My dream Starfox game is for it to be a Mass Effect, RPG, shooter action game. Like there would be a hub and you can choose various types missions like flying your arwing, going on foot or getting in a land master. You can do missions to get money to buy upgrades and equipment to retool your moveset or vehicles. There would be a branching narrative that would take place over the Lylat system and there would be dialogue options which can get you into different events or scenarios depending on what you choose.

I dunno, Starfox needs a massive change to be relevant again kind of like Kid Icarus Uprising.
Watch Nintendo dropping the bomb that Retro had been working exactly on this and that's why they were busy for Metroid Prime 4 when it started development. One can wish, right?

Frankly I don't think Nintendo is interested in internally developing story-focused games (which anything like Mass Effect would be). Monolithsoft's work is the only thing that is really exploring that sort of thing.

Clearly you haven't experienced the emotional highs and lows of the beautiful tapestry that is Ring Fit Adventure's story.

But seriously they could also do something somewhat similar to Mass Effect in gameplay more so than story. Actually a formula like Kid Icarus Uprising with a more sci-fi setting and ship/gun upgrades instead of Pit's gear could be sorta similar.

SamSho could be our February game. I know they said Q1, but I hope SNK is not stupid enough to release it too close to ACNH.

It's coming out on February 25th.

February is really packed with 3rd party releases. So far we have:
Samurai Shodown
Darksiders Genesis
Snack World
Hatsune Miku
Devil May Cry 3
Megaman Zero Collection
Two Point Hospital (I think this will be the star of the month)
Railway Empire

I really hope this Super Metroid talk is false. It's easily my favorite of the 2D Metroids, and it's pretty much objectively flawless. And I really don't want to see Super's timeless 2D graphics to be redone into Samus Returns style trash-fire 2.5D graphics. Metroid II getting a remake made sense because the original was antiquated in pretty much every way, but Super Metroid (and ZM and Fusion) are just as good today as they were upon release. I wouldn't want a remake of any of them.

Give me Metroid 5 or give me death!

Absolutely, I think 2020 will be just as good as 2017 and 2019.

In 2017, I said Switch will go down as the greatest software library that Nintendo ever had. And I've stuck to that belief every year. I don't say it to be a delusional Nintendo fangirl. I genuinely believe that -- in the very end -- Switch's software library will wipe the floor with SNES, GameCube, DS, 3DS. And it won't even be close. Not even close at all.

There's still a ton of unannounced games. Switch owners will continue to be bombarded with software (first party, third party, indie).
Yikes. I don't want to be drowned with even more games in my backlog :P

I think Switch will be my favourite system once it gets GBA games. That's because a lot of my faves are on that system, including Nintendo series that are currently dead.

Mass Effect's gameplay isn't anything special. That game is entirely popular/well-received for its story/writing/branching dialogue paths/character choices. None of those things feel like they would fit well with Star Fox.

I don't think "Breath of the Wild Star Fox" is exactly the right thing to want for this franchise, but it's certainly closer/more appropriate than "Mass Effect Star Fox".

2. Um...hmm.... oh yes, Super Mario Maker, I guess I played that a little bit!

....And that's it, cause Fire Emblem: Three Houses took over all my gaming time this year. Fuck.

If we don't see Bayonetta 3 by the next Direct I'm going to assume development hell regardless of what Platinum says. There's no reason they can't provide some type of substantive update after 2 years of dead silence.

Starfox needs to steal the good parts of Starlink(open world, planet hopping, space travel), but make it not boring. Have unique fun missions, classic on rail segments, great boss fights. Imo that would be something special.

I won't touch another remake of a remake of a remake. I also think an hour long on rails only game (even with different paths and high replay value) is a hard sell nowadays. They need to be more ambitious.

2.5 years then it has to be very close, monolithsoft development times are usually around 3 years, I'm surprised we haven't seen a trailer

Hard to say when they will be ready to show it. The recruitment message made it sound like it is a very ambitious project, so it could take longer than usual.

Also, please keep in mind that this project isn't being developed by the same core group responsible for the Xenoblade games. Takahashi is managing the Xenoblade group with a new RPG in the vein of previous Xenoblade games. If I had to guess the director/producer of the new IP, it's either going to be Yasuyuki Honne (Baten Kaitos series) or Tadashi Nomura. Or maybe both are involved, idk.

Honne apparently now works in Tokyo on a much more regular basis. He is (possibly used to be) the head of the Kyoto studio, which is mainly an art studio used for assisting Nintendo and MS on art assets. Honne has expressed an interest in making a new game of his own, so maybe this is his opportunity? On top of that, the fantasy artwork (one of them or both, can't recall atm) was made by him.

On the other hand, Nomura is now the head of the newly formed Osaki studio location in Tokyo. In a recent interview (I believe from July 2019), Sugiura (MS head executive) and Nomura said their first goal is to make their current project successful. Nomura hasn't been credited for a major role since Xenoblade Chronicles X. Since then, he's had minor roles in BotW and Project X Zone 2.

I see no reason a studio like Monolithsoft can't have two announced projects at once. The fact is XB: DE, the new IP, and XB3 are all likely coming in the next couple of years. So there's going to be some sort of promotional overlap on at least two of those. (Not to mention they are also a major part of BOTW 2 and that will certainly get more promotion in the coming months).

Nobody is talking about out of studio projects with Monolith then you might as well say they're working on Animal Crossing New Horizons. Wow they could have 4 games next year...

Okay, sure.

It's kind of irrelevant to the point though -- there's no reason Monolithsoft can't have multiple projects announced and promoted at once. It happens all the time with many other studios.

It's definitely my personal GOTY. I'll admit that I haven't played most of The Game Awards nominees but I'll be very surprised if upon remedying that any of them grab me on the same level. Three Houses' characters are just so good.

I'm going to stay pessimistic about Monolith and assume their only other project is the next Xenoblade(and Zelda, etc.)

1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
2. Luigi's Mansion 3
3. Pokémon Sword & Shield

Haven't had the time to give Link's Awakening a go yet since I gotta beat Bayonetta a second time but it's next on my list!

Nintendo would probably have more Mass Effect-like games if they allocated more resources into cultivating and supporting Western studios where these types of games are more the norm. They'd have more games in general that fit Western design and directorial sensibilities, much in the same way that supporting Rare expanded their portfolio to include games that Nintendo themselves were not making, and how Retro were able to give a life to the Metroid series through Prime that was stylistically and conceptually exceptionally Western.

You'll still get big story games from Nintendo, but probably more akin to what we see from Japanese role playing studios, like Monolith. I don't think internally Nintendo is overly interested in producing these sorts of games with EAD and whatnot. It's not really their skillset. Their collab with Platinum is probably the only other outlier.

I agree Monlithsoft can turn out new games at what seems to be a faster clip than most studios. But their past few games have kind of come from the same IP. I believe with new IPs it typically takes a lot longer to make a new game. So I'm expecting this game to take 4+ years. So I'm not expecting Monolithsofts new IP until 2021 at least.

If an internal team at Nintendo wanted to include a big epic story in their game, they're probably allowed to do it so long as the gameplay is nailed first.

I want a new IP from Monolith so bad.
I respect Xenoblade series, but don't like it at all.
Not my type of game for sure.

I'm really excited for what they've been cooking.

I'm getting in the mindset to be ready for super remake over metroid 5 at this point, so I'm trying to take away positives. They could really amp up the boss fights. They can fix maridia. No glitchy effect when getting hit.

Yeah, I seriously doubt that Metroid will get "plenty of love" on the Switch. At most, I think we will get Metroid Prime Trilogy and maybe a 2D Metroid Remake (which I would be very happy with to be honest). I don't think Metroid Prime 4 will release on the Switch, maybe on Switch 2 in 3-4 years time.

It looks like it'll be an Action rpg. My hope is it will have a broader appeal. Simpler combat is one of them. I want this new IP to really put Monolith in the upper echelon of developers

I'm generally fairly cool with it because we're still getting the Xenoblades and the Octopaths/Bravelys (Bravelies?) and such... but you just had to say Mass Effect, EC! Now I'm at least 10% less cool with it because that is an amazing thought. <_<

Even in that scenario, that is still "plenty of love" compared to every other Nintendo system since the Gamecube & GBA, which either got one or no mainline Metroid games. And the thing is, Metroid Prime 4 very much -is- going to release on Switch as well, even if it's towards the end of the system's life.

Favourite releases this year?

1. Fire Emblem Three Houses
2. Luigi's Mansion 3
3. Link's Awakening
4. Pokémon Sword
5. Untitled Goose Game
6. Astral Chain
7. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
8. Tales of Vesperia
9. Travis Strikes Again

Final Fantasy XII and Wolfenstein Youngblood I still need to complete or play.

Btw I appreciate that Emily gave us a little assurance. From the Nintendo side I'm not too worried about whats coming, Nintendo has been lit for the past couple of years.

On the third party side of things it will be interesting. While several games are releasing on PS4 or Xbox One (the likes of Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VII, Avengers, Watch_Dogs Legion etc.) and third parties are fully developing PS5 and Xbox X games, which they will heavily push, but with the 2020 release being late I imagine they want to secure a different revenue stream.

I'm not expecting any miracles mind you. EA for example will not even care about the system and publishers like Ubisoft will continue to dripfeed releases, but with Switch being the most healty platform in 2020 I can't help but think that publishing a game or two more would help.

Although I'm pretty happy we'll get stuff like Deadly Premonition 2, No More Heroes III, Bravely Default II, Panzer Dragoon; this helps the system too. Hopefully we'll get more. (Like the reveal of SMT V)

I still maintain that a new Star Fox should have some extra effort put into a multiplayer mode but Ace Combat 7 already showed how to make a great dogfighting game earlier this year. Star Fox x Mass Effect sounds like another misguided effort to fit a square peg into a round hole like Adventures.

While Nintendo is a very different company than back then and they're a lot more conservative with Directs now, they did have a Direct a week before Christmas in 2013, and it ended up being one of the absolute greatest Directs of all time, so hey, very unlikely but not impossible.

Shit, every Direct in 2013 was amazing, now that I think about it.
