The conversation in the last few posts reminds me of an old question I had:

Where are all the Sad Mom games?

No seriously, are there any games when you're a female guardian with a ward?

Does Okami count?

Bound

What Remains of Edith Finch.

The Cat Lady

Monument Valley 2

Kings Quest VII

Shelter

Smoke and Sacrifice

not much in terms of playable protags that are moms

Great examples.

Amy. I never played it and it got mixed reception, but you're in a motherly role and are in escort missions with a young girl.

Amnesia_+Rebirth_20201107141038.jpg

Amnesia 2, you're playing a pregnant mom. I didn't play it so I can't speak to the execution but it's definitely sad!

Sad dad games have more to owe to Lone Wolf and Cub, The Road, and other literature classics than...Bioshock Infinite 😅

UNDYING (not Clive Barker's one) recently came into early access. Player plays as a mother who has been infected in a zombie apocalypse, and must do anything she can to ensure long term survival of her son before she inevitably dies. I have not tried it but it has gotten a good reception so far.

Shadwen and Plague Tale: Innocence spring to mind immediately as games where you're a woman taking care of a younger child, but there are definitely far fewer games like this staring women, and as far as I could think of zero where you are a literally a mother. Undying is not one I'd heard of before now.

A Plague's Tale would have been nice if you were protecting a younger sister rather than brother. Given how insufferably written Hugo is, perhaps we dodged a bullet.

As far as Sad Mom games go, I wouldn't recommend Amnesia: Rebirth.

Amnesia Rebirth is one of the worst games I've played over the last decade. So disappointing because the idea of a horror game (or any game, really) where you play as a pregnant woman is great

Bayonetta, or is she not sad enough? Or actually spoiler? I remember segments where you have to defend the child in gameplay, so the child isn't just in cutscenes.

Don't know about the second game, but the child under Bayonetta's care in the first game is actually a past version of herself.

......A new Harry Potter Mobage called Harry Potter Magic Awakened, where you can create your own chara and attend Hogwart
It's a card base team battle game mobage that release in Taiwan and China

Trailer and game clip.

What is recently notice and making various news(Real news also not just game news) is the hit reaction face on char
The male chara have no expression, while female chara have is what is commonly known as a fetish face known as Ahegao (アヘ顔)
This is a issue, because the chara you play as is the starting age of the school in the harry potter universe and is a children.

Female chara on top, male char on lower left

The developer has come out and apologize and is saying it is a modeling/animation error on female tongue going through the mouth

It's good they apologised but why are only female characters having such glitches? 🤔

Dunno how this game works but maybe it is similar to the reason why Genshin Impact uses the same body types for playable characters. To have less issues with animation.

If they use the same animations but the models differ a bit then it is possible that is the reason.

You can see these kinds of issues especially when you mod games. I have a lot of experience modding GTA and I ran into weird animation issues countless times when adding different character models.

What was the tumblr (or twitter ? can't remember) account that critiques female designs and redraws some of them again ? I'm in need of some ammo and examples of how men/women are sexualized, but sexualized in different ways in media and videogames.

Problem with Sad Moms is it implies they've, you know...had the sex.
Let them keep their tongue inside their mouths and those girls are still making orgasm faces in response to getting hit.
"Hit a woman so hard she reaches orgasm and her clothes fall off," remains one of the most blatantly disturbing trends in Video Games.

Axiom Verge 2's main character, Indra, is a middle aged CEO who's estranged relationship with her daughter is the fulcrum of her characterization, though she doesn't get to interact with her daughter much in the story (because of... spoilery reasons).

She's... kinda like a sad mom protagonist.

Women characters are still only allowed to be "strong female lead" archetype characters at this point. Hopefully the industry eventually branches out into portraying more women as actual people.

I still hate that most women characters are tied down by the fact they have to be young and available. Most moms have to die just so the child or husband gets some easy depth into their story arcs.

It just occurred to me that Catherine from Might and Magic is a happily married warrior queen mother who fights her own battles. Her visual character design still suffers from her being in a fantasy game from 90s in the predictable ways.

Only having 5 (I believe) weapon types isn't doing them any favors either.

That outfit though. May as well start putting them in their underwear.

How's the thread feel about this new character in Hunt Showdown?

" Though she preferred the fairer sex, Lulu Bassett got by taking men to her bed. When she learned that she could make a better living taking men to their graves, she decided to put her charms and instincts to use in the Hunt. Passed down to Lulu from her mentor and madam, The Marquis, like the women who have wielded it, is beautiful, sharp, agile, and deadly; exactly the tool needed to slip between the ribs of an over-eager John."

I'll say I'm not a fan. 'Women who sells sex becomes sexy murderer of men' always falls flat for me, it's a trope aimed at men's interests. Playing a character designed to titillate doesn't appeal to me, nor does the sociopathy. I don't play the game so it doesn't matter.

Performs the acts you would more usually expect of a man with a tool named for a male member of the nobility. That of course that means she can "slip it" to them as they was all over-eager and therefore asking for it.

Description is a bit eye-rolling, but I think her design is pretty good (especially for a sex worker, since they're often fetishized or worse), she looks kinda cool.

Edit: is she playable? I don't think I've ever seen a playable sex worker in a game before, so that's neat, at least.

Does the Courtesan from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer count?

Yeah, she's playable. All the characters are just skins tho and the game is first person.

It's funny the roster isn't that big but so many are already samey.
My brother gets so defensive when I call it out, he brings up the roster and says "there's only these 2 ice girls and they're both trained by the same dragon so that's why they're similar but they don't look like anyone else"

Right...

Genshin used to start out rather okay in the variety department, but it took a hard turn into waifu earlier this year and it seems to be struggling to recover from that. It's why there's a high amount of hype for Itto, who's apparently a burly biker gang type of dude, but people are disappointed that he's not actually as buff in-game as his artwork depicts going off of beta leaks (due to him reusing the 'tall male' model).

I follow Genshin closely, and there's a few observable things about its roster off the top of my head, especially among its 5* character cast. Namely certain elements are overwhelmingly male and others are overwhelmingly female.

- Jean is the only female 5* anemo character to date, and she was a release character.
- Diluc is the only male 5* pyro character to date, and he was a release character.
- There are no male 5* cyro characters. In fact, there hasn't been any new male cyro characters since release, with 4* Kaeya and Chongyun.
- There are no female 5* geo characters. A new 4* female geo character will be added in the next patch, while Ningguang is the only other one since release.
- There's only one male electro character, the 4* Razor who was a release character.
- (On another note, there are no male catalyst wielders yet, which is basically the game's mage archetype. At least there's a couple archers, but they don't play like actual archers.)

Dead Space 2 was recently added to the Xbox FPS boosted games and I was playing through it and what they did to Ellie is criminal. EA was very open that DS2 underperformed and wanted to expand its appeal with DS3.
