Sara Trantoul, is kidnapped by the notorious vampire, Walter Bernhard. When the church denied him permission to pursue Walter, he renounced his title and made his way for Walter's castle alone and unarmed. Leon's journey to defeat Walter and win back his beloved would make him cross paths with the alchemist Rinaldo Gandolfi, who bestowed upon him a whip of alchemy to help him fight the undead. Leon ultimately failed to rescue Sara, and her soul was infused into his whip, creating what would become the legendary Vampire Killer.

Unfortunately for Leon, after his defeat of Walter, his friend Mathias, having lost faith in God after his wife's death, revealed that he had staged the entire affair, and would steal Walter's powers and become a vampire himself. Mathias Cronqvist would thereafter be known as Dracula, and Leon swore that he and his descendants would fight against him until he was defeated.

Leon starred in Lament of Innocence, originally released for PS2.

Trevor Belmont:

latest

The man who defeated Dracula for the first time.

Trevor was born into a time when the Belmonts, now widely known as a family of powerful vampire hunters, had begun to be feared by the general populace. In a twist of irony, the very strength that they had cultivated for nearly three hundred years in order to protect the people had caused them to persecute them. As such, Trevor was in many ways the inverse of his ancestor Leon; born into a world that hated him, into a family of faded renown.

When Dracula rose and began his dark invasion, Trevor rose to the call regardless of what the people thought of him in order to fulfill his destiny. Aided by the magician Sypha Belnades, the two came across the son of Dracula himself, Alucard, and enlisted his aid as well. The three of them, together with the help of a common thief named Grant, stormed Dracula's castle, and Trevor put an end to his brief reign of darkness by slaying the king of vampires.

In doing so, Trevor restored the public's faith in the Belmont name... or at the very least, stopped their persecution.

Trevor is the star of Castlevania III, originally released for the NES. He also makes an appearance in Curse of Darkness, and is the protagonist of the Netflix series (itself an adaptation of Castlevania III).

Christopher Belmont:

One hundred years after Trevor's defeat of Dracula, the evil vampire returned, and his one hundred year resurrection cycle became evident to the world.

Christopher Belmont, like his ancestor before him, took it upon himself to rid the world of the Prince of Darkness once again. Unlike Trevor, he did so alone. Traversing a deadly castle of demons and traps and denizens of darkness, he destroyed Dracula by himself... or so he thought.

Fifteen years later, Dracula, in a very weakened state, attempted to return once again. Unable to manifest himself in the world, he set his sights on Christopher's son, Soleil. The day after Soleil's coming of age ceremony, he disappeared, and four elemental castles manifested in Transylvania. Tackling each castle, Christopher destroyed their guardians, all the while searching for his lost son. Upon defeating the last guardian, Dracula's castle arose - and in it Christopher finally found Soleil. His son's mind had been warped by the count, and he was forced to fight against him. Knocking him back to his senses, Soleil warned him of Dracula's plan to use the four castles to return. Christopher heeded his son's warning, and courageously pressed onward to defeat Dracula for a second time.

Due to his deeds, Christopher Belmont became a legend.

Christopher was the star of Castlevania: The Adventure, and Belmont's Revenge, both originally released on the Gameboy.

Simon Belmont:

Perhaps the most famous of all Belmonts, Simon's feats go beyond legendary.

On Easter day, exactly 100 years after Dracula's last defeat, he returned once again. Simon took up his family's heirloom, the Vampire Killer, and went to Dracula's castle alone. Making it past everything Dracula had in store for him, he defeated him - although this time, Dracula was ready for his assailant. Before his defeat, Dracula placed a curse on the vampire hunter, dooming him to a slow death.

Seven years later, the curse had begun to take its toll. In order to lift the curse, Simon traversed the countryside, collecting Dracula's parts. His goal; to ressurect the count, and kill him again. Simon's Quest was long and arduous, but he succeeded. Dracula was revived at full strength, and, in an inverse of Christopher's second battle against the weakened count, Simon was the one who was at a disadvantage, the curse having ravaged his body. Despite this, he overcame all odds, and killed Dracula again.

Simon is the star of the original Castlevania game, as well as its sequel Simon's Quest, both originally released on NES.

Juste Belmont:

latest

Juste, born in France, was the grandson of Simon Belmont. The blood of the Belnades clan also flowed in his veins.

Juste was considered powerful, even among his family, for his superb magical talent derived from the Belnades family. His adventure began when his best friend, Maxim, approached him and claimed that their mutual friend and love interest, Lydie Erlanger, was kidnapped and taken to Castlevania. Juste arrived with the wounded Maxim, but went alone when Maxim needed to stop and recover. Chased inside by a giant undead knight, Juste had no other choice but to search the castle for Lydie, armed with his trustworthy Vampire Killer whip and a bracelet that both he and Maxim shared.

After journeying through Dracula's castle, Juste learned what Maxim had been up to since he had last seen him. Maxim had been collecting Dracula's body parts in the hopes of resurrecting the Dark Lord and defeating him, much like how Simon defeated Dracula. However, this plan backfired, and Maxim ended up getting possessed by the dark power of Dracula's remains. Because of this, Maxim ended up developing a second personality - a dark Maxim, through which Dracula's will was able to act using Maxim as its vessel. This evil side of Maxim was the one who kidnapped Lydie and left Maxim with his amnesia so he could lead Juste to the castle.

Juste never fought with Dracula himself, instead defeating a wraith crafted in his image.

Juste Belmont is the hero of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, originally released for the Gameboy Advance. As an aside, he is also the only Belmont character to star as the protagonist of a Metroidvania style game (the rest are all "Classicvania" protagonists).

Richter Belmont:

latest

First picture: Hero

Second picture: Villain, five years later

A descendant of Juste Belmont, and a renowned vampire hunter.

He had a strong sense of justice and an unwavering will. Despite every generation becoming progressively more powerful, Richter stood exponentially above all others, often hailed as "the strongest Belmont." Brandishing the legendary sacred whip which his predecessors wielded, this hot-headed youth pushed Dracula to the brink.

Five years after his defeat of Dracula, Richter was brainwashed by the evil priest Shaft. Fully cognizant of his immense strength, he felt empty after Dracula's defeat. Having served his holy purpose of driving back the Prince of Darkness, he no longer had a goal to live for. It was at this time that he was approached by the evil priest, who preyed on Richter's weakness and convinced him to revive Dracula so that he could kill him again - and to do this as many times as he desired, in order to live a life of endless fulfillment and holy conflict.

While brainwashed by Shaft, he served as a primary antagonist in Symphony of the Night, and his turn to the dark side forced Alucard to emerge from his centuries long rest, save Richter, and defeat Dracula himself.

Due to Richter's actions, the Belmonts lost possession of the Vampire Killer whip for over two centuries, and disappeared for a time.

Years later, his spirit would serve to test Jonathon Morris as a worthy successor to the Vampire Killer during the Belmont clan's long period of absence from the world.

Richter is the star of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, originally released for the PC Engine.

Julius Belmont:

latest

The last Belmont, Julius marked the return of the Belmonts to the world stage after over two hundred years of absence.

Nostradamus' prediction of Dracula's most drastic rise to power in the year of 1999 came true. Reclaiming ownership of his family's sacred whip, Julius set out to defeat Dracula as his ancestors did before him. However, this time, he set out to make it permanent. At his side was the son of Dracula, Alucard, and an unnamed member of the Belnades clan. Storming Dracula's castle and defeating him in combat, Julius and his friends then sealed him and his castle inside a solar eclipse, finally destroying the evil count for good. Julius had finally accomplished what his ancestor Leon had sworn to do centuries prior. This conflict, supposedly the worst fight against Dracula yet, came to be known as the Demon Castle Wars.

The Demon Castle Wars somehow caused him to have amnesia. By the time of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, in 2035, he could only remember that his name started with a "J." He wandered the earth and eventually found himself in Dracula's castle, which had been brought back into existence by Graham Jones, a man who sought the power of Dracula for himself. After regaining his memory, he continues his career as a vampire hunter, and joins Yoko Belnades and Alucard's alter-ego Genya Arikado in attempting to stop Celia Fortner and her cult from reviving the Dark Lord once more.

Even far past his prime and with Dracula gone, Julius remains ever vigilant against the darkness. When he becomes aware that Mathias Cronqvist, the original human persona of Dracula, has been reincarnated, he holds him at arm's length, even after he proves himself to have remained a good person this time around. But should he ever fall to darkness again, Julius is always ready to take him on.

Julius' climactic final battle against Dracula is not depicted in any of the games, but his older, amnesiac incarnation appears as a supporting character in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, originally released for the Gameboy Advance.

The only correct answer is the GOAT (GOATee?) Julius Belmont. Beards automatically make you the best.

Easily Richter, and I say that as someone who doesn't even really care much for Rondo. He's just such a bad-ass in Symphony of the Night, and I love the Japanese voiceovers for his item crashes.

Gonna go with The Legend, Simon!
It might've been Julius but he's the only one who doesn't do the Belmont strut.
He probably just forgot how to do it though...

Julius, like his design the most and sealing drac in a solar eclipse is pretty cool. I don't want or need to see it in a game or anything, I like how it is this mythic event that we only have accounts of. Leon and Richter are right behind him though. Juste and Chris are probably last. Also, where's Sonia?

Richter, then Christopher, then Simon. Richter is cool anime character (cool,) Christopher goes through hell, and Simon is a meat head, but not as dopey as his grandson.

Richter is a little biiiiitch in SotN, and while Rondo of Blood is a good classic Vania, Trevor has had the most interesting story. The animated version of his story is also the best take on any of the characters as well.

My favorite is Trevor largely due to the netflix series but until then it would have been Simon purely for the story of Castlevania 2. Dying from the curse, pissed off enough to reassemble his hated foe just to kill him again is some next level spite.

Juste. Stays fashionable while kicking ass with magic. Julius a close second.
