Re: the Viera, I remember the first time I saw an image of them and went "Dang they really went all in with the Playboy Bunny aesthetic. I thought FF was better than this". The fact they did not introduce male Viera to FF14 just confirms to me this race was created just to titillate straight guys. Ugh...
It's the same thing with the Asari, though they at least get real clothing

A repeating pattern of the actual lived experiences of people (who happen to be women, LGBT+, PoC, and so on) being dismissed because of what the "bros" think, it happens basically every time there's a thread focusing on their issues. I mean there were even defenders of shitty/no pockets on women's clothing "because my SO says they ruin the line of the clothes" or whatever. It is kind of ridiculously bad and we've lost several significant posters because of it.
I know I've been cisplained over Persona by several people. These are always such laborious topics.

Rowan kenrith from the upcoming set

Yeah, I'm liking the more painterly aesthetic seen in some of the new art too.

Please tell me there's not a scene in Trails in the Sky where Estelle pole dances.
No

You know what's the worst part?

She's basically Code Vein's version of the Dancer of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls 3. It really shows how much class From Software had in comparison.

From Software has had dancers, witches, evil queens, and even sex workers as characters or enemies.

Can you imagine how they'd be represented if done by any other Japanese dev?

What card is that Orzhov noble art from? She looks incredible.

When From Software designs a character, there's always something more than just initial appeal. It's what gives their world building so much coherence. They know their characters have to mean something beyond just "cool" or "sexy" or "funny".

And it's that sort of approach Code Vein and so many other games are missing. They are so focused on immediate gratification (Here's a big glowy anime sword, here's some thigh, here's the designated comic relief constantly yelling jokes in a silly voice) that they forget about depth and consistency. And that simplistic approach leads to characters becoming little more than stereotypes, many of them hurtful.

god, they even directly say in the mass effect artbook that the asari were created just to fulfill the "sexy blue alien woman" trope
cuz that was something they absolutely needed to do
and you can definitely see the "this is actually meant for straight men only" vibe when you go to the strip clubs, where in this huge galaxy filled with all sorts of types of people, the only dancers are ever asari and human woman (all of whom are, of course, skinny)

in ME2 they tried to equalize the asari aspect somewhat by introducing the drell, who were designed to be sexy male aliens for straight women (as the asari were sexy female aliens made for straight men), but by ME3 the drell are basically forgotten
(IIRC a writer said that the reason Thane has so little romance-specific dialogue in ME3 is because they actually forgot to write any until late in development)
meanwhile, the asari are revealed to be the super special species chosen by the protheans to receive portions of their knowledge and technology

I love mass effect but maaaan mass effect......

Mass effect is great as long as you ignore everything about the main storyline

Came across this, was it posted? Apologies if so.

Thread:

This thread is amazing and so on point. Having lots of friends in the video game industry, from AAA companies to indie ones, I can see this happening first-hand. Most people have little idea of how much games have gone through countless iterations to satisfy the marketing team needs more than the actual artists' vision (narrative or visual).

Thread:

I don't know what game she was wortking on but from the images it looks like a gatcha mobile game.
As far as I can tell they make 99% of their money on people throwing money at the game in the slim hopes of getting that SSSR swimsuit costume.

I honestly don't think gatcha games are worth fighting for. They are already disgusting gambling simulators and money sinks.
Not worth saving.

Thanks for sharing. It must be rough being an artist and have to deal with your creations be changed or destroyed like that.

With how we sometimes hear about devs having to fight to get women or poc on their game's covers, this probably happens much more often than we think.
I've mentioned it before, but some advice I received a couple of years back as an author went along the lines of "don't write anything too diverse/progressive if you actually want to get published". Also that, the more diverse your cast, the more generic the story should be.

Gotta avoid alienating the market, and all that.

Hey I still have an old account on the old forum...I wonder what it's like now afte---

giphy.gif

Well, you made me go the site and log back in just to see what my status was. I wasn't expecting to be banned, and indeed, I'm not, because I wasn't that active in political threads... But now I have to look at this list of achievements I just got for logging back in, like I'm still part of the community or something, and I feel dirty for it.

I never had an account there, but was a lurker for years (for whatever reason my ISP never got on the whitelist). I'm sure I'd have been banned anyway for similar reasons as Joe2187. I've stopped going there completely now...for awhile I was basically using it as digital self-harm and I realized it's just not worth it.

Anyway, that twitter thread is super interesting and I agree, it would make for a good thread here on its own.

They'll only get worse, as each extreme becomes normalised and they have to push things even further to stand out from the crowd.

So like porn consumtion for way to many people. Vanilla isn't enough so they need more and more extreme stuff. Only with this the developers need to at least try to make it look like it's not porn. As long as the law isn't broken they can turn the dial up as long as they're "creative" enough.

But only a few thousand people are needed to make them a good profit and there're more than enough that will throw hundreds and thousands of dollars into this pitt just to get these kind of skins. That's why i personaly don't really see this going away as long as they stay within the laws.

People praising Kait's design in Gears 5, don't forget that there's an entire swath of wonderful women characters in the Gears series

While it lacks in body diversity ofc Gears has some of my favorite women in a shooter.
