I'm currently listening to MinnMax's podcast and they're talking about Stellar Blade. One of the reviewers mentioned how as a character Eve is just boring, despite really enjoying her VA. No real comment about the sexualization. Okay.

But then another one chimed in to add that he had a brief interview with the devs, and he specifically asked if they had a lore reason for Eve being into the costumes.

I shit you not.........the answer:

"Yes, we had a reason why she was interested in the clothing she was finding on desolate earth. But we took that out."

They had considered giving her a personality, even one as trite as "oh wow these clothes are interesting/such a foreign concept." Should we explore that? No, that's still too much. 🤣 The convo then pivoted to how inspired the devs were with the biblical references.

They really seem to try to avoid making any statements that could lose them viewers when it comes to Stellar Blade, it kind of bums me out. Either that or they just don't care about the objectification. Between that and the odd or uncomfortable moments/comments from Ben Hansen towards his colleagues that seem strangely hostile at times, I may just drop the podcast. Not too many good gaming podcasts out there I feel. 8-4 Play is ok, and Triple Click is solid.

Honestly I was confused and I thought the petition wanted a free game and then I clicked I realized it's even sadder.

I started replaying Fallout 4 with the new update, and was almost immediately struck by multiple dialog lines where my character was referred to as a guy. I remember this being an issue when the game came out as well, it's like they just forgot to include dialog for women all over the place. Combined with the fact that they pretty obviously wrote the backstory and main plot around playing as a man, default you to being a guy, etc., it almost feels like it might have been an "optional" feature that they added later in development.

what's also a shame is that even in the very narrow angle of roleplaying someone in a straight marriage, FO4 doesn't explore the unique viewpoint of the female protagonist. Not in like, a motherhood/fatherhood way, that's more isolating to the general public really, but it's actually stated in-game that Nora, the female protagonist, worked as a attorney; Nate, the male protagonist, was the soldier. there could have easily been a lay-up in writing; I would have loved to play as a lawyer in a post-apocalyptic wasteland musing on her partner's experience as a soldier, but alas FO4 did what it did.

I still don't understand what "vagina bone" these guys go crazy about is.

www.dailydot.com

Gamers think 'vagina bones' exist—and want them to stop getting censored

The vagina bone's connected to the woman bone. Or something?

To me it sounded more like this was going to be a "she breathes thru her skin" level moment and they just removed it because they knew it was going to be a bad reason and they just decided to say fuck it and go all in on the objectification.

Yeah I don't fucking understand why so many critics are going to bat for the "it's not as bad as the Discourse™ says" argument.
Most of the critics are probably white dudes who are so divorced from social issues that nothing registers for them.

"This doesn't affect me at all personally so surely it can't be problematic."

I can't believe the coomers turned on Stellar Blade.

No wait, I can.

They can't even be happy with a hypersexualized game. Truly broken people.

I thought we were supposed to be the perpetually mad ones. They're out there drawing MSPaint battle plans over an inch of crotch line, meanwhile I'm buying stuff from the girl vendor to increase my friendship rating so she sells me earrings lol. Weirdos.

They want to complain just to keep doing that and they are so lost at this point. I do wonder what goes through their minds and realize what they are doing is exposing them the more they talk. Sometimes it's for the best to not be so vocal about it as it gets worse the more they go on about it.

If you type in "stellar blade swimsuit censored" in Google, you see all kinds of outrage.
No surprise there. I've been seeing it all over YouTube for the past day. It's kind of amusing, because normally YouTube has no idea what to show me, since I barely use it, but I guess you watch one Stellar Blade video...

Which is funny because it's actually a bunny suit lol

😂

I don't know what they were expecting. Korean devs can make the the claim that the game will be uncensored all they want, but Sony has been doing away with this stuff, even in Japanese games. I remember how the dev for Senran Kagura had to censor the box cover art and other parts of their games, increasing the difficulty of getting sales overseas until they agreed.

Oh yea, the algorithm on YT is pretty fucked up. You watch one thing of anything and all of sudden your feed is loaded with it.

Frankly, when part of the appeal of your franchise relies on that sort of thing, toning it down by minuscule degrees seems like a thankless effort (this is separate from changes made for legal reasons, mind you). You'd have to reinvent the whole concept from the ground up to actually do it convincingly, instead of doing it lazily and pleasing nobody.

Case in point: Stellar Blade making those small modifications to some outfits doesn't change that fanservice is both the big selling point and the biggest point of criticism. I think people in this thread and elsewhere have already addressed the specific and overarching flaws with the game as it exists, almost none of which are solved by slightly editing outfits.

It's never been about alienating the straight male demographic because characters are too "feminine", it's always been about alienating other people like women, trans, and minorities into feeling that they don't belong in video games. The generic straight men playing video games with characters that are women are not going to care that the woman is into fashion, guns, jewelry, etc, and feel alienated by them not being "one of the boys" so long as you give them T&A. Those types of gamers were never interested in women having a personality beyond their body in the first place.
Related a PoC myself, part of the problem I feel with representation of minorities like myself in games is the similar issue that minority characters in games often comes off to me as overly "white washed" in terms of personality traits and interests.

Now before that take gets leering side-eyed reactions, for context, I specifically don't mean to intend that I think certain personalities traits and interests should be associated or restricted to certain races or ethnicities or genders, but rather it feels like in games and media that minorities, like women, come off as far more biased, limited or restricted to characterizations that are more relatable to a more "generic" demographic, hence "white washed". A Black person cannot be "too Black" is another way to put it.

And maybe there's good intentions and it's to not offend or come off as exclusive, or perpetuating and reinforcing sexist or racist stereotypes because few people on the development team actually knows how to authentically represent such characterizations without being offensive or exclusive, but it's awfully convenient how both of those justifications work towards the same ends of having diversity and representation only be skin deep.

This is true. Mind you that I'm not sticking up for Sony in any way possible, but there definitely seems to be some kind of disconnect between ShiftUp and Sony that certain outfits are getting patched. As you said, none of the misogynistic issues with Stellar Blade can be resolved with a simple Photoshop patchwork, and this is more or less probably something to do with the rating system because it's doubtful that Sony or the devs all of a sudden feel bad about this now.

It's actually really interesting that you bring up the "can't be too Black" issue because I've been noticing that kind of discussion coming up with South of Midnight and how so many chuds are going after the main character for being heavily stylized and I literally see nothing wrong with her.

For what it's worth, if I came off really strongly, I do apologize. I can be pretty overwhelming and aggressive when I debate about things and sometimes that bleeds off the wrong way with words. It's probably the German blood in me. People tend to say that I have the patience of a saint, but also have never seen my volcanic temper.

Mark Kern is just a huge grifter lol. But yeah, super sad.

Poor covered up vagina bones 🥺
I really hope this sorry individual doesn't still live in OC. If I ever saw this grifter walking around in South Coast I'd be compelled to cackle derisively and toss my boba tea on him.

POC characters are a tough line to walk for most game devs who don't have immediate access to a diverse writing or dev team. We need more consultants like SBI or Rami Ismail who can help teams of all sizes make characters that feel good and representative, without harmful racial stereotypes.

But been subjected to this all my life in games as a woman, so I feel ya. Get excited to see a female character in something I'm playing, but then realize it's either an overly femme trope or a male personality stuffed into a barbie doll shape. We've just as diverse as men in personality and motivations, dammit!

I'm finding the Vagina Bones discourse especially hilarious given that I just explained that meme to my partner last night and I woke up to... all this.

I must just be...not as plugged in as I think. I now know about vagina bones thanks to this thread lol.

I've had to hide all the SB threads though. I can't hang without the urge to say things that'll probably get me in trouble.

Not only that, there ARE porn games, and with surprisingly high production values. These people want sexist and misogynistic views as an industry standard.
Sony entertaining this has been disappointing.

I sometimes wonder if the push for fanservice in part comes from a sense of shame in actually playing porn games. If it's not outright porn it's more "acceptable" for others to know about it. I dunno, not really a concrete thought. Especially when I've known this type of person before and he 100% mostly plays actual porn games too.
