4 for each character. 3 that are unlocked normally through the game, and 1 for each character that are hidden behind a certain side activity for each character (that are totally worth unlocking).

Play Yakuza 0 first, then play Kiwami.I see.
I just started Yakuza 0; my introduction to the series. I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm wondering about how I should approach the rest of the series. I have Kiwami, but where should I go from there? Would it be bad to jump straight to 6?
Fantastic news :) One non Ishin/Kenzan question I'd love answered if you get the chance, is how on earth do all the characters manage to remove their shirts/jackets/ties in one go? Always cracks me up when they do that,I'm very happy to announce that I'll be interviewing both Daisuke Sato AND Takaya Kuroda in a couple of weeks at Japan Expo in Paris. I'll only have 20 minutes but I'll try to make the best of the opportunity.
That's actually pretty funny, I'll try to remember to ask that!Fantastic news :) One non Ishin/Kenzan question I'd love answered if you get the chance, is how on earth do all the characters manage to remove their shirts/jackets/ties in one go? Always cracks me up when they do that,
That's awesome. Ask him about a Kazama prequel or Majima standalone game, just to remind him there's demand.I'm very happy to announce that I'll be interviewing both Daisuke Sato AND Takaya Kuroda in a couple of weeks at Japan Expo in Paris. oof, I surprisingly found Ishin at a small local used game store. I dont speak a word of japanese, but started it up to try and muddle thru and use khhsubs where available. So far it's mostly just been a real bummer it's never getting localized -- there's nothing here that doesn't seem like it will play to an american crowd just fine, and the production quality/budget(/scale?) seem right in line with 0 and 6. Glad I get to play it in some limited form, but really disappointed I won't ever get to really appreciate it.
especially considering the fist of the north star game is getting localized, which I get is an anime property and has some more western fans, but seems to be missing a lot of the heart and charm I come to yakuza games for.
I'd love to play as Nishiki in Y0. Totally missed opportunity imo. Majima is cool and all but his fighting styles are not up my alley.
I'd also like for Tanimura to return, his fighting style was the best in Y4. He must've be really disliked character that he never returned after 4. Shrug.
If he is in Y6 - don't tell me. I didn't play it yet.
Tanimura's VA was caught in a drugs scandal and ended up retiring from acting altogether. I wouldn't get your hopes up on him ever returning.
Gotta remember the series was pretty much dead when Ishin was released. I don't think we got Yakuza 5 announced until the end of that year (2014) and it was a year before that was released. So Sega officially didn't care at that point :( While now the series is doing well enough to justify localising more of them which is great news. Who knows, now that they basically are all caught up on the series, maybe they'll go back and localise it? (that seems like a slim bet, but who knows!)
Have they imagined a JoJo ga Gotoku? :3I'm very happy to announce that I'll be interviewing both Daisuke Sato AND Takaya Kuroda in a couple of weeks at Japan Expo in Paris. I'll only have 20 minutes but I'll try to make the best of the opportunity.
I just completed Yakuza 0, my first game in the franchise, and it totally exceeded my expectations. I loved the club mini-game and I almost felt like Majima was the true protagonist of the game with a more compelling story. It's a shame that we probably won't play as him in future remakes. I'm going to get Kiwami soon but I gotta take a break before I jump in, I suppose. I hope to find a side activity in it as captivating as the club mini-game from 0.
Aside from that, I just really liked the emphasis on characterization and long cut-scenes and I hope to see more of that with Kiwami. It was so refreshing to have that in a game, the story was the main hook for me which kept me invested throughout the experience.
There should be translated skill trees out there, alternatively using a translation app on your phone/tablet does wonders to help explain the moves your unlocking. Not the most user friendly way through the game, but it helped me in a pinch.I'd kill for a localized Ishin. I tried to play it with the big English guide but it was just way too complicated to actually get through that way.
Spending half an hour staring at a skill tree trying to figure out what I'm actually putting points in to was kind of the death of that game to me.
Temper your expectations with Kiwami. I love that game, but Kiwami is a remake (shot for shot story wise) of the first game - cutscenes are much shorter for the most part apart from a couple of story exposition ones. It still features some excellent characters though, and it does add a number of newer cutscenes in the beginning of the first few chapters to help explain the story a bit better (these cutscenes are really good, easily the best part of the remake for me, with the combat improvements not too far behind).

Oh yeah, if you liked 0 you should like Kiwami as well. I just see a few people post how they were a bit less impressed with Kiwami over 0 in some respects. Myself, I love Kiwami because back before it was announced the one thing I wanted more than anything was Yakuza 1 with better combat, and that's exactly what I got! Its also got more aggressive enemies which for me I was super happy with as the difficulty was more to my tastes (but still a bit too easy on Hard mode). Its worth taking your time on the series if you can though, mainly just because each game is pretty long depending on how much side content you do (usually takes me around 100 hours give or take (less on Kiwami and 3, since they have less content compared to other games in the series). Plus the emotional pay off from doing the games in story order is greater with 6.Thanks for the heads up, I think I would still enjoy my time with the game considering it plays and feels just like 0. I already can't wait to see what 6 is all about, but a part of me wants to go through the rest of the games first. I have no idea how long that could take lol.
Not wanting to spoil myself on anything but what's the deal with Majima? Playing as him in Zero is amazing, but then I saw bits of a cutscene with him in Kiwami and it looks like he went batshit insane? It's like, a big switch in his behavior from the more composed character I'm currently playing as...
Also keep in mind that Majima started as a joke character who the only thing it had was being crazy, it was only until much later in the series that he started to get development and characterization. Thats why there is a big switch in behavior from Y0 to Y1, the end of Y0 did a poor job trying to explain it.
Not sure exactly on what you mean (I might be misunderstanding) but Yakuza has always had some draw distance issues where stuff will appear as you walk closer to them. But I've never seen issues with Textures themselves fail to load (I've seen this happen sometimes on RE7 on my PS4, but that's the only example of that I can think of). 0 and Kiwami were fine for me on my PS4 Pro, even better when I enabled Boost mode to get rid of the minor screen tearing both games had in a couple of spots.
yep. You aren't the only one who was confused by this. It was a dumb design decision.
The Dragon style being rubbish I felt was explained clearly in the game by Majima. As you say, just encounter him in various places and you'll eventually be hilariously overpowered, tiger dropping enemies in a single hit.
As for the enemies healing. Yeah, that goes down as the stupidest thing in the game. Looking back on the old Gaf thread for the game I'm sure 90% of my posts related to it in some way. Thankfully they got the hint that it sucked and never included it in the series again (though hilariously one of Kiryu's heat actions is reused in FOTNS since Kiryu basically stole the move from Kenshiro anyway, its a perfect fit).
Yeah Yakuza 0 has been more fun then Yakuza Kiwami in that regard. havent seen any bosses heal out of the blue.
Can you promise me I'll never see a boss self heal again? Cause I already beat Kiwami. I am working on zero. Then next I go to Kiwami 2 then Yakuza 6
shadowman16
I know, it just feels sloppy as well. I guess it becomes more refined and faster with the upgrades. Looking forward to tiger bombing everyone.
Biggest problem for a newcomer going 1-5, then 0, then 6 is, in my opinion:Lots of 0 are references to later games. From more important ones (that you've picked up) and a few more you've not picked up on yet that won't make sense until you play Yakuza 5. Its the one argument I have that 0 should be played after 1-5 - in that the game has tons of references to the previous games you'll only get having played all the previous games. Its just that it makes a fantastic beginning point to the series as well.

Excellent!!Yeah, you should be fine. I can;t recall any other bosses able to heal in any other games in the series. It was just something brought into Kiwami. Kiwami 2 actually goes far too the other way, using heat moves in that game deals way to much damage, makes things a bit too easy in my opinion! FOTNS seems to balance things better in terms of difficulty + damage output without resorting to healing.

hen 0, then 6 is, in my opinion:
You finish 5, and start 0. This is great, because you get to see where Kiryu got his start, before you play his final game. Not to mention you're hoping he recovers well from his injuries in 5's ending throughout all of this. Fine.
The problem emerges in Majima. You do 5, and he's important in the story, but absent for most of it, only showing up as a final boss that got played by the main villain. Then you do 0, and Majima is a God damned hero, steals the show, and he's the best character ever, right? Also, it cements just how much he cares about Saejima.
Ok, so now you start 6, expecting a great story progression for these characters, and... Majima and Saejima get shoved off to the side, not being relevant in any way whatsoever. If you just played 0, this has got to be super jarring and disappointing.
I think it's easier to do 0-3, and then accept that Majima fades a bit as a character in the latter half of the series. Otherwise, I feel like you'd get some sort of whiplash from the changes in his level of story presence.
The fortune teller part is amazing because of that, it has references for all of the main games in the franchise. Also both Majima/Kiryu bumping into that "blonde kid" is just great.
Kiwami did some great references as welli got a chuckle when Kiryu implied that Date could be a journalist and then Date said that would be the equivalent of Kiryu becoming a taxi driver
To be honest, the handling of Majima is weird regardless of where you start, but I guess yeah, it's a bit more disappointing in order (still hoping they make up their mind here).Biggest problem for a newcomer going 1-5, then 0, then 6 is, in my opinion:
