I was looking for the last Animal Crossing Direct they made for New Leaf "Welcome Amiibo", and man, that was something...
I mean, why open pre-orders for a game you'll never release anyways as you're about to leave the gaming industry?
I think it's because the Nintendo Dreams magazine that just came out didn't actually have anything new other than new renders of some villagers (unless I missed some actual new info). The next magazine to have info will be CoroCoro on Feb 15, and they apparently are going to have an "exclusive scoop" on the game. I imagine we will have seen a Direct of some kind by that point.

Didn't know this. Well at this point, even though i don't like this scenario, a Direct on Feb 13th seems very likely :\
Yeah I'm thinking that will be the case. A general Direct on the 6th, then an Animal Crossing Direct on the 13th. It would fit the pattern of things like New Leaf, MM2, and others having game-specific directs around a month before launch. They could do one on the 20th and have it be exactly a month before launch, but since we know that exclusive scoop is coming from CoroCoro on the 15th, I really think the AC direct will happen before that.
I think I'm a feeew posts behind, but close enough to pass as Dark Cloud.
The past two years had successful JRPG summer launches on Switch with Octopath Traveler and Three Houses. I wonder if SMT 5 might be able to launch in that summer window this year.

There were lot of surprise announcements for Nintendo games this gen :
- The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild : Voice acting, multiple towns, etc.
- Super Mario Odyssey : the capture mechanics were kept secret until E3 2017
- Fire Emblem Three Houses : timeskip was a huge surprise (announced in the second or third trailer of the game I believe)
- Splatoon 2 : Salmon Run was announced in the second trailer of the game (at the end of ARMS Direct)
I just hope they surprise us with something we were not expecting!

Trends and patterns are good to follow in life as long as you understand they're not always going to hold up. I do believe the "not doing a general direct in the second half of a month since 2013!" is a good pattern to go off of. That's 6 straight years of Nintendo doing general directs in the first half of a month. That's a pretty big sample size.
There's a chance the direct will be in march so you will have lots of people concern trolling that the direct is delayed and that Nintendo has nothing to show, and so the cycle continues.
I sincerely hope there is some kind of activity like mini games for online multiplayer. I mean: you can play with people on your island, and what are you supposed to do together?
How about some realism. For example, the smoke stack of houses only smoking when there's a oven in the house and it's on. That would be a good start.

It's fine. Animal Crossing will be releasing in that month and I have 18 days off work to sink my life into it.
I want a weekend Direct at the end of a month so that we can throw all "rules" and formulas out the window.
Personally, I think that we'll be able to sail to one or more other islands, all with their own unique features (like towns?).
Sure, it's very useful to follow the trends and patterns, especially the long running ones like you said. But people acting like these are concrete hard and fast rules are jumping the gun a bit.
