Is any other game in the series as much of a tense and emotional rollercoaster ride as 0?
They all have their moments, the biggest and most emotionally affecting imo being in 2, 3, and 6. There's a lot that happens that you won't anticipate. Is any other game in the series as much of a tense and emotional rollercoaster ride as 0?
This is a common mistake. You get what you pay for man ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
100% yes
Kiwami was a very budget "game". It was something they did between 0 and 6 because they figured out very early on that the dragon engine was going to prolong development by a looooong time. They did it as a quick and easy stopgap and thus just imported 95% of the game straight from 0 and made the rest of the game a literal shot for shot remake of the PS2 entry...for better or worse. Most of the title's issues ultimately stem from this. It just is what it is, and most wouldn't really disagree with you if you said it was the worst game in the series other than the game it was a remake of.

Good thing of the remaster is I found both coin locker keys from this distance

Looks are worse but that's expected since this is an upres port of an early PS3 game with minimal improvements while 0 and Kiwami are late game PS3 releases that were developed on the PS4 in parallel so they look much better in several places. That said, it stills looks nice thanks to the improved textures, and Okinawa especially looks pretty darn nice even as is.How does it look/perform/play compared to Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1?
What I ended up doing is keeping an eye on the stomach meter and making sure to eat Onomichi Pudding or the same restaurant foods rich in green XP. Boring, but more tolerable if you do this between other activities. Sadly, if you've already done most everything else, all that's left is the grind.Trying to platinum Y6 and the green exp for the natural 300 is screwing with me. I miss like over 8/10k in green exp and the only big time green exp giver is substories which right now i only got Amon left. And doing food and activities for it gets boring fast. Also grinding clan missions is no fun at all.
That combat looks like a lot of fun!

I just finished Yakuza 0.
Important question though:Did Makoto get the 100 billion yen now or...?
I'm on the final chapter of Yakuza 0. I'm stalling for time because I just do not want this game to end. I decided to give pocket racing another try. And I'm also trying to finish up the Media King area.
Since I have Kiwami waiting to play right after this I'm wondering, how well does Kiwami tie into the events of 0?
Kiwami isn't a straight up sequel to 0. It ties the two together nice if you do side content, but its still mainly the same story made 10 years before 0 was even made. Just with some extra cutscenes that greatly flesh out one character so his motivations are clearer (which in turn makes the story so much better). Gameplay wise, yeah its way closer to 0 now since it pulls so much from 0. Not a bad thing since 0 in many ways is still the best Yakuza game.
I resorted to spamming Golden Gun + Dragon Style Sumo Slap. It sour me for the next fight.Holy fucking shit.
Jingu just killed me with a sliver of health left. I swear no matter how much I kept hitting him he wouldn't.fucking.die.
I've been playing videogames for over 30 years, and I don't think I've ever encountered a more frustratingly shitty, poorly designed encounter. It's literally mash X to get up, the game. Oh, you got shot. Look at this excrushingly slow animation of your character falling to the ground while they keep shooting at you and also, here's a grenade on top of that. Oh, he's healing. Time to pop a Tauriner to get Heat and stop him from healing. Oh wait, I got shot by two dudes (who revive if you kill them) at the same time. Sometimes Jingu's animation is so janky, and so disconnected from what he's actually doing (like the direction he throws the grenades when he's running away) that it looks like a FIFA glitch.
It's absolute trash. I can't wait to finish this game and uninstall it forever and never ever play it again.
I'm mostly venting here, guys. Sorry. It's therapeutic.

Anyway, more time done on Yakuza 3. More side stories unlocked so been focusing on those. While they aren't quite as lengthy as newer games, many of them make me laugh quite a bitdelivering the ice cream, the dude always trying to jump off the bridge, some of the legends of Okinawa quests, Tuna Fund, perfect cup ramen etc. Then you got the Akimoto stuff, teaching your dog tricks, hind and seek with the orphans... Its between 2 and here where they really start improving the side stories in the main series
Also, managed to conquer the seas and catch my first Tuna. That was a heck of a battle, took a good few minutes to reel it in.
Also Sega put out a new combat focused trailer for Fist of the North Star
Ok guys, Kiwami is in the books. Managed to finish it after a marathon session and some whiskey. Took me three tries to killand the rest of the game went down smoothly.Jingu
I want to write my opinion on this game because I don't remember the last time I was so conflicted and had such mixed feelings about a game, but suffice it to say that I enjoyed it more than I disliked it, if that's worth something. So here it goes. I'll spoiler tag it because I don't want to clog up the thread with a wall of text :
I think the combat system in this game is absolutely wonderful. It's deep, responsive, varied, challenging and immensely satisfying. In fact it forced me to print out a list with all the combos and moved since there are so many grabs, counters, and dodges, some of which require heat, some of which require Climax Heat, that I couldn't keep track of everything. And I loved that. Almost like a fighting game in that way.
It's a testament to the combat mechanics that even after hundreds of random goon encounters I was still not bored with fighting them.
Which brings me to the biggest issue, which is the bosses. I've written a ton about them in this thread so I won't say much but I thought they were very poorly designed and didn't allow me to apply what I acquired and learned through the game. I must mention that after getting the hang of the combat and the kiwami finishers and the counters I didn't die a single time in the game until I reached the THAT boss, so in general I didn't find the game all that difficult (I played it on hard) , just frustrating and tiring (when it comes to the bosses).
The other worst part of the game were guns / knives. They completely change the flow of the game and it really makes it feel like the game is actively cheating against you. Getting staggered and having to mash x to get up after getting knocked down in one hit is annoying and destroys the flow of combat and we all know how bad it feels to lose control of your character in a game. It's a very poor way of making the game difficult (and it doesn't make it all that difficult, just annoying). Some bosses are so cheap that they almost seem to have been made annoying in bad faith. I guess it's the resulting of bolting the combat of a much more modern and better designed game (0) onto an archaic PS2 Era game. It's a jarring dissonance.
It's interesting that I had the most fun when fighting hordes of enemies, because then you can use all the tools at your disposal and really flex your muscles. Run around weaving in rush mode to build heat, land some satisfying combos in brawler and finish them of with Beast by slamming them against one another.
Majima was also fun to fight against, probably because I fought him so many times. The mad dog style is the worst but the other ones were bearable and even enjoyable.
Curiously the majority of my deaths occurred during the Car Chase sequence, which I thought was the hardest part of the game, but I actually enjoyed getting better at it since the challenge actually felt fair for a change. And clearing that part was the most rewarding as well.
Overall I'd give the game a 6/10, which would be higher if it were not for a couple of truly horrifically bad bosses. But I liked the game well enough and tonight I will be starting Yakuza 0, which I hope retains the best parts of Kiwami without being hampered by its worst parts.
TLDR: Combat rocks, Kamurocho rocks, bosses can all die in a fire, I'll be starting 0 tonight.
So if the combat is my least favorite part of Yakuza games, and I also really disliked God Hand, I should probably skip this, right?
Oh yeah I just remembered they had said they were making "moral" changes to Yakuza 3, I recall people took this to mean the trans substory or other dated content might be changed.
Has anyone heard anything about this since?
Here's the specific quote from a GNN Gamer interview
"However, 'Yakuza 3' was a work that was launched in 2009. Some of the content was OK at the time when taken from a certain point of view, but that content may not be very good with today's view on what's moral and ethical. You know, Japan's general social atmosphere has also changed a lot in recent years, so there have been very slight changes in the game's [depiction] of performances to match the change in today's current moral values and judgement standards."
Yeah, the Michuru (trans girl) side stories seem to be cut going by everything I've heard so far. I guess they couldn't find a decent way to do those side stories (they are pretty dated and would probably be torn apart if they were still included, especially over here). Bar AxA that's the only thing I've heard is missing. The rest has been all present and correct, and its been great fun replaying the game.
