I'll admit I was a bit turned off by the clunky animation and combat at first but the depth to this is really pulling me in the more it throws at you. Just got the photography mechanic and still figuring out the ins and outs of the curse system but I can tell this one will be a big time sink. Was turned off by the roguelite elements initially but thank god for permanent items and the remembrance system, makes it a lot easier to progress the further you go. Easily becoming a goty contender and I've seemingly barely scratched the surface.

Just reached chapter 3. I'm not even a fan of roguelikes, but the element is not too oppressive here. I even put Dragon's Dogma 2 aside to focus on this, it's great fun.

yeah, hum.... that's not happening lol, i can't even be in the same room as scary movies or scary games
I share your pain...

I'd suggest trying to play a horror game while in company of friends as the banter can help make the atmosphere more comfortable. A friend of of mine felt the same about horror games but wanted to try getting into them, so I suggested playing like the RE1 remake while streaming it on Discord for me and other friends. She ended up finishing the game and loving it, although she's not quite ready for more on-your-face horror games, especially if first person. But it was quite fun watching the playthrough!

Looks really interesting but levels being procedurally generated is a big downer for me tbh.

I haven't beaten it, but I've played through enough loops to say pretty confidently that the map generation isn't that heavy. It's more procedural in the items you get, from my experience, and you have an easy way to lock in specific items to start each run with as well. The Roguelike / Procedural portions are pretty generous and unobtrusive, I found.

Right it seems more like it just shuffles the handful of rooms for each long "hub" hallway, and shuffles the contents of chests. If you don't have an item saved, you might get lucky and find it close to your checkpoint. You can also always find a few items from the previous night by quickly entering the "wrong room".

I've been mostly positive in my other posts so far, but here is some gripes: the game will force a night reset on you a few times in the story, which is never fun, even if no big deal in the long run.

Any enemy with a flamethrower can't be working correctly: they will literally melt you and any npc friend in seconds. I can understand switching strategies, but these guys mean stopping everything to put on fire gear, and even if you are immune you can kiss all your built up minions and NPC escorts goodbye.

The music is so good, but it seems some of the great tracks only play on one screen! It reminds me of the amazing world map music in Anno 1800, but you never keep the map open more than 5 seconds.

That happened to me too, lol. I botched a few early runs when getting the hang of things, then I managed to keep a good run going from Chapter 1 to Chapter 3, then I made the mistake of going into the attic and got my ass beat. Good times.

Looks like there was a patch.

  1. Withering Rooms v1.23

    Important Fixes

    • Under some circumstances, reward items dropped by the Butcher Surgeon could disappear from the inventory. Upon loading a save in this situation on this patch, these reward items will be restored.
    • Fix the Quest display in later game chapters appearing to be blank sometimes until reloading into the game.
    Polish
    • Additional German and Japanese localization improvements and bug fixes
    • The NPC at the end of Chapter 3 now has a choice with a warning that continuing will end the chapter. Since all Chapter 3 content is accessible from Chapter 4, this warning was originally deemed not required but it (understandably) caused concern.
    • When playing on resolutions below 1080p, i.e. Steam Deck:
      • Notes now default to the standard typeface(usually you have to press the Typeface button or press X/Square)
      • The font size and zoom level of the full map have been increased

    Bug Fixes
    • Fix the full map text not updating when changing languages
    • Fix being able to press the "Toggle Legibility" keybind/controller button when you shouldn't be able to

  2. [9:36 AM]
This build is live on Steam and will be live on other platforms/stores over the next few days(some platforms will take longer than others)

Also I'm trying to find the OST, and the dev made a post last year saying a version of it was on the discord, but it looks like that has been removed since then.

Ok I found the game discord, and in there the dev said just a few days ago that the soundtrack is on its way to steam and bandcamp soon.

As if there wasn't enough Silent Hill in this already

So I am about 10 hours into this game and it's incredible. It's also clear the game has a lot of optional stuff, if you want to mainline to the end, it doesn't seem that long, but there is areas upon areas upon secrets upon secrets to discover. It also has a really good amount of enemy variety.

Overall I highly recommend this.

Finally a big outlet picked this up, if only for a very tiny preview.

More! More!

Crazy how much this is flying under the radar. This came out of nowhere but is easily one of the best horror games I've played in a long time.

So I beat this game after 14 hours.

It's fantastic. I do have some quibbles like some enemies having waaaaaaaaay too long of attack strings, but overall it was fantastic.

And NG+?

It's dope as fuck. It's actually a good case of NG+ having a lot of cool new stuff that helps keeps it fresh with new goals and such.

I might go for the Plat Trophy.

Should I be revisiting the hedge maze in chapter 2? Is there any plot related things there or good items?

I'm a bit into chapter 2 and yeah, this is pretty great so far. I've mainly been doing melee so far though which maybe I should be second guessing since I've seen a lot of comments that magic is the way to play.

I'm all the way in NG+ and outside of using the spell for Armor and Enchant, I never used any of the other spells and was 100% melee focused.

While I'm currently dunking on everything with magic, I do plan to give melee a spin myself, since I found a few amazing melee rings in the labyrinth. I also think it can possibly be more enjoyable when you actually have to be dynamic with enemies and not just cast Harvest Field and call it a day. I also think actually having poise would be refreshing, as constantly getting knocked down is such a drag. I just need to find a good weapon/helmet I want to invest upgrades in, and then I will respec.

Btw the game website actually has some cool sections for official hints, and an official enemy and item list.

Just started Chapter 3 and am having an absolute blast with this thus far. The exploration is fun and rewarding, the Roguelite aspects aren't all that intrusive, the story is interesting, and the effects once you're sufficiently cursed are nice and creepy.

I feel like I'm fundamentally missing something because in chapter 3 there are an absolutely insane amount of enemies and my melee barely does anything to them. Even with pumping the melee up and focusing on bleed it just feels like I am getting rocked.

How spoopy is this? I'm assuming it's more fun than creepy but I'm sure it's at least kind of unsettling. Or maybe not? I get kind of Nightmare Before Christmas vibes from it.

Can anyone tell me where I can upgrade my weapons? In Chapter 3 with a bunch of weapon upgrade kits, but no idea where to use them.

goddamnit why isn't anyone else making games like horror loving people are making games i can't play these things they're scary but there's sooooo maaaannnnyyyyyyy of them i'm feeling left out
Horror is not an easy genre to get into, so don't feel bad. Start out with some movies, Get Out and A Quiet Place are good entries to start with. There are probably a lot of articles on good starting places. Before you know it you will be blasting through Outlast and being the only person in the movie theater watching Late Night with the Devil (that was me, added to spookiness, great movie).

Premise sounded really intriguing & I love lots of different systems (Astlibra Revision is amazing for that) - So I took a very cursory glance at reviews on Steam and I'm convinced, purchased straight up, so here's hoping it is as enjoyable as it is curious

Ok, so, got this earlier, have made it to the Butcher Surgeon - I'm doing almost no damage at all to him, is this a fight I should even be trying to do? Or should I avoid him for now?

A lot of tough enemies in this game can be tackled with consumables and status ailments. I can't remember if the Butcher can be bled and/or poisoned easily with flasks and weapons, but if so give that a try. Early on I often filled up enemy bleed meters and then just ran away. If you can get distance and cast a door trap on a wardrobe in there and then hide somewhere past it, enemies will open it trying to find you and get blasted.

Hit credits with Ending C. Damn great game.

Harvest Field should probably be nerfed though. Just ridiculously OP.
