You don't need a huge amount of ugly reacts but a simple like post function seems like a no brainer.

Because users would make posts to get likes.
The ziggers and attenpts at jokes in the first pages at any thread are more than enough

It would make more people comment "for the like" instead of the sake of commenting for discussions

Would be nice to have a way to express appreciation for quality posts without spamming up the thread.

I don't think it would affect the quality of posts in the way others seem concerned about.

On top of what people already said, it is also a very clear development that likes/dislikes leads to less conversations, because people are inclined to just react instead of writing anything as reply, which frankly is a deathknell for a forum. On Social Media that kind of works, as "engagement" can be measured and pushed via likes, but on a forum it would just lead to a lot less messages and interactions.

Would be nice to have a way to express appreciation for quality posts without having to spam up the thread.

Thats the interesting misconception though see what I wrote above, you should totally express appreciation by writing it in the thread, as thats the only way forums work/keep conversations up. Many Reddit subforums have exactly that problem, that people are still relatively active, but dont comment on anything anymore.

Because they're pointless and lead to less actual discussion/conversation

It would be nice if someone answers a question and you don't want to just say thank you as a reply.

Essentially, because it allows anonymous support for posts that get banned without that user saying as much in their own words, or having to put the effort into their own argument. It also boosts those who can make a horrific argument with elegance or guile, by allowing others to then echo and hide behind it. Much like 'will you buy it?' polls about games with problematic elements, it has the side effect of reinforcing majority views in topics around representation etc which isn't what this community is about. If people want to back another post, and there are also tons of great posts every day, they can do so with their own post rather then making a discussion forum a popularity contest.
