So we all know how the creator of Ruruoni Kenshin got arrested back in 2017 for having so much CP that they thought he would distribute and yet all he received was a mere fine, temporary suspension from Jump and he even admitted his depravity with no apology or remorse. However, the manga is getting a new anime and various mangaka give him congrats on a new museum, attend parties with him and Oda has openly supported and praised him. I don't understand why isn't he blacklisted or people sweep it under the rug.

Japan is a bit weird with this.

Admit you're a pedo, and get busted with child pornography? Slap on the wrist.

Get busted using drugs? Forever blacklisted.

The guy who wrote Toriko didn't get blacklisted anywhere and he wasn't already a huge star on his own power. He just kept getting pushed by Oda.

Just like Hollywood, artists in these industries protect each other.

The main reason he didn't get a stronger sentence is because he bought his CP before it was fully illegal in Japan. CP was legal to own until 2014. Production and distribution of it was banned in 1999.

Now if you excuse me I have to scrub out my google search after verifying those dates

I think not that this excuses anything the fact this was legal until relatively recently means they could argue in a way that could get him a lighter sentence where as drugs have been super illegal for a long time.

I am surprised that US Shonen Jump basically just stopped translating the series. I actually thought it was cancelled for a while.

Pedophilia has only been recently criminalized in Japan, so I believe it's still culturally accepted somewhat or at least as a horrible thing? (ofc it's inaceptable)

Don't France have some sort of similar issue too?

Fuck off
If you get caught with drugs Japan will straight up
1984 style unperson you.

Future releases of anime and films will have lines redone by different actors, they effectively stop acknowledging you in public.

It's a complete career ender.

Unfortunately, this is basically it. Japanese law is weirdly lax when it comes to pedophilia but super stringent when it comes to drugs.

The Toriko guy is *also* a pedophile (or at very least an ephebophile, as he got caught having sex with a 16 year old child prostitute) and has had multiple series in Shonen Jump in the 20 years since he got arrested on top of being buds with Oda.

I don't know, Japan is evil or whatever. Clearly the people who disapprove of his behavior already aren't working with him, and I have doubts his new anime adaptation is what I would call high profile.
Hey what kind of response is this

Saying "Japan's laws when it comes to pedophilia versus their stance on drugs is pretty fucked up" isn't saying Japan is evil. It's just....exactly what it says. It's fucked up.

Also Kenshin is still very popular and high profile despite the creator's history. It's literally one of the most famous shonen series of all time.

Koichi Sugiyama was a fascist and nearly every known figure in Japanese games development sang his praises. Like everyone said drugs will get you "cancelled" over anything else.

It's more about order than morality with drugs I think. Drugs see similar treatment in authoritarian governments (Qatar) for that reason while similar types of moral threats as this author are not really paid attention to if citizens are kept in line.

I'm not talking about the comparison of different laws, I just don't enjoy the conversation framing (that keeps coming up in subjects like this one) that a pedophile getting away without major consequences is a 'Japan' problem.

And sure, the author has his fame still, but what news we got from the new anime adaptation indicates that his name doesn't have the same pull it used to anymore. Wasn't it being done by some mediocre studio without many great anime in it's catalogue?

He got caught attempting to have sex with a 16 year old prostitute (multiple times, I think), but I don't think he was charged with actually having sex with them.

I know it's a minor distinction, but I doubt they would have let him return if he actually did the deed. For instance, look at the Act-Age writer. He's not getting work there again, because he literally groped an underage girl.

Japan is fucked up when it comes to sexual violence/crimes. The country also has huge underage prostitution issues. I wish more international anime/manga fans cared and talked about it, because considering how far back Japan is on feminist issues, it'll be a while before it changes from within.

It's absolutely a "Japan" problem though, by which I mean it's way more prevalent there than it is in many other developed countries.

If you really read into how bad it is, it'll make you sick. It's not just about sexualizing minors in fictional things, like I've seen some argue before.
Many Japanese women say they stopped experiencing groping when they graduated from high school and no longer wore school uniforms.

"[It] never happened [again] since I took off my uniform," says 20-year-old Kotomi Araki, an economics undergraduate student and waitress, who says she was groped on crowded trains throughout high school.
The whole article is worth reading despite being a bit old.
www.aljazeera.com

Sexual assault in Japan: ‘Every girl was a victim’

Sexual assault of schoolgirls is commonplace on Japan’s public transportation, but now more girls are speaking out.

But it's a serious problem for girls and women of all ages. So many of my female friends in Japan have told me stories of being abused, assaulted by strangers, or raped. Anecdotal, but it seems to be reflected in stats mentioned within many articles I've read. Japan gets to keep boasting about their low crime rate because...
A survey of sexual abuse victims in Japan released on Nov. 20 has shown that under 30% of victims reported the damage to police or support groups, while many face difficulties acknowledging abusive acts as sexual violence.

Many sexual violence victims in Japan do not report assaults to police, support groups: survey - The Mainichi

I used to say "Japan is such a safe country, and I never felt like I was in any danger even when I hung out in places Japanese people told me were very dangerous." For years now, I've had to say instead "Japan is a safe country if you're a man."

What's up with the drug stuff btw? Remember the Yakuza spinoff game and the actor? The dude was erased with the quickness.
You can come back from being outed/arrested for some drugs, but celebrities get wiped from existence if they do stimulants.

I also believe the mangaka of Toriko didn't know the girl was underage when he solicited her. Meanwhile the Act-Age mangaka (Matsuki) was a serial abuser who literally bragged about his "hobby" in the author comments of wsj. I wouldn't be surprised if those author comments are the reason Matsuki has been banned from the industry while the authors of Kenshin and Toriko got slaps on the wrist.

Act Age was a serial abuser?
For context

In the author comments in WSJ Matsuki had a few comments over Act-Age's 2.5 year run about his "hobby" that involved "his bike". Like how he needed one so that he could socially distance and "fulfill his hobby". He was arrested and confessed because he was caught on camera twice in the same day doing drive by bike gropes. It's very likely he groped more, but he was only charged and confessed to the two on camera.

The real shit is that Japan just doesn't care about the sexualization of minors the way other countries do.

And that's a real shame.

View: https://youtu.be/Ky3HqvT3M8E

Also tangential, it's WILD how many people sacrificed their youtube careers trying to do takedowns of this video.

Japan tolerates sexualizing kids like Republicans tolerate school shootings.

Boy you ain't lyin'.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy how blatant it was. He's still being published, they released two more live-action movies based on Kenshin, it's getting a new anime... it's not even even a Hollywood style, sweeping under the rug, open secret type situation. He straight up said: yeah, I like little girls, I had tons of child porn, my bad, I'm sorry to disappoint everyone. And the whole industry was fine with it! I haven't seen any pushback or anything from other authors or manga-adjacent professionals.

I grew up loving Kenshin. Had the complete anime series on DVD. When I heard what he did, I was crushed. Furious even.

I refuse to support the creator in any way now. They may have forgiven him there, but I'm not going to be a part of that group. Fuck him.

The Opium War and the western power bringing Opium to Asia.

Although Japan didn't suffer directly throught he Opium war like China, it has seen first hand on the colonial power's use of Opium to distress the local populance and did a complete banning of it.

When it became a Imperial power, and took over Taiwan and Korea and China, it also saw first hand the direct result of Opium on the people, it's also although Taiwan is "liberal" on LGBT issue, being the only one that allow same sex marriage, have a non-binary cabinate minister, we are not open to the of drug, and the bringing in of illegal drug can still result in strict punishment

That video is really gross

It is, but it also ain't lyin.

It why recommending anime can be a minefield sometimes. I was sort of interested in watching season 2 of Made in Abyss, but the time to child sexual assault in that show is, literally, 30 seconds. Still one of the most highly recommended anime out there though.

I got got by anime earlier this year when the anime for Mieruko-chan came out. I had only read it but had 1000% straight up forgotten that the first 2 episodes worth of content is all weird sex comedy stuff towards 15 year olds. Fuck me, right? Show about a girl who sees ghosts filled with a bunch of sex shit in the first two episodes and then NEVER EVEN CONFRONTS SEXUALIZATION EVER AGAIN! Like they're filling a quota.

It's a real problem.

I will generally never get over that time I saw people state without a hint of satire that the prostitute anime featuring a character who looks like a child was sex positive. Honestly a would genuinely cosign a wholesale ban of the word loli and/or an autocorrect that translates it to "underage girl"

This is also why I find it hard to talk about reading, manga, or watching anime. Because people automatically want to put you in the bucket.

I have some close friends who still get a little nervous when I talk about reading manga, because of some of the stuff that's out there. I just have to try and keep it to myself. Like to the point where I was talking about how great A Silent Voice is in the front of mine said that he doesn't trust even that.

Oda was Watsuki's assistant before starting One Piece and it's well-known that they've been close friends since then, same with the Toriko guy. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's using his pull as one of the biggest mangaka ever to launder their reputations and make sure the shit they did gets memory hole'd.

Reading Oda's afterwords to each chapter of OP do not shock me that the man would look the other way in regards to perverts.
