Welcome to the first Sunday Box Office thread on ResetEra! This is yet another slow October weekend, but things should pick up soon.

Box Office: 'Jigsaw' Dominates Pre-Halloween Weekend With $16.3 Million

In one of the slowest weekends this year, horror titles dominated the pre-Halloween box with Lionsgate's opening of "Jigsaw" leading the way at a respectable $16.3 million at 2,941 North American locations.

The second weekend of "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween," also from Lionsgate, turned in a solid performance with $10 million at 2,388 sites, but no other title cleared the $6 million mark. Matt Damon's "Suburbicon" struggled with about $2.8 million at 2,046 sites and Miles Teller's "Thank You For Your Service" finished with $3.7 million at 2,054 theaters; both came in below modest forecasts in their launch weekends.

"Jigsaw" is the eighth title in the "Saw" franchise, which centers on the deranged killer played by Tobin Bell. Audiences gave the movie a B Cinemascore, and the film made about $4 million less than projected in its launch weekend. The movie, which has a budget around $10 million, is set a decade after the death of Jigsaw as police investigate a series of gruesome murders that fit the Jigsaw style.

That's the second lowest OW for the Saw franchise, just above Saw VI's $14M and well under the last film's $22.5M. The low budget means they'll scrape by in the end but probably not what they were hoping for.

Happy Death Day is making a tidy profit, I had not realized the budget was so small.

Blade Runner up to $223M WW. Guessing it ends around $250M with China and Japan the wildcards. Is it expected to do much in China?

Yeah can't see images either. Ragnarok next week will be the real story.

Is the 107.6m for Ragnarok good? I'm not sure what the bar is for International openings compared to domestic.

Yikes
That Suburbicon number is abysmal. If it gets adjusted downwards it will claim both the overall lowest wide (2000+ screens) opening from Paramount and the lowest wide PTA.

Kingsman is gonna limp over $100 million. They had to be expecting better than that.

I SHOULD NOT STILL BE ABLE TO POST THIS

In addition to this, most of us realize that Sony isn't in the greatest shape as a film studio. Sony is about $5 million away from doubling Paramount's domestic total for the year ($817M to $411M).

I think it's AWESOME that the last week's thread got locked, it was always confusing to navigate on Sunday mornings as the discussions were split.

I'm pretty bummed about Jigsaw's opening and the actual movie itself, but hopefully Thor doesn't eat it completely and Halloween throws it a dollar or two. Hope its low budget and franchise legacy carries the series forward.

Okay now that I've regained some composure;
Only the Brave had a pretty decent drop, still won't save it.
Jigsaw didn't beat its tracking which is not great, wonder if it's just franchise fatigue or if Happy Death Day and It sucked some of its potential.
That is a pretty solid opening PTA for The Square, wonder how it will do in the expansion
And the less we say about The Snowman the better

IT at 666 million. Truly helped by Satan.

Thor has opened huge and to be honest, I expect around the same number for its domestic opening. The reviews are good and it should also have good WOM + short length means it will have more screening.

I think $300+ LTD gross for Thor Ragnarok is a lock at this point.

Jigsaw was ridiculously entertaining for me as a franchise fan so it's a bit of a shame that the best entry in the series since the initial trilogy has largely been glossed over.

Also, woof at Suburbicon. Haven't had a chance to catch it yet but looks like I better hustle before it clocks out after a week. Paramount has been limping this year.

Wow @ that Geostorm budget. SyFy Original level quality for 60 times the price!

Surprised that Jigsaw was so anemic. I know some people were interested enough with a tinge of nostalgia to give it a look but word-of-mouth was probably poison. Ragnarok should get things humming again.

That seems like a pretty decent current total for Kingsman, no?
I had my issues with the film but I still enjoyed it I'd like to see a better, leaner sequel to round out a trilogy.
