Honestly, at the end of the day, this is a FTP game, that while it might not be my cup of tea stylistically, it had a lot of talented people working on it and I'm not going to shit all over their work. I get it. The concept doesn't really make sense within Clancy's world, but the brand has been cooked to death and they're obviously trying to branch out. Apex Legends looked nothing like Titanfall even though it's all from the Titanfall universe. They took a chance and changed things up and now Respawn has a massive hit.

It's time to stop making excuses...

The game looks stupid overall and I hate what they've done with the Tom Clancy license...

But gunplay looks good.

Some of you really sound like boomers talking about the Tom Clancy license LOL...like most people don't even know who he is and his estate surely doesn't mind...

Like is this a running joke I am missing? Up in arms about some dude who wrote books in the 80s...hey maybe someone will hate Jurassic Park World because Michael Crichton doesn't approve...talk about taking some fictional books too seriously...

Tom Clancy partnered with Virtus Studios and founded red Storm Entertainment to make different kind of games than we saw at the time. Rainbow Six is born as total opposite of run&gun shooters from that time. And since then we got many games that followed those guidelines. And that is what people who know who Tom Clancy was want from games with his name. And why would Ubisoft put his name in the title if they didn't want to attract people who know who tom was?

yea the games haven't been about the books in forever if ever really… the games have obviously been slowly over the years building their own game universe and this game looks to be the smash brothers of Clancyvese bad guys based on Clancy games. Never old novels

Is anyone else tired of Ubisoft's tendency to make things "punk" or "edgy." I know many games they make aren't like it, and I'm struggling putting my thoughts into words, but I hate the vibe I get from this game (or at least the marketing for it in that video), and what I see in Watch Dogs. It just feels so "fellow kids" to me by pandering to the whole "we are rebels and badasses and we hate the system."

Wow you really went full boomer lol...Tom Clancy doesn't give a fuck about gunplay...like you really think he would turn down money that a F2P game brings in? These games have sold to WAY MORE people than the people that read his books.

Yes...those first 3 RB6 and Ghost Recon games from almost 20 years ago are the sole totality of what these games should be...like what? These are basic militaristic terrorism conspiracy novels, which is the brand. It's like the Pokemon fans that think these games can only be like Gold/Silver. Most people alive don't even know who he is, but they know the brand, which is the same.

Tom Clancy = shooting bad guys as the good guys

Clancy doesn't give a fuck about anything because he has been dead for almost 8 years. But he might have cared when he was first involved with Rainbow Six.

Weird to see Xclusive Ace tied to this game. He hated the specialist abilities in Black Ops 4 cause a lot of them were "press x to get a free kill" type abilities. This looks no different with one way shields, rocket launcher sentry guns, flamethrowers, and swarm drones.

Why do people believe this? Out of nowhere lol...it's just a name license...like OMG it's not a tactical shooter I don't want your money!

And again...his ESTATE does care...and obviously don't care because they are rolling in it. Let's not act like Clancy was crying when Vegas and Vegas 2 came out, or all those awful Splinter Cell games...

Yea he dropped a video yesterday where he reiterated that he doesn't like hero-type abilities. He said his role was more early on (I think a year and a half ago), and that it was mostly related to tuning the gunplay and movement

They are literally just dropping big old steaming deuces on Tom Clancy's name at this point. Polar opposite of his vibe. They have zero respect for the dude/brand clearly.

I don't think the Lawbreakers comparisons are fair because Lawbreakers was a decent game that tried to innovate little bit and introduce something new like the anti-gravity mechanics. They at least tried to be somewhat different and I can admire that.

Xdefiant seemingly has no new ideas to offer. It looks really generic. Customisation options seem to be designed to extract maximum amount of money from the players.

I am sure some people might enjoy this, but for me this is a collection of everything I dislike in modern FPS games.

For comparison, here is a high octane shooter with realistic shooting:

Made by a small team of a few developers with a small budget.

Yeah, this is on point. It's hard to take seriously if you know anything at all about Ubisoft as a company.

I mean, if this formula is so generic, why is there zero viable COD alternatives out there (and no, BF isn't it, I love BF for different reasons entirely).
I want at least another GOOD option outside of just "older CODs".
I'm playing Slipgate, ffs. I need more games like this, not less

Point is that XDefiant was made to sell cosmetics ranging from serious one to total bonkers sh*t. Hell look what they did to Siege recently.

I would argue that making a game like XDefiant, which likely becomes a disappointment, makes the publishers shun the development of games like these in the future, for the wrong reasons.

The reason why there are zero viable COD alternatives is that COD is so successful at what it does. If you want something like that, it is hard to not buy the latest COD game every year.

Rest of the players are sucked in by Warzone, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Counter-Strike, Valorant, or Overwatch.

Not many players left to play other more inventive arena shooters.

Games like Quake Champions, the latest Unreal Tournament, Lawbreakers, and Diabotical deserved more players, but the competition is too tough.

Halo Infinite seems to be only game which can be a successful arena shooter. It has a big budget, and the developers who believe in the old formula.

Arena shooter is a bad definition. I usually use that with games like Quake and Unreal Tournament.

Yeah, this is insane.
Microprose is either developing or publishing all the games which I actually want to play. They will most likely be D0 or D1 purchases for me, starting with HighFleet which is releasing tomorrow.

Wow I haven't seen that before, that looks pretty sick! Very promising, hope they get enough funding to have a console release not too far down the line.

It was actually curious to play a multiplayer FPS game with actual suspense and being afraid of being shot from somewhere (a single hit kills you most of the time). The lack of UI guidance and reliance on local voicecoms/radio leads to some hilarious and cool moments.

Really reminded me of the first Rainbow Six games.

I don't care about Tom Clancy's legacy or his books. Frankly, I don't think he cared about the video games when he cashed in with his name.

But the original Tom Clancy games were great, and I miss those experiences.

Did anyone else play Ghost Recon Phantoms? It was a free to play GR team-based shooter that took a lot of ideas from Future Soldier's multiplayer (which is secretly one of the best MP shooters of that generation of consoles) and was actually pretty damn fun despite some mid-2010's annoying F2P conventions like having to pay real money for grenades or wait a long ass time for them to resupply, though I may be misremembering that.

It also flopped and was eventually cancelled.

What I would give to have something like Future Soldier's multiplayer gameplay back. Though I admittedly played very little of Wildland's pvp mode.

It's true that a lot of talented people are working on it though? And shitting all over it before literally anyone has tried it isn't cool.

If you are writer, film maker, chef, or game developer this is part of the job. I think negative feedback is often more useful, like it clearly improved Halo Infinite, and probably gave the developers more time.

This game would be perfectly fine as a stand-alone product, although it might get lost in midst of competition. But if you are going to associate your product with any famous gaming franchise that has a dedicated following, a negative backlash should not be a surprise to anyone.

Same applies to that new Rainbow Six game. Ubisoft could have avoided the negative comments by making it a new franchise. Then the game would be judged on its merits alone.

You seemed to ignore the "before literally anyone has tried it" part. What you're saying is absolutely true, but if you're a chef you won't get slagged off for your menu photographs, but the plate you serve someone.

But I can also say that Clownado is a bad film on the basis of the name alone.

For XDefiant I had five minutes of gameplay footage, and unless they are hiding something, I did not see a single original idea or an interesting take on something old.

That's what happens when your artists all have very similar backgrounds lol. I believe many at Treyarch are big on the Punk theme so that's why you see it so much in Cold War.

There's been plenty of AA CoD alternatives over the years. Breach, Blacklight, Warface, Iron sight, etc. The one AAA effort was the Medal of Honor reboot that failed.

The thing is, not many publishers have a CoD equivalent franchise in their library. Microsoft, Sony, Capcom, Square Enix, none of them have a prominent military shooter series that could compete. Ubisoft with the Tom Clancy license was realistically the only one.

Yes, I know there's been many, that's why I emphasised GOOD. Those were not good, in my opionion/taste.
Medal of Honor (reboot) was "fine" but played more like CQB Battlefield, and that was a while ago, too.
Blacklight was fine for the time, but it had little competition when that console gen began, which is why I even gave it a second look.
The best ones were Titanfall 1 / 2 but I don't care for the mech stuff (i just leave them on guard/follow).

To be honest I hate the tone, setting and 'tude of XDefiant but will gladly endure all of it plays the way I'm beginning to expect it might.

I literally miss good 6v6 games, specially when CoD changed its focus to Warzone. So it seems like a great welcome, there is simply not good CoD similar games on market nowadays, it's either Battle Royale or CS-like. I agree with the bad usage of Tom Clancy's name, but the game does not look like shit as people are saying. I really believe it's got a potential since CoD traditional MP is not the focus for Activision now (and has a paywall barrier and also a new 60 bucks title is released every year), and most of the chinese or western f2p shooters in the style of gameplay are dead.

Yeah exactly, this is basically my thing about this as well.
COD needs a regular f2p multiplayer option outside of Warzone, kind of like what XDefiant is doing.
Also COD Mobile doesn't count. But if that was on console/PC with some tweaks I'd be all over that probably.
Basically I want this to be good, I'm starved for this sort of game.
