I just reminded myself of this fucking amazing amount of tone deaf buffoonery upon learning that Sean Spicer would be appearing on this season's Dancing with the Stars. Oliver "fucking IRAN CONTRA" North was in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Oliver. Fucking. North. And Treyarch treated this like it was some amazing event, a true great guest appearance by an actual criminal. A man who admitted to lying to Congress and illegally destroying records related to the Iran-Contra Affair. A man actually convicted of THREE FELONIES related to that whole incident. For some godforsaken reason, Treyarch thought this was a man who needed to be elevated as if he's some American Hero and digitized in all his youthful glory for BLOPS II.

Dumbasses always talk about SJWs and politics in their games, you know how the liberals are ruining even our hobbies by doing something as incredulous as including girls and not showing them with their tits out or having a single LGBT character. Yet, no one raised a fuss when Conservative Criminal Oliver North was given a hero's fucking welcome in the most popular game on the planet. If you needed anymore proof that gaming is largely Conservative, this should be your proof. Imagine instead of Oliver North the COD developers chose to include Chelsea Manning or Edward Snowden in their game and portrayed them as heroes complete with BTS documentaries where they promote the game, and thus themselves. I guarantee you the internet would not have been so silent. And, I'm not someone who agrees with either of those individuals or what they did. But, I know damn sure the Alt-Right YT crowd would be calling for massive boycotts of COD if they were in the game or any such popular video game.

So, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THIS SHIT?!

Honestly forgot he was in BLOPS2. Yikes.

Buuuut on the other hand, is it that out of place with the general military fetishization COD has been doing for years?

Because modern military shooters are among the most effective form of modern war propaganda we have in the western world, hiding their absolute soldier worship behind the theoretical evils of the Elite - and even if a higher up general ever steps out, you can be sure it will be American Soldiers who stop him. Also, remember this?
EA removes links to weapon companies from Medal of Honor Warfighter website

Thanks for calling this out and putting it back into people's mind, though. It's totally fine to have fun with these games, but you should always be aware of who makes them and who profits from them.

Call of Duty Creators Say Oliver North Helped Make Their Game More Authentic

Lt. Col. Oliver North is a polarizing figure in American history and, we found out, earlier this month, an advisor on the next huge Call of Duty game, Black Ops II.

They talked about it to Kotaku 7ish years ago.

Well, nice to see that absolutely nothing changed in close to a decade :D

So, you know we're not trying to make a political statement with our game. We're trying to make a piece of art and entertainment.

I forgot that he was even there!

But damn, that... is not a good look, to say the least.

And then again, CoD isn't necessarily known for its nuanced, and intelligent views on war.

I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, but all the CoD's since the original Modern Warfare have been about gun porn and fuck-yeah-the-military more than they've been about anything else. These games are for people that eat that shit up more than they are for anyone taking a thoughtful look at the way war actually works in the real world, so I'm not shocked that someone of that ilk would find themselves in these games.

Why put out America's Army, when CoD is already making war look just so cool!

Hey man, it's not Gritty Realism™ if the series doesn't fellate a celebrified war criminal.

"authenticity" and money

This was before he went to the fuckin NRA and getting ousted by also shitty Wayne LaPierre who is in Trump's ears regarding guns

Remember when Ollie North ran for the fucking Senate against Virginia senator Chuck Robb in 94 and almost won if not for Marshall Coleman siphoning his votes?

A Perfect Candidate, a really good 1996 PBS documentary covered that race and boy that was surreal looking into Ollie's operation

Well, his theme song is banging.

Everytime I think Oliver North,, I think of the Ollie North song

Treyarch was so desperate for that game to feel like the real world.

Dan Olson (Folding Ideas) just streamed CoD: Ghosts last Monday, and this has been on my mind for the last two weeks. Dude should be in a prison, and Reagan should've died in one instead of having a lavish state funeral, but that's not the reality we live in.

Well, his theme song is banging.

I always think of this when I think of Oliver North or Iran-Contra.

If you're looking for a critical lens of the military-industrial complex in American war-based media, good luck.

COD has always been gun and military fetish trash. It is a disgusting series so it is fitting they add fuckers like that.

I hope I live to see the day the game meets its well deserved death.

cod has always made war seem cool and badass, nothing really surprising about this
the new modern warfare is doing the same with how it portrays the horrors of war while also making being an operator seemingly the coolest shit ever

Was surprised I'd never heard of this, so I read a plot synopsis on wikipedia. Doesn't actually say much about Ollie's appearance but the whole thing is bonkers; it's like a greatest hits of shady CIA ops and proxy conflicts but strung together with the hunt for one fictional antagonist, marginalising any broader historical forces. Surprised Manafort wasn't in there given it opens in Angola. Imagine 2016 except all the gamergaters know Trump's campaign manager from a guest appearance in COD.

Reminds me of the time when medal of honor warfighter had a campaign where they'd sell guns and axes and shit as *merchandise* and give the profits to dead soldiers' families...

Call of Duty is basically America First: The Game, so I don't know why something this gross would come as a surprise.

A man whose convictions were reversed and whose charges against him were dismissed. So I don't really see your point.

And public opinion at the time was VERY favourable to North.

Call of Duty is an extremely politically conservative game series, and the Black Ops series is downright fascistic at times (especially the third game). The fact that David Petraeus and Oliver North are both in the game should clue you in. If that's not enough for you, give the first few missions of Black Ops 1 a play and see how ludicrously nationalistic, pro-imperialist, and self-aggrandizing this series can get.

Listen, I get all the "it's COD" posts. Yes COD glorifies war. But, this is past even that. It's like getting Manuel Noriega or Pinochet to lend their likeness or voice in the game for authenticity sake. Like, what the fuck? There's being a tool for war propaganda and then having actual criminals responsible for treason and/or war crimes in your game.

I mean, the weird thing is that BLOPS wasn't even really "America, Fuck Yeah!" The series actually showed how shady foreign policy by the U.S. government creates the very enemies it seeks to destroy. That was the MAJOR selling point of BLOPS 2, that U.S. Foreign Policy creates villains. We are meant to sympathize with the villain, Raul Menendez, in the game. We see how America created this villain. And then that same game puts in Oliver fucking North as a guest appearance.

Hi Olllie!

You can tell this casting backfired for them. They had to get more beloved and squeaky clean celebrities for future games like Kevin Spacey so they wouldnt have to deal with cringey problematic stunt casting blowback
