It looks neat but yeah the effect is caught between going for an effect and the fact that they'd have to remodel most of the game to complete it. Maybe just redoing Yooka and Laylee would be enough.

It's fine as a fun little addon but it honestly still just looks like one of those faux-retro games that try to simulate the look of the old era of games but don't quite have the budget to actually pull it off. But I think that's as good as we're going to get honestly, to make it fully authentic they'd have to more or less re-model the entire game which is...a lot to ask for a small thing like this.

Also on the side, anyone know which game this is from? Kinda remember playing something looking like it as a kid.

How is it trolling? What you said is PATENTLY untrue. Only someone that did not experience both consoles back in those days would say something that is the compete opposite of reality. The N64 is KNOWN for the hardware-based blur filter it used in virtually every game.

Here are some direct-feed comparison pictures taken from real hardware, using RGB.

So will this improve performance at least? I have the switch version but the casino level has this weird hitching going that made me stop playing.

Mystical ninja starring Goemon if I'm not mistaken.

Looks much more convincing then the first try, the scanlines might be a little too much, but it comes pretty close all things considered

I actually like it more than the regular art style, it makes it feel less cluttered and noisy. That being said it is not a "64 bit" feeling in the slightest.

The characters don't have ANY shading on them now - they're just flat colours.

And while SOME N64 games had a very blurry look, they were only cheapo third-party games. Nintendo's, Rareware's, Ubisoft's, etc. titles looked quite clear.
Naa, they were blurry back in the day too. Still remember being disappointment by the amount of blur. Then suddenly an emulator was released on the PC. Amazingly it let me play SMK, Zelda and Mario 64 without the blur. Though many games didn't work on the emu and still had to be played on the CRT telly.

Still got that N64. Telly, not so much, so I can't confirm, but I do remember first party titles like Mario 64 being blurry. That was not the case with PS1 games.

It's... something...

Hopefully Playtonic is already at work on their next game. I hope it's either a sequel to Yooka-Laylee or another 3D platformer of some kind. YK might not have been very good, but I appreciate what they were trying to accomplish and I still had some fun regardless.
